Vitamin D is in the news almost every day. Now researchers from Saint Louis University have discovered a molecular pathway that contributes to triple-negative breast cancer which is a often deadly and resistant to treatment form of cancer that strikes younger women.

The study was published in the Journal of Cell Biology. Scientists identified vitamin D and some protease inhibitors as possible new therapies. And the team also discovered a set if 3 biomarkers that could help to identify people who could benefit from the treatment.

Vitamin D alters gene expression which has been identified as the primary pathway that allows tumor cells to grow unchecked. Vitamin D has a role in turning off this pathway, providing a safe effective way to fight these type of tumors.

And research over the years has shown that lower levels of Vitamin D greatly increase the risk of many forms of cancer. This important study is among the first to identify Vitamin D as a key to prevention.

It's recommended to obtain optimum Vitamin D blood levels within the range of 50 and 70ng/mL and higher for those fighting the disease.

Even if breast cancer isn’t an immediate concern, a growing number of experts recommend that every healthy, non-pregnant woman over the age of 30 take I3C supplements for the best possible protection against the disease.

Good advice, particularly since the supplements carry no risk, there is no downside and the cost is minimal. Just don’t substitute the supplements for fresh broccoli since the actual vegetable provides the most potent form of I3C.
