Sean Rooney's insight:

S.R. The Christmas sales may stimulate the Brazilian economy and provide jobs for unemployed citizens.  There are many positive and negative aspects of these impulse purchases.  Will the economy stay strong or continue to be unreliable?  Will this boom in sales result in a higher national debt in the long run?

Sean Rooney's insight:

Armored vehicles are required to maintain order in Brazil.  Many reporters speculate that they are entering the virtually impenetrable.  Will this equipment deter violence in the favelas or continue to increase.  The use of these armored vehicles also points out the high crime in these areas.  Is this the most necessary way to control favelas?

Sean Rooney's insight:

The article elaborates on a specific raid that targets drug gangs in the Rio slums.  This tactic is effective because authorities focus on a specific group in the raid.  Will the crime rate decrease if law enforcement targets drug gangs rather than other gangs?

Sean Rooney's insight:

Authorities declare a favela under control in this article.  Does this mean that we will see progress in the Brazilian economy?  Now that the chaos and violence is contained the federal government needs to address the unemployment rate and provide programs that support these families.  They need to create effective programs for the long term.

Sean Rooney's insight:

Interesting article regarding a drug raid which resulted in the death of a camera man.  Should the media get involved in these raids?
