Reddit: A Beginner's Guide

Reddit: A Beginner's Guide | brave new world | Scoop.it
Spend some quality time with Reddit -- you'll find it an essential resource, a self-correcting marketplace of ideas. Get started with our guide.

To the uninitiated, Reddit looks like a mess — text links, comment threads, points, upvotes, downvotes. At best, posts seem contextless — at worst, totally random.

But spend some quality time with “The Front Page of the Internet,” and you’ll find it’s an essential resource, a self-correcting marketplace of ideas that’s nearly impervious to marketers.

Simply put, Reddit is a message board wherein users submit links. What differentiates it from a real-time information network like Twitter is that the stream of content is curated by the community. Items of value are “upvoted,” and those deemed unworthy are “downvoted.” This determines a post’s position on the site, and items that hit the front page are seen by hundreds of thousands of people (consequently, sending boatloads of traffic to the linked website).

10 Steps to Creating a WordPress Blog

10 Steps to Creating a WordPress Blog | brave new world | Scoop.it

Hey there! My name’s Ryan and I am another new member to the SEER team. I’ve learned so much since starting at SEER but I thought for my first blog post I would cover something I have some background in, WordPress.

I am helping to set up SEER’s upcoming blog on SEO for college students and I thought I would share the checklist I go through every time I start a new site on WordPress. If anyone’s New Years resolution was to finally start blogging then hopefully this post will give you a few ideas and tips or possibly save you a headache down the road.

The great thing about WordPress is that it really does simplify every step of creating and running a site. I was in a meeting with SEER’s developer Chris Le and half the time I thought he was speaking a foreign language when talking about advanced site design. I know some coding basics but thanks to WordPress and the plug-ins and themes created around it I’ve built more than a dozen sites ranging from your basic blog all the way to e-commerce and password protected membership sites.

The State of Social Marketing 2011 – 2012 - Brian Solis | brave new world | Scoop.it

The following report is brought to you by the Pivot Conference taking place in New York on October 15-16, 2012. You can download a full copy of the report for free by clicking here.

At the end of 2011, Social marketing stands at a profound crossroads. Some organizations are finally embracing the importance of social networks and, as a result, increasing investments in creative engagement, marketing, and service programs. Others see the future value, but lag behind in execution. At the vanguard, Social Businesses drive a virtuous cycle of discovery: Their successes in Social marketing lead to new data, which lead to insights, which lead to new and more effective programs as well as the business systems and processes necessary to improve internal and external collaboration...

Top 10 Blogs for Authors

Top 10 Blogs for Authors | brave new world | Scoop.it
Serious writers, who have experienced some level of success, when probed, will reveal that they have done their homework.

They continuously read various magazines and blogs for authors, not just to help them improve their writing, but to ensure that they stay on top of the latest developments and opportunities.

Many of the opportunities that I’ve snagged were discovered only as a result of reading and interacting with others on various blogs. These are opportunities I never would’ve found, otherwise...

Natural Evolution of a Web Community (& how to beat it)

Natural Evolution of a Web Community (& how to beat it) | brave new world | Scoop.it
The typical evolution of a Web community looks and sounds a little something like this:

Stage 1: I love dogs! OMG, do I love dogs! If only there was a Web community to connect with others who love dogs.

Stage 2: Must. Get. Word out about my new dog community. Must host many constructive/ intelligent conversations, unlike those OTHER sites about dogs where users just howl and whine. We will be different. TELL YOUR FRIENDS! Send everyone!
Stage 3: Dude, people are joining! Operation: Let’s Talk About Dogs is becoming a success! I am so smart! Floodgates open!
Stage 4: People really are talking about dogs! They love dogs! They love my site! Community rules!
Stage 5: People are talking about EVERYTHING, not just dogs! YEY! Harmony! Bliss! UNICORN FAIRY!...

Don’t let the Internet win...

Facebook’s Subscribe: The Death of Fan Pages, or is it? | brave new world | Scoop.it

Facebook’s introduction of the “subscription” feature for profile pages has blurred certain lines between profile and fan pages for many individuals seeking to leverage social media to build their own personal brand and on-line presence. This is particularly true for many sales people, agents, etc. who are looking to use Facebook as a way to communicate with customers and prospects.

Facebook fan pages were originally created for brands like Coke or Walmart and expanded out to be used by celebrities, organizations, places, and many others. Many individuals who wanted to interact with fans, prospects, and customers also began to create fan pages since it was an effective way of separating their personal Facebook activity from their business or public Facebook presence. In addition, fan pages provided lower barrier to entry in that it did not require the page to “approve” each follower / fan / friend...

The State And Future Of Social Media Management Solutions

The State And Future Of Social Media Management Solutions | brave new world | Scoop.it

The social media management solutions landscape is vast and fractured. Altimeter Group identifies over 150 social media monitoring solutions and over 30 specifically defined Social Media Management Systems. The vastness of the options makes it hard for brand-side marketers to determine what platforms and tools they should be using.

Exacerbating the problem is that even among the 30 tools Altimeter identifies as Social Media Management Solutions, none of them do the same thing. And there’s no clear definition of what social media management solutions should do. Some of the 30, like WildfireApp, provide a very narrow sliver of functionality (network-specific engagement tools). I wonder if these should even be classified as SMMS at all. But I’ll leave the classification up to other analysts...

5 Simple Steps to Prepare Your Facebook Fan Page for the Unexpected

5 Simple Steps to Prepare Your Facebook Fan Page for the Unexpected | brave new world | Scoop.it

There are a lot of rumors around the “blogo-twitter-sphere” about the changes fan pages may face when Facebook makes updates to the platform, once again. A few weeks ago, when Mark Zuckerberg made his infamous speech about the new changes, we were told “Spotific, frictionless, serendipitous” changes are around the corner.

Users with technical courage followed the hack instructions on Techcrunch and updated their profiles to the new format. The new format for users was said to take about a week until everyone was to be updated, but we are still waiting. Does this mean that fan pages will take longer to update? Or will this change hit out of nowhere, like the last time everyone flipped out about the new fan pages?

Content Curation Tools: 5 Different Approaches

Content Curation Tools: 5 Different Approaches | brave new world | Scoop.it

According to the Romain Goday, there are five distinct approaches to content curation. They are:

1. The Expert Approach: Curators
A way to obtain relevant information with a reduced level of effort is to rely on experts.

2. The Crowd Approach: Popularity
Most content curation tools use a series of algorithms to determine which content is popular and make it more visible to users.

3. The User Behavior Approach: Personalization
Content personalization involves using technology to accommodate the different information needs between individuals. It surfaces content that is assumed to be more relevant for a specific user.

4. The Relationships Approach: Social Graph

The social graph is an increasingly used approach to curate information.

5. The Patterns Approach: Emergence
This approach consists of representing the emergence of content over the Web.

And for each one it provides an in-depth description, pros and cons as well as example of real tools utilizing that approach.

He concludes with a simple but insightful point:

"Most of those approaches are combined by content curation tools in an attempt to increase information relevance for the users.

Tools cannot effectively understand the context of the user.

So the challenge is to reduce the noise without filtering information that could be valuable for the user.

10 Steps to a Successful Social Media Marketing Strategy

10 Steps to a Successful Social Media Marketing Strategy | brave new world | Scoop.it

Creating a social media marketing strategy for a blog or a business can be simple or it can be complex.

A personal blogger isn’t going to perform a SWOT analysis or dive into detailed market research and create piles of spreadsheets and documents so large that you can’t jump over them.

A social media marketing strategy can be three simple steps.

1. See – What is today’s situation
2. Think – Define goals and objectives
3. Draw – Map a route to achieving the goals

Using these elements as a template maybe all you need to to create a social media marketing strategy...
