Why good storytelling helps you design great products

It’s not uncommon for designers to confuse a beautiful looking product with one that works beautifully. A great technique for creating smarter, better products is to approach them using story-centered design.

Andrea Robinson's curator insight, April 17, 2013 11:11 AM

There is truth in that title, "good storytelling helps you design great products" or great anything for that matter. Stories help make the other person on the other end of your marketing or product feel somthing. They feel you get them; they feel your understand them; they feel you know your stuff as an expert or they feel the improvement to their lives using your product.

This concept is not new but is currently being emphasized in blog media because we now our living, designing and storytelling in the digital age. Now, everything we read and the people we interact with are increasingly in large numbers are connections online through blogs and social sites. We are storytelling before we actually meet the people face to face - intentionally or unintentionally we are all creating a storyline.

It only is natural that if you really care about crafting your story well that you will also design a better product that suits the people you are trying to reach through your product design.

This article gives some great example of brands that have managed to make their brands stand out through IMC. I definitely agree that content and communication with consumers, is an essential part of what makes a consumer continue to use a brand this can be seen right through from packaging to the way in which employees engage with customers. How transparent a brand appears to be can also play a factor in whether or not a consumer chooses to stay loyal, a lot of these brands mentioned below have played on this for example Lush which produce organic beauty products, they use a “natural” theme in their packaging which is simple and basic as they as seen as having a “no frills” approach which is all part of communicating their key message of producing organic products.
German Grebenyuk's comment, August 22, 2013 6:50 PM
Yeah, it’s interesting how the article actually draws connections between being attracted to people’s personalities and brands’ personalities. I think it is indeed a lot easier to attract and engage consumers, create a pleasant experience if a brand’s personality reminds them of their friends or partner.
Aleisha Snell's comment, August 23, 2013 12:15 AM
I like how this article shows how different businesses gain emotional responses from their consumers. I agree with Melika and how she mentions that 'like personal relationship consumers are looking for certain characteristics within a brand.' this is a valid point and it shows that the marketers of companies actually need to be in the eyes of their consumers/target group in order to affectively get the positive emotional responses - by receiving a positive response then other marketing techniques will be enforced- for example; word of mouth. Businesses would be better off keeping the existing happy consumers as opposed to trying to pick up new consumers.

Social Media Can Help With Branding, Not Engagement! | Business 2 Community

Social Media Can Help With Branding, Not Engagement! | Business 2 Community | Branding with Storytelling | Scoop.it

Many marketers today are looking to increase their Facebook fans, LinkedIn memberships and/or Twitter followers. Social media marketing is a new buzz-word in both b2b and b2c domains.

But, when it comes to engagement, how easy is it to measure the engagement-level of your Facebook fans or LinkedIn Group Members? How easy is it to interact with them and nurture them? How easy is it to get usage and engagement metrics out of Facebook, LinkedIn et al? Is it even possible? Can you act on the metrics?

External social sites are good for brand-building (or reach) but not for interaction or engagement. A recent Gartner report cited that a mere six percent of marketers claim that marketing on social networking sites is their top priority. What is even more powerful is that 45 percent of those surveyed said corporate websites were key contributors to marketing success. And from the customer perspective, four out of five customers claim to visit a website for product information and only a mere 19 percent would visit a Facebook page, according to Incyte Group....

Hack Your Craft's curator insight, April 17, 2013 2:28 AM

This article really helps explore fan engagement and questions if it can really be nutured within social media. Let us not forget that human social interaction still remains most effective in the real world. Is online social media simple a glorified billboard or TV commercial?

Jeff Domansky's comment, April 17, 2013 1:56 PM
Miz, I agree, without engagement and real interaction with customers, social media is just another form of "old" marketing.
Jeff Domansky's curator insight, April 17, 2013 1:58 PM

Without engagement, social media is just another form of "old" style push marketing. Today's consumers don't respond to the style anymore. And they're definitely open to new sources of content, information, and most important interaction while they research and buy.
