Yes it's back to basics but, if you think you are not making a good impression as you would like, take a good hard look at each of these and ask yourself, which one you should improve on!

The Dawn of Planning and Demise of Advertising

Let us go back to a time before the 70s when the ad agency president was the integral part of the inner circle of the client. he knew more about the clients’ business than even the client himself. It was a time when the client sought the counsel of the ad agency’s president to overcome an issue. This was a time of Y&R, Leo Burnett, NW Ayer, and the likes. The agency knew everything about the clients’ business from share prices to shareholders, from dealer networks, product pipelines to distribution systems. Everything that kept the client up at nights, kept the ad agency awake. This was a time when the ad agency focused purely on the client’s business and nothing else. They were determined on improving the client’s business. However in the 70s the focus suddenly shifted from client’s business to the consumer. Account Planners from London’s successful ad agencies brought in new ideas and set the trend of focusing on the consumer changing the motto of every ad agency “The consumer is the king”. The ad agencies started following the consumer’s every breath and the client business was completely neglected which resulted in the trust bonds between the president and the client being severed and the clients no longer consulted the ad agencies on business matters. The focus on the consumer created the image of ad agencies as the masters of consumers but not of the client’s business. Thus the PR Gurus, the planners, the management Pundits thrived and planning eventually killed the advertising. Experimenting with Extended Storytelling | Geoff Livingston's Blog

Experimenting with Extended Storytelling | Geoff Livingston's Blog | Brand Love | Scoop.it

Many entertainment brands have begun experimenting with transmedia, an academic term for extended storytelling across diverse social and traditional media forms. Since I am publishing a novel this year, I decided to experiment a little with transmedia.

From the extended Star Wars Universe to the X Factor, Hollywood is mixing in extended online media to build comprehensive experiences. Perhaps even more innovative are new projects like the City of Conspiracy in London, which combines rap music, a novel, events, photos and of course, web postings.

Here are some of the ways I am experimenting...

The Blurred Line Between PR and Marketing

The Blurred Line Between PR and Marketing | Brand Love | Scoop.it

The growing similarities in tools used for Public Relations and Marketing raise questions of how the two are different anymore. Is SEO PR or Marketing. While inbound marketing is something that some accept and some don’t, it would be superfluous to argue that marketing hasn’t evolved in the last couple of decades with ‘inbound’ as simply a new version. The same can be said for public relations and the methods and channels it uses. Modern marketing tools such SEO, social media or blogs can all be used in either a PR or marketing way. Search engine optimization establishes what the perceived image and related topics of a company can be; so it’s an image builder while also directing precise traffic to a place of accurate results. A simple Facebook post can introduce a new product/ service or it can establish a company opinion. Blogs can be informative in either a marketing tone of “here’s what we offer” or a PR angle of “why this product is good for consumers”. Technology. That’s why I (and likely you by now) have questioned where the line is drawn between PR and marketing. It’s all about the tools used. We may have a similar message to share, but we are looking for different results. How we get those results will overlap, but it’s how we interpret and analyze that information that defines the difference between public relations and marketing....
