Stop the Social Puppetry for Klout and Other Influence Metrics! | Pam Moore, Business 2 Community

Stop the Social Puppetry for Klout and Other Influence Metrics! | Pam Moore, Business 2 Community | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

The majority of the social ecosystem have unfortunately become puppets. Facebook told us to like, send, share, post more, ask for likes. Twitter told us to retweet, reply to tweets. If you were a good puppet your score would go up. The more time you spent behaving as a good puppet, the better you hoped your score would be.

Just as I wrote in this post “Forget the Klout Score, What’s Your Social Zoom Factor” I challenge people to ask themselves WHY! Why and what is it doing for you, your business, and your life to be a good social puppet?

Is Klout Really an Ad Network? Allen Stern

Is Klout Really an Ad Network? Allen Stern | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

For a while now, I’ve started to wonder if Klout is really just another advertising play/network wrapped up in a score which is wrapped up in a game?

Here is how the Klout advertising network works:

1. company (probably via their “social media agency”) wants to get some buzz going about their product/service

2. company hires Klout to share their product/service
3. Klout picks out users based on their score in a vertical
4. Users get the freebies and shill for said product
5. Company gets lots of tweets on Twitter (and tons of mentions for Klout as a side benefit)

What I don’t know is whether this ad network actually delivers value.

Redefining Social Media Influence - the Klout Debacle

Redefining Social Media Influence - the Klout Debacle | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

The problem is that Klout's new scoring method is neither more accurate nor more transparent. They have, in fact, made a serious mistake in attempting to redefine influence and may soon be paying a price equivalent to that of Netflix.

Nobody Gives A Damn About Your Klout Score

Nobody Gives A Damn About Your Klout Score | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

Nobody Gives A Damn About Your Klout Score. We all have an inherent sense of who is influential and when that doesn’t stack up against some dumb number we lose faith. Case in point; I think all of you understand that there’s something wrong with a service that assigns me the same “influence” score as Mike Arrington. I’m willing to bet Steve Jobs didn’t check his Klout score.

Is There Room for a Klout for Professionals?

Is There Room for a Klout for Professionals? | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

Klout no longer has that market to itself.

The Sarasota, Fla.-based PROskore is testing the waters for a sort of Klout for professionals, though PROskore CEO Bill Jula would likely recoil at the comparison. Jula says that the main difference between PROskore and Klout is that his company takes into account more than just social media.

Is Klout On the Way Out? | Jure Klepic in Social Media Today

Is Klout On the Way Out? | Jure Klepic in Social Media Today | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

In my opinion and the opinion of many, Klout is a game of online manipulation and popularity. There is no indication that Klout measures influence. However, it is clearly seen that the once respected Klout score is now measuring popularity, supports spam and gathering information to enhance their Klout Perks program.

Wasting Time on Klout and Influence Metrics

Yet great scores — the sign of someone who has had success — don’t necessarily produce context or relevance to an individual community or on a particular issue. Frankly, the most influential people in any given sector aren’t on social media. They hire people as community managers.

Fernando Fonseca - Google+ - How to get Klout to delete your profile permanently

Fernando Fonseca - Google+ - How to get Klout to delete your profile permanently | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

My dislike for Klout is well known and public. What some of you might not know is that my dislike, and distrust, on the service is not from now that were never properly answered.

This week I decided to have my account deleted permanently. Some said that it would be impossible, that Klout uses public data and that there would be nothing I could do.

Even going against all odds (and please do not start humming the bloody song... you just did, didn't you?) I went ahead with my decision.

MadKlout epidemic – monopolizing with flawed algorithm

MadKlout epidemic – monopolizing with flawed algorithm | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

Klout’s marketing strategy is to prematurely establish themselves as the only authentic providers of social ratings. To my despair, all the media outlets such as WSJ, CNN, Bloomberg, Silicon, Forbes are not analysing Klout objectively. Instead they just dance to Klout’s marketing tune without actually looking past the smokescreen of public relations. With all this coverage Klout seems to have set its eyes on establishing itself as a monopoly in the social ratings market by over speeding ahead of proving its credibility and true accuracy.

Questions and criticisms have been swirling around the changes to the Klout Score this past week. I decided to post some questions to Joe Fernandez, CEO of Klout. He was traveling so Megan Berry, Marketing Manager at Klout agreed to step in and answer on behalf of Klout.

Her response is below. It arrived Friday (24 hours after she offered to answer the questions) by email and as a comment – cited here - on a previous blog.

Should You Care How High Your Klout Score Is? - BusinessWeek

Should You Care How High Your Klout Score Is? - BusinessWeek | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

There has been howls of outrage on Klout’s blog, as well as a number of posts arguing that Klout scores are effectively meaningless, since no one really knows how the score is calculated. While these criticisms may be well founded, there is no question that measuring online influence is a huge potential market, and Klout is far from the only one doing it; Google, Twitter, and Facebook clearly have their eyes on that prize as well.
