YouTube's Radical Redesign Positions Google To Be Your New TV | Fast Company

YouTube's Radical Redesign Positions Google To Be Your New TV | Fast Company | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

Gone is YouTube's old cluttered image, with ill-defined boxes of widgets that seemingly blended into other nearby sections of the page. Gone is its use of large sections of white page. Instead, in their place, there's a smooth gray-tinted look and feel to Google's prime video site, and a massive emphasis on "channels" and curated categories.

YouTube revamp foreshadows Google's vision of media (Wired UK)

YouTube revamp foreshadows Google's vision of media (Wired UK) | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

Google wants the YouTube audience to become a destination site for media. Instead of a grid of one-offs, the redesigned front page features a feed running down the center of the site, which displays the top channels in a user's stream. Every feed will look different, with selected channels based on YouTube recommendations and sitewide viewing trends, what a user's friends are sharing on Facebook, Twitter and Google+, as well as those channels specifically chosen by the viewers themselves.

"We're trying to make everyone an effective programmer on YouTube," said AJ Crane, product manager at YouTube.

YouTube's Big Redesign is a Letdown

YouTube's Big Redesign is a Letdown | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

As someone who cut the cable cord and currently runs a home theater PC to my living room television, I'm a prime candidate for YouTube's new redesign--starved for original Web video to watch on the big screen. Sadly, the new design doesn't deliver, and neither does the new content. Here's why.

YouTube's new challenge: connecting users & channels

YouTube's new challenge: connecting users & channels | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

YouTube introduced a new homepage Thursday that puts more of a focus on personalization and social features, highlighting the content that’s most relevant to its users. But it does a poor job of showing off all the new content that YouTube is investing heavily in.

YouTube is reportedly spending more than $100 million on 100 new original channels. But you’d never know it, based on the new homepage design. The design provides more social features and a more personalized feed of content, but it lacks the ability for YouTube to showcase all of the new content that it’s paying big bucks for.

YouTube Redesign Targets Sharing, But Misses Mark

YouTube Redesign Targets Sharing, But Misses Mark | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

For me, YouTube has never been—and I can't ever imagine it will be—a place where I go to see aggregated videos shared by my friends on the various social networks that likely brought me to YouTube in the first place.
Instead of placing the emphasis on videos your friends have shared elsewhere, I would have liked to see YouTube focus its efforts on making the sharing experience of a video easier.

Google Prepares YouTube for Upcoming Media Battle

Google Prepares YouTube for Upcoming Media Battle | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it

YouTube now is completely immersed in the idea of channels. Channels in essence make every user of YouTube a television broadcaster. And I wont stop there. The reality is YouTube has added some incredibly powerful features that the big players in the industry, like HBO, Comedy Central, and more, have been asking for. You are about to see a swarm of high quality content make its way to YouTube. For the consumer, this will mean you are not far away from a world where YouTube will have all your video content. Sporting events, concerts, personal videos of your kids, prime time television. Is this a problem for content creation companies? Not really. Is this a problem for cable companies and other distribution channels? You bet.
