What do the social media experts look like who aren’t clowns? | Sonia Simone in Copyblogger via @ingeborgv | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it
Businesses need smart people who can help them figure social media out. What do the social media experts look like who aren’t clowns?
Gary Vaynerchuk, in his usual low-key, mellow way, said last month that 99.5% of social media experts are clowns.
If helping businesses use social media is part of what you do, how do you make sure you’re in the effective, business-savvy, non-clownlike 0.5%?
- Understand content marketing.
- Understand direct response copywriting.
- Be specific about your tool kit.
- Partner with complementary experts.
- Know what your clients need.

Social media is still a specialism | Stephen Davies in Sub:stantial

Social media is still a specialism | Stephen Davies in Sub:stantial | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it
Steve Rubel says it’s the “end of the road for social media gurus” and I disagree. I think there’s a long way to go before people stop earning a wage from specialising in social media. It reminds me of the whole “PR is dead and blogging killed it” meme from 2006.

The social media specialist/guru/geek/whatever will still be around in the foreseeable future.

Why Social Media Consultants are Coming in From the Cold — Shel Israel

More recently, the business conversation shifted from the fundamental question of “Why should we…” to “how can we,” and the consultants went from being lonely voices in the dark corners, to pragmatic educators of how new tools could be provide significant, scalable and sustainable improvements.

A decade of social media disruption is now coming to an end. To a very large number of mainstream enterprises, large and small, social media is just one more item to integrate into the workflow process. While a few years ago, there were just ideas, today there are processes.

I’d hire a social media expert, and maybe you should, too | Social Media Today

I’d hire a social media expert, and maybe you should, too | Social Media Today | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it
At companies like Dell and Gatorade, they’ve hired people just to monitor social media. They’re trained to know what to look for, to process analytics at a glance and to know what they should do with the insights they glean. Should that be part of everybody’s job? Well, to a degree, yes. But it’s all these staffers do. They’re experts.

Together, we could probably list 20 or 30 social media specialties where a company could benefit from the expertise of someone who spends all their time focused on it, learning it, executing for multiple clients, talking about it with peers.

Experts Trump Friends for Web Recommendations, A Study From Content-Sharing Company Meebo Says | Adweek | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it
To hear it from social networks, the key to converting consumers is through friends. But a new study suggests that you shouldn't underestimate the click-value of strangers.

According to research from Meebo, a social platform that connects friends across the Web, expertise trumps friendship when people are surfing the Web for content that matches their interests.

The study, which included a nationally representative sample of 1,473 people, found that 53 percent of Web users are looking for recommendations from "everyday experts," or strangers with knowledge on a specific topic.

The End of the Social Media Consultant? Mark Evans in Sysomos Blog | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it
In simple terms, social media as a standalone activity is coming to an end. If you are a social media consultant, you need to be really, really good at providing strategic counsel, as well as have in-depth knowledge of the tools and services need to execute tactically.

For everyone else, they will need to offer than just social media strategic and tactical services. Instead, they have to offer services that embrace communications, marketing and sales strategies and goals.

How are Social Media Marketing “Experts” like Foreclosed Homes?

How are Social Media Marketing “Experts” like Foreclosed Homes? | Brand & Content Curation | Scoop.it
If you take anything from this article, let it be this; Knowing how to set up a Facebook page no more makes one a Social Media Expert than having a camera makes one a professional photographer. Until employers put an end to their foolish quest for cheap Social Media "fixer-uppers," legitimate users of the craft who deserve more attention will continue to see their value diminished.
