The Detroit Bus Company - video- 5. 43 mn

"Young entrepreneur Andy Didorosi believes that the way to Detroit’s new era depends on better leadership and a solid connection between the city and the suburbs.

So when the city in 2012 axed its plans to build the M-1 light rail, the transit solution that would’ve bridged that vital connection, Didorosi was mad as hell. So what’s an angry young man in this situation supposed to do?

Well, Didorosi bought a bus, had a local artist trick it out with a wicked mural, and he started the Detroit Bus Company.

Dedicated to a more connected city, Andy Didorosi is bringing Detroit home one ride at a time.

"In the 1950s, Detroit was the 4th largest city in the US with a population around 2 million.  As de-industrialization process restructured the US economy, globalization restructured the world’s economy, and Detroit’s local economic strategy crumbled.  The tax base continued to shrink, city services were spread thin and the poor services encouraged people to migrate elsewhere.  Today, Detroit is $18-20 million in debt with a population around 700,000 and is unable to pull out of this nosedive.  Detroit filed for bankruptcy July 18, 2013 and became the largest U.S. city ever to file for bankruptcy and more importantly the first major American city to essentially fail.

With all this sad news, there are still glimmers of sucess as seen in this video.  Some entrepreneurs and local have stepped in as the city government has been unable to manage the needs of a large city creating organizations such as the Detroit Bus Company. "

THE BANGLES "Eternal Flame"

"Close your eyes, give me your hand, darlin'
Do you feel my heart beating
Do you understand
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming
Is this burning an eternal flame

I believe it's meant to be, darlin'
I watch you when you are sleeping
You belong with me
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame

Say my name
Sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely
And then come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling, oh

Say my name
Sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely
And then come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling, oh

Close your eyes, give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating
Do you understand
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darlin'
Do you feel my heart beating
Do you understand
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming
Is this burning an eternal flame

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darlin'
Do you feel my heart beating
Do you understand
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming, ah
An eternal flame

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darlin'
Do you feel my heart beating
Do you understand
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming, ah
Is this burning an eternal flame

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darlin'"

HIP-HOP AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Stephen Mayeux is the founder of ESLhiphop.com. He is also the Head of Teaching at OKpanda

English as a Second Language teacher Stephen Mayeux enjoys hip-hop. So he figured his students at UC-Davis might, too.

He crafted lesson plans around 1990s hip-hop. N.W.A.’s "Straight Outta Compton" has come in handy teaching reductions in English — for example, how “out of” gets shortened."They’re saying 'straight out of Compton,'” Mayeux said. “But I think a lot of people, especially Americans, we pronounce it 'outta.'”

Mayex shares his lessons with students outside of his Hip-hop as a Second Language class through his website eslhiphop.com.He said some educators might frown on what he's teaching. But, as someone who's studied linguistics, he believes "you have to treat every form or variety of the language as if it’s equally complex and valid."

There's a lot to learn. But because slang is constantly evolving, there aren’t many teaching materials devoted to it. Texts get dated faster than you can say YOLO.So teachers are often left to find their own method of teaching American lingo, in ways creative and resourceful.

"So the English that a rapper or hip-hop artist uses is no better or worse than what a university professor is using," Mayeux said.

FITTING IN

Mayeux also uses the music to take the opportunity toTEACH ABOUT HIP-HOP CULTURE, and give the students some context for what it is like to grow up in America. He said that he has many close friends from other countries, and a lack of understanding about pop culture can leave them feeling left out."They do experience a little bit of alienation," Mayeux said. "They feel like they can’t be fully part of the group because they’re not speaking the same lingo."

Judy Tanka, who teaches English at the American Language Center, agreed.”You may understand every word of the lecture," Tanka said. "But when you have to go to your study group or you have to call a classmate, slang is going to be necessary."

Tanka tries to incorporate slang into her everyday conversation with her students. She stays on top of the latest lingo with the help of a daughter in her 20s, but she finds a surprising number of phrases have stayed popular through the decades.

When her students tried to make up an excuse for not doing homework, she told them, "I don’t buy that.""And they looked at me. 'Buy what, teacher?' And then I explained and they loved it. Now they’re telling each other, 'I don’t buy that.'”

Jiu Hua Zhang of China and Donald Chung of Taiwan are studying conversational English at UCLA's Extension School.Donald Chung stood in front of his classmates at the UCLA Extension school and started to throw a fit — well, as much as the mild–mannered student from Taiwan could muster.

"I don't know what he's trying to pull," Chung said. "The guy's a total flake!"His friend Jiu Hua Zhang chimed in: "You said it!"

The students had spent a good portion of the class practicing these expressions as part of their "street talk" course. In many foreign countries, English classes start as early as pre-school. But thousands of students still come to the US to get what they can't get back home: the idioms, the catchphrases — the slang.

“My conversation is more academic, or more like an essay,” Zhang said. “I need to be more, like, American.”
She and Chung enrolled less than half a year ago at UCLA Extension's American Language Center, one of multiple schools throughout California offering street talk classes. Zhang wants to get all of the jokes on her favorite American sitcom, "The Big Bang Theory."

Chung would like to catch what commentators are saying during NBA games. "I think it's very difficult to understand what they're talking about because they use some vocabulary I can't understand," he said, sounding frustrated.

Wet Wet Wet – Love Is All Around LyricsI feel it in my fingers
I feel it in my toes
Love is all around me
And so the feeling grows

It's written on the wind
It's everywhere I go,
So if you really love me
Come on and let it show

You know I love you, I always will
My mind's made up by the
Way that I feel
There's no beginning,
There'll be no end
'cause on my love you can depend

I see your face before me
As I lay on my bed
I kinda get to thinking
Of all the things you said, oh yes I did
You gave your promise to me and I
Gave mine to you
I need someone beside me
In everything I do,

You know I love you, I always will,
My mind's made up by the
Way that I feel
There's no beginning,
There'll be no end
'cause on my love you can depend

Got to keep it moving

Oh It's written in the wind
Oh everywhere I go, yeah, oh well
So if you really love me, love me, love me
Come on and let it show
Come on and let it show
Come on and let it
Come on and let it (come and let it show, baby)
Come on, come on, come on let it show baby
Come on and let it show

The Koch Brothers & Their Amazing Climate Change Denial Machine - pouring money into bogus scientific studies, corrupted Think Tanks & Front Groups ( college, Seniors, church, Women's ect)

"A short animation detailing the effort of billionaires oil barons Charles & David Koch to undermine belief in climate change and prevent legislation that threatens their profits.

By pouring money into bogus scientific studies and funding third parties such as Think Tanks and Front Groups (posing as everything from Seniors groups to Women's groups) the public is led to believe a genuine scientific debate is raging. In truth, as one climate denier candidly admits, those doubting the science are just a small, if brilliantly coordinated, minority.

The piece was made by Australian filmmaker Taki Oldham and incorporates footage from his 55 min. documentary The Billionaires' Tea Party (2011).

Big thanks to the visual effects team at Hungry Beast (hungrybeast.abc.net.au) for their advice and visual inspiration as well to the team at Greenpeace for their great research on the Koch Brothers (greenpeace.org/kochindustries)."

"In this powerful song, Immortal Technique describes how drugs and crime are destroying communities every day.

He tells a story about a boy named William who abandons his mother and morals in order to live a lavish life of money, drugs and women.

The end of the story is as surprising as it is shocking. Please review these words and phrases and then listen to the song."

Immortal Technique is a Peruvian born American rapper as well as an urban activist. He was born in Lima and raised in Harlem, New York. Most of his lyrics focus on controversial issues in global politics and are largely commentary on issues such as class struggle, Marxism,  poverty, religion, government, imperialism & institutional racism.

Immortal Technique has voiced a desire to retain control over his production and has stated in his music that record companies, not artists themselves, profit the most from mass production and marketing of music.

He claimed in an interview to have sold close to a combined total of 200,000 copies of his three official releases (taken verbatim from Wikipedia).

"Everyone trying to be trife never face the consequences. You probably only did a month for minor offences. Ask a nigga doing life if he had another chance, but then again there’s always the wicked that knew in advance. Dance forever with the devil on a cold cell block, but that’s what happens when you rape, murder and sell rock. Devils used to be God’s angels that fell from the top. There’s no diversity because we’re burning in the melting pot"

This man, in an attempt to be a "different kind" of artist, has developed a method whereby he paints exclusively with his tongue.

Behold:

The artist's name is Ani K and when he isn't tilting his head at odd angles to achieve nuanced brushstrokes, he's a schoolteacher in Kerala, southern India.

"I wanted to be a different kind of artist," he says by way of explanation in the above video.

An age-old impulse, to be sure. But while some seek distinction through the content of their work, Ani K opted to explore the possiblities of form and method.

He didn't jump straight to the tongue.

"I have tried painting with my nose, tried painting with my chin, my elbows and feet," the 35-year-old said. "I also tried drawing with both hands simultaneously, and also while riding on a moving bike."

The tongue, in the end, would serve Ani K, though not without a price.

"After painting with my tongue, I experience pain in my jaws, headaches, slight loss of vision and dip in memory power," he says. "The side effects stay around for two weeks."

With a slip of his tongue, Ani K has painted more than 1,000 works — including an eight-foot Da Vinci and a portrait of Jesus Christ. Keepin' it classic in some ways at least.

If the tongue won't lead Ani K to stardom, there are other ways.

"For the Guiness Records," he says, "I am going to paint four portraits using both hands and both feet at the same time.

Do send word when you do, Ani K. Don't bite your tongue.

The Great Divide: Global income inequality and its cost

The Great Divide: Global income inequality and its cost | Brainfriendly, motivating videos to learn English B1 B2 and over (European standard) | Scoop.it

Income inequality is surging, and there are few countries where it is rising faster than the United States.

The distance between rich and poor is greater in America than nearly all other developed countries, making the US a leader in a trend that economists warn has dire consequences.

GlobalPost sets out on a reporting journey to get at the ‘ground truth’ of inequality through the lenses of education, race, immigration, health care, government, labor and natural resources.

The hope is to hold a mirror up to the US to see how it compares to countries around the world.

Watch this badass Catholic nun rock Alicia Keys on Italy's 'The Voice'

Watch this badass Catholic nun rock Alicia Keys on Italy's 'The Voice' | Brainfriendly, motivating videos to learn English B1 B2 and over (European standard) | Scoop.it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpaQYSd75Ak

"Pope Francis isn't the only one changing the face of Catholicism these days.By the grace of God go this nun.

This is so great. A Catholic nun in full habit sang Alicia Keys' "No One" on Italy's version of "The Voice" this week.

She didn't just sing it. She rocked it:

The video is so great, largely because the nun, 25-year-old Sicilian Cristina Scuccia, has kickin' pipes, but also because the audition is blind, and you get to see the judges' faces when they turn around to take in the fact that the woman singing is indeed Sister Scuccia.

You also get to see the Ursuline Sisters of the Holy Family bob up and down with excitement as their fellow sister wins accolades from the judges and audience alike.

Needless to say, Scuccia made it onto the show, according to the Washington Post. We'll see what happens next.

Scuccia says it would be nice to win, but she's really in it for the love of song. No wait, actually she's there to spread the word of God.

"I came here because I have a gift, and I want to share that gift. I am here to evangelize," she told the judges.

Pope Francis isn't the only one changing the face of Catholicism.

"The Voice" originated in The Netherlands, and like so many of these talent-based reality TV shows it has spinoffs in more than a dozen countries.

Not only does the global mish-mash of these shows make for stellar entertainment, but it also provides a fascinating barometer of the cultural tide.

Let's not forget the 23-year-old from Cambridge, Mass., who made it to the finals on "Arabs Got Talent" singing classical Arabic music.

It's a big world. Things are getting mixed up. Sometimes in awesome ways.
