How China chokes its neighbors | Brainfriendly, motivating stuff for ESL EFL learners | Scoop.it
Asia’s latest diplomatic flashpoint? Air pollution.

"

FUKUOKA, Japan — When the Chinese smog arrives, the medical masks come in fashion.

Every few months, this city of 1.5 million people in southern Japan, not far from mainland China, gets a dose of lung clogging courtesy of its neighbor.

Coal factories in the cities of Tianjin and Beijing, combined with the growing numbers of automobiles, pump out toxins that drift westward across the East China Sea. They hit Japan and, to a lesser extent, South Korea.

The most recent air pollution crisis came in February, when a whitish gray blanket of smog fell over Fukuoka. The city government put out an advisory on its early warning system — the first in Japan, started that month — urging everybody, and especially infants and the elderly, to stay indoors and wear face masks outside.

.........

The air pollution problem has become so pervasive that it has joined the list of diplomatic issues on the table between three fractious nations: China, which produces much of it, and Japan and South Korea, on its receiving......"

New Habit? Make the Smallest Change Possible

New Habit? Make the Smallest Change Possible | Brainfriendly, motivating stuff for ESL EFL learners | Scoop.it
Finding a new normal is the key to habit change.

"

New Habit? Make the Smallest Change Possible“Once you take that first step, you have a bit of forward momentum. And it’s much easier to be consistent and stick with something for a long time.” - Leo Babauta

Habit change is usually at the core of any personal or professional development. At its simplest level, it’s simply the process of changing what is “normal” behavior for yourself.

Leo Babauta shares his process for changing his normal:

Start small

Get started

Enjoy the change

Stick to the change

Adjust again

The most important idea is to focus on making the smallest change possible. Trying to make too big of a change will cause your mind to rebel and the habit change to stall before it really gets going. By keeping it small you give yourself the constant progress that will result in a new habit being developed.

Avoir accès à du matériel authentique. Il faut des extraits audio et vidéo provenant de réels échanges et situations qui emploient le langage (verbal et non verbal). Hey Arnold! is an American animated television series that aired from October 7, 1996 until June 8, 2004 on Nickelodeon.

"The show stars fourth grader Arnold, a boy who lives with his paternal grandparents, Phil and Gertrude, proprietors of the Sunset Arms boarding house. In each episode, Arnold often helps a schoolmate solve a personal problem, or encounters a predicament of his own. The show also focuses on Arnold’s classmate, Helga, who often treats Arnold cruelly and bullies him constantly. However, a recurring theme of the show is the fact that Helga pretends to dislike Arnold to hide the fact that she is secretly in love with him. "

" What's the show supposed to be about? http://www.hey-arnold.com/

The "life in the big city as seen through the eyes of a nine-year old boy fourth-grade with a football-shaped head"and a vivid imagination", usually dressed in a school uniform, complete with little hat , an attic room with skylight and remote-controlled furniture. He is always daydreaming, whether in church, in school, or just watching TV - and his daydreams are quite vivid. "

e  ."

"After Arnold's parents left him with his grandparents before leaving (and never being seen again), Arnold lives in their boarding house ("No Kids - Pets OK"). Okay, he's also a little more laid back and enjoys jazz a little more than your typical fourth-grader, too.  Arnold is named for his mother's father."

Astronaut Covers David Bowie in Space

Astronaut Covers David Bowie in Space | Brainfriendly, motivating stuff for ESL EFL learners | Scoop.it
Cmdr. Chris Hadfield makes first music video in space

Cmdr. Chris Hadfield pulled off a cover of David Bowie's 1969 classic "Space Oddity" like nobody else has: in space. Hadfield, a Canadian astronaut, recorded the vocals and guitar to this moving rendition while in orbit on the International Space Station, and this contemplative clip – said to be the first music video shot in space – shows Hadfield roaming the vessel alone. "I'm floating in the most peculiar way," sings Hadfield, adrift in zero gravity with an acoustic guitar. He returns to Earth at the end, touching down in an escape pod as the song fades out. A cover has rarely been this fitting.

David Bowie lyrics and video: "Space Oddity"

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/david+bowie/space+oddity_20036711.html

“Space Oddity”: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/song-stories/space-oddity-david-bowie
David Bowie's story of an astronaut who detaches himself from earthly communication progressed like a rocket launch, moving from an opening countdown to an ethereal drift into space.

Released to coincide with the buildup to the first moon landing in the summer of 1969, it gave Bowie his first British hit, cracking the US Top Twenty when it was re-released in 1973.

It was written, he told Performing Songwriter, "because of going to see the film 2001, which I found amazing....I was very stoned when I went to see it, several times, and it was really a revelation to me.".
The title and subject matter were inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and introduced the character of Major Tom.

Wikipedia: Major Tom is a fictional astronaut created by David Bowie, heard in his songs "Space Oddity", "Ashes to Ashes", and "Hallo Spaceboy" (particularly in the remix by the Pet Shop Boys). Bowie's own interpretation of the character evolved throughout his career. 1969's "Space Oddity" depicts an astronaut who casually slips the bonds of the world to journey beyond the stars. In the 1980 song "Ashes to Ashes," Bowie reinterprets Major Tom as an oblique autobiographical symbol for himself. Major Tom is described as a "junkie, strung out in heavens high, hitting an all-time low".

9 Questions To Ask About Your Social Media Addiction

9 Questions To Ask About Your Social Media Addiction | Brainfriendly, motivating stuff for ESL EFL learners | Scoop.it
Are you missing out on the details of your life because of your fear of missing out?

"

Social media teaches us to take a reactive stance. Just log onto Twitter or Facebook and the information streams in incessantly. You could spend your entire lifetime (and then some) just replying to other peoples’ updates. But if we want social media to truly serve us, we need to start taking a more mindful approach to how we use it.
In our new 99U book, Tiny Buddha’s Lori Deschene offers up a handful of hard-hitting questions we should all be asking ourselves:

   * Is it necessary to share this? Will it add value to my life and for other people?
   * Can I share this experience later so I can focus on living it now?
   * Am I looking for validation? Is there something I could do to validate myself?
   * Am I avoiding something I need to do instead of addressing why I don’t want to do it?
   * Am I feeling bored? Is there something else I could do to feel more purposeful and engaged in my day?
   * Am I feeling lonely? Have I created opportunities for meaningful connection in my day?
   * Am I afraid of missing out? Is the gratification of giving in to that fear worth missing out on what’s in front of me?
   * Am I overwhelming myself, trying to catchup? Can I let go of yesterday’s conversation and join today’s instead?
   * Can I use this time to simply be instead of looking for something to do to fill it?

This is an excerpt from Manage Your Day-to-Day, the new book from 99U, with contributions from Lori Deschene, Gretchen Rubin, Scott Belsky, Seth Godin, and many more.

American Indian tribes turn to technology in race to save endangered languages | Brainfriendly, motivating stuff for ESL EFL learners | Scoop.it

[Excerpt]: "Today, most tribes across the country are making some type of effort toward a language comeback, according to Leanne Hinton, a Berkeley linguistics professor and board member of the Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival.

Those efforts include everything from apprenticeship programs that pair a fluent elder with a student, to immersion school programs. Many also incorporate technology such as YouTube videos of native speakers or Google Hangout video chats for live, long-distance conversations."
