Interesting cultures showing that people have a need to identify with their peers to be one step ahead of the crowd, I guess
Kaitlin Young's curator insight, September 17, 2014 12:35 PM

When considering subcultures, it is sometimes easy to forget that they exist in other countries. While I was familiar with groups such as the "chavs" in England, and the Dandies in the Congo, I never realized that some subcultures that are prevalent in the USA exist in places such as Indonesia. It's amazing to see how some fads have globalized and are present in different places. I doubt that the Ramones, while making music in their garage would dream that they would spark a globally present subculture.

"In the last decade cutting-edge techniques have radically transformed planet hunting. Against a background of frenetic discovery, an elite band of scientists are looking for something new: alien civilisations."

"If it's ever going to happen, it'll happen before the mid-part of this century." As part of a global team searching for signals from E.T., Dr Seth Shostak is on the front-line of a dynamic field of research. And though a breakthrough remains elusive, the team remains optimistic that the universe is big enough for the truth to still be out there - according to head astronomer Dr. Jill Tarter, "It would be an awful waste of space if we are all there is."

Journeyman pictures makes intelligent and well-documented documentaries.

Many of their trailers can be used for lesson plans

Good documentary. Clear dictions, lively intonations.
the transcript makes it a great resource for various levels of listening & reading comprehension. The script isn't too difficult ( French standards:B1) A summary + some video extracts could easily be made for A2. Could make a great lesson plan.

Super Bowl advertising goes epic- with mini-soap operas from Chrysler, Samsung, Anheuser-Busch | Brainfriendly, motivating stuff for ESL EFL learners | Scoop.it

The Washington Post

Aulde de Barbuat's insight:

Why are marketing strategies changing ?"

"With 30-second spots going for as much as $4 million and more than 111 million viewers expected to tune in, marketers are constantly looking for ways to make their ads stand out." "It’s increasingly difficult to captivate viewers with short-form plots involving babies, celebrities, sex and humor — unless there’s a compelling story attached."

So,“A lot of advertisers are running "MINI SOAP OPERAS, TEAR-JERKING MINI EPICS, USER-INSPIRED TALES, COMEDY  " that often engage people  in a very emotional way,”

A few, like GoDaddy.com’s ad, criticised for being sexist, "stuck with short, quirky spots with no particular plot. It showed a close up, extended kiss between supermodel Bar Refaeli and a nerdy guy wearing glasses to illustrate GoDaddy’s combo of “sexy” and “smart.”"

I provide my.. handicapped dog with the choice to engage in walking every day; she loves it.

When children engage in activities they view as pleasurable, and when the projects are ones they have chosen, just as Maddie does, dopamine is released in the brain. This neurotransmitter increases attention and helps information to be stored in long-term memory.1

When children choose to engage in academic work, there is joy.

Let's not lose track of one important goal of learning: making sense of the world for the pure joy of it. That is sniffing for a dog or joy of discovery for children. Learning will naturally follow.

Be Long On Authenticity and Short on Conformity

Be Long On Authenticity and Short on Conformity | Brainfriendly, motivating stuff for ESL EFL learners | Scoop.it

"There’s a world of difference between fitting in and belonging. Fitting in is trying to squeeze into a pair of skinny jeans. There’s nothing wrong with skinny jeans. But sometimes you just want to relax and let it all hang out.

Fitting in forces you to change your shape. It can cut off the circulation from your authentic life blood. It’s the same with conformity. You have to become someone you aren’t in order to find a place in a group of family, or whatever it is. That’s no way to live. Its stifling, suffocating, soul destroying.

Belonging, on the other hand, is liberating. Belonging, on the other hand, is liberating. Its like wearing your pajamas all day, or as we say in Australia hanging in your “tracky dacks.” They’re just so comfortable, and if you wear them long enough they feel like part of you.

That’s how authenticity works. You decide who you are, and wear it often enough, it becomes you."

Aulde de Barbuat's insight:

Reading . Food for thought .Words of wisdom
