Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, March 12, 2013 1:46 PM

The study of 2,490 respondents aged 12 – 17 years old from the US, Poland, Germany and the UK, looked at how this new digital generation connects with the internet, what they do online, and how they feel about digital and traditional advertisements.

The survey found that teenagers in all four markets enjoy unlimited and unsupervised access to the internet. Respondents reported that they are able to go online as long and as often as they wish, they do not need to ask for parental permission, and only in Germany are teenagers required to share internet access with siblings. 62% of the young people surveyed report that they go online every single day - 46% several times a day. Age does not make a big difference when comparing the amount of time teens spend on the net. There is no sudden explosion in internet use at the age of 16; more a gradual increase in the amount of time spent online as children age. Of those who go online several times a day, 11% are 12 years old and 21% are 17 years old. Teenagers in the UK and Poland use the internet 20% more often than their counterparts in Germany and America.

"Pig Business" the Film: the true cost of cheap meat, the dark side of factory farming.

Pig Business investigates the rise of factory pig farming, a system which abuses animals, pollutes the environment, threatens human health through dangerous ...

The film site Pig Business: http://www.pigbusiness.co.uk/

Their youtube channel :

https://www.youtube.com/user/PigBusinessFilm?feature=watch

Jamie Oliver, TV chef and campaigner

“…. I think Pig Business is an extremely important film. It really hammers home the darker side of the global pig farming industry.”

Zac Goldsmith, British MP

“What is casually described as ‘cheap food’ is so often nothing of the sort. This powerful film reveals the full impact of factory farming on people and the global environment, and exposes the horrors experienced by the pigs themselves. It will leave people in no doubt about the true cost of factory farming.”

Robert F. Kennedy Jnr, Nephew of Jack Kennedy, founder of Waterkeeper Alliance and environmental lawyer

“This film exposes the truth about factory farming. It shows how it cannot produce a pork chop or bacon cheaper than a family farmer unless it breaks the law. Factory farming profits by externalising the true costs on to the public through sickness and degraded soil, contaminated water and air. In the process it destroys both the economy and democracy by concentrating power and money into the hands of a few giant corporations. Watch the film to see how we can reclaim control over our lives.”

"What is Pig Business?

http://www.pigbusiness.co.uk/about-us/

"Pig Business is a film and campaign that supports people across the world who are campaigning against factory pig farming, a system that abuses animals, threatens our health by overusing antibiotics, destroys rural communities, and pollutes the air and water. Campaigners can use one of our 20 language versions, or their country-specific version, as a tool to expose the true costs of factory farming and so empower their fight to prevent planning permission being granted for new farms and clean up or close existing farms.

In the film we explain the social, environmental and health benefits of locally produced pork and show how consumers can support sustainable, small scale, high welfare farms."

What is our aim?

To empower local campaigners living near factory farms and inform consumers, politicians, educators, institutions and government agencies of the true cost of factory pig farming.

Pig Business has been broadcast three times on Channel 4 (UK) and around the world; translated( subtitled)  into 20 languages; had 110,000 views on YouTube; we know of over 100 international screenings; 278 schools in the UK are using it as an educational resource and there have been screenings at three high profile parliamentary events.

http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_analysis/1639415/comment_using_film_to_square_up_to_the_horrors_of_factory_farming.html

Aulde de Barbuat's insight:

This powerful documentary subtitled in 20 languages ( accessible on the film site & its  youtube film channel ) exposes, among other things, the outsourcing of factory farming to European and third world countries where  regulations are the least stringent and then exported back to countries such as The United Kingdom where producing that way is illegal.

The real cost of huge "meat factories" on the environment and health of the consumers and people living nearby,  the horrors inflicted to the pigs themselves are clearly described.

Pig Business the Film: - USA Version: the true cost of cheap meat, the dark side of factory farming.

Pig Business investigates the rise of factory pig farming, a system which abuses animals, pollutes the environment, threatens human health through dangerous overuse of antibiotics, and wrecks rural communities.

The film shows how this system which was developed in the USA is now being used in eastern Europe from where the pork, often produced below legal animal welfare standards, is exported to other EU countries putting local farmers out of business.

Also check the English version,  the film website and additional videos here:

Aulde de Barbuat's insight:

Thi American version enhance the way agri-corporations have  shaped the American farming and agriculture  model which they have been  exporting all over the world by intense lobbying & campaign financing .

The dreadful consequences on health and the environment have been resolutely  ignored .

Many diseases, which  have become antibiotics resistant, are spreading all over the world.

#2 Women in Refrigerators (Tropes vs. Women) Representations of women in comics

Women in Refrigerators is a trope identified by comic book fan (and now comic book writer) Gail Simone because she was sick of seeing "superheroines who have been either depowered, raped, or cut up and stuck in the refrigerator." This is the second of a six part series created for Bitch Magazine - http://bitchmagazine.org

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBBDFEC9F5893C4AF
"Tropes vs. Women is a 6 part video series created for Bitch Media that explores the reoccurring stories, themes and representations of women in Hollywood films, TV shows, comics, video games and in various media."

"A trope is a common pattern in a story or a recognizable attribute in a character that conveys information to the audience. A trope becomes a cliche when it's overused. Sadly, some of these tropes often perpetuate offensive stereotypes"

"Feminist Frequency, a video webseries that explores the representations of women in pop culture narratives. Anita Sarkeesian is a media critic and the creator of the web series. Her work focuses on deconstructing the stereotypes and tropes associated with women in popular culture as well as highlighting issues surrounding the targeted harassment of women in online and gaming spaces "  http://www.feministfrequency.com/

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, March 14, 2013 12:02 PM

In a sense, it’s a generational thing. In 1980, the writer Bruce Bethke – whose short story “Cyberpunk” inadvertently christened the genre – was working at a Radio Shack in Wisconsin, selling TRS-80 microcomputers. One day, a group of teenagers waltzed in and hacked one of the store machines, and Bethke, who’d imagined himself a tech wiz, couldn’t figure out how to fix it. It was after this incident that he realized something: these teenaged hackers were going to sire kids of their own someday, and those kids were going to have a technological fluency that he could only guess at. They, he writes, were going to truly “speak computer.” And, like teenagers of any era, they were going to be selfish, morally vacuous, and cynical.

Conversation Questions for the ESL/EFL Classroom (I-TESL-J)

Interesting questions for discussions in English lessons.
Aulde de Barbuat's insight:
"Teacher's Guide This are a large group of questions which you can use in your ESL conversation classes. Some Ways to Use These Questions in the Classroom • Print out the questions and let students work in pairs asking the questions alternately. • Divide the questions into 2 pages, give half the questions to one student and half to another and let them work in pairs asking each other the questions. Students should be encouraged not to look at the other student's paper. • In a small class, the teacher may want to use the questions to get a conversation going about a given topic. In this case, the students aren't given a copy of the questions. Before Using the Questions • You may --save the page "as text", --edit it to be more appropriate for your own students. For example: ◦ --Delete questions which you feel are inappropriate. -- Localize the questions to your country or city. --◦Sort the questions into a sequence which you like. --Add any additional questions you can think of. (It would be nice to also add those questions to the master list, so all teachers can use them.)"
