Blended learning and the flipped classroom

Blended learning and the flipped classroom | Brainfriendly learning methods, tools, environments and communities. | Scoop.it

What exactly do these terms mean? How much online content is the right amount? What sorts of sites and apps should we be using? How can we convincingly recommend new technologies to students who are more technologically savvy than we are? Do we need a radical rethink of the way we present information to learners?

"Where students of all ages retain the kindergarten enthusiasm....[for] the joy of learning".... Now that is what I hope for in my students everyday. That joy and enthusiasm. Now we know this type of joyful, playful atmosphere enables better imprinting of information into accessible memories. Let's get back to kindergarten thinking!

LSE Learning Technology and Innovation's curator insight, August 1, 5:49 AM

Learning that is rewarding is also learning that's more effective. The challenge lies in producing engaging pedagogies which promote discovery and the joys of learning; something that can be quite challenging in an increasingly metrics driven sector

If students are stressed out, the information cannot get in.

The factors that have been found to affect this comfort level such as self-confidence, trust and positive feelings for teachers, and supportive classroom and school communities are directly related to the state of mind compatible with the most successful learning, remembering, and higher-order thinking

Young people today are instant messengers, gamers, photo sharers and supreme multitaskers. But while they use the technology tools available to them 24/7, they are struggling to sort fact from fiction, think critically, decipher cultural inferences, detect commercial intent and analyze social implications. All of which makes them extremely vulnerable to the overwhelming amount of information they have access to

Digital teaching portfolios for the enhancement of teaching and learning

Digital teaching portfolios for the enhancement of teaching and learning | Brainfriendly learning methods, tools, environments and communities. | Scoop.it

At an individual level, digital teaching portfolio offers a context for articulating one’s teaching philosophy, reflecting upon one’s teaching, documenting evidence of teaching accomplishments for present and future employers, and through which, one’s pride and esteem for teaching, as well as teaching practices could be enhanced. At a community level, teaching portfolio encourages inquiry-based dialogues on teaching, facilitates the process of mentoring junior teaching staff and offers resources which helps develop effective criteria for teaching in a tertiary institution.

Grammarly to check and improve your grammar

Grammarly to check and improve your grammar | Brainfriendly learning methods, tools, environments and communities. | Scoop.it

Even the most confident of native speakers can sometimes have doubts about their spelling and grammar. As for learners of English, getting their writing to a really high degree of proficiency can be a real challenge. It’s great to have a friend to turn to in moments of doubt or better still someone who will proof read your work and give you a second opinion, but if you don’t have that luxury then the Grammarly plagiarism checker is probably the next best thing.

Digital Gaming and Language Learning: Autonomy and Community

Digital Gaming and Language Learning: Autonomy and Community | Brainfriendly learning methods, tools, environments and communities. | Scoop.it

Drawing on rich data from gaming sessions, stimulated recall, focus group discussion, individual interviews and online discussion forums, this paper argues that gamers exercise autonomy by managing their gameplay both as leisure and learning practices in different dimensions (location, formality, locus of control, pedagogy and trajectory). At the same time, gameplay-as-learning practices are supported by wider communities of digital gamers who take on roles as language teachers and advisers. The paper suggests that activities in these dimensions mediated learning autonomously and from community, and discusses the research and pedagogical implications for L2 gaming and learning.

We're About to Tell You the Secret to Creativity, and You May NOT Want to Sit Down - InformED | Brainfriendly learning methods, tools, environments and communities. | Scoop.it

The study found that walking indoors or outdoors similarly boosted creative inspiration. The act of walking itself, and not the environment, was the main factor. A person walking indoors – on a treadmill in a room facing a blank wall – produced twice as many creative responses compared to a person sitting down.

'It’s important to note that, according to the study, the type of creativity affected by walking is associated with “divergent,” rather than “convergent,” thinking. In other words, walking benefits creative brainstorming but not the kind of focused thinking required for single, correct answers.'

While textbooks are clearly not obsolete, schools like Lawrence Intermediate School are learning to adapt to the impact the Internet is having on students — and figuring out how to take advantage of what it has to offer. In the end, there is no single right way to get kids engaged in learning, but it’s clear that these kids, at least, who are working in a SOLE environment feel a sense of empowerment, confidence and maturity.
