Getting boys back into books

Getting boys back into books | Boys and Reading | Scoop.it

"With strong competition from computer games and social media, many teenage boys do not choose to read for pleasure.

But studies show those who keep reading do much better in adult life, whatever their social background.

That is why Children's Laureate, Malorie Blackman, wants to get boys back into books.

The BBC's Tim Muffett went with her to a school in Bromley to meet some of the teenagers there."

Heather Stapleton's insight:

Malorie discusses reading with a group of boys in the video.

"One of the members of a children’s literature listserv send a query to the group.  She explained that she was writing historical fiction and that the setting of her book was the South during the Great Depression.  One of her characters was a teenage boy who was poor, athletic and used reading as his escape. ' What kinds of books would that kind of a boy read?' she asked the group."

Engaging Boys in Literacy

"Boys need a sense of purpose in order to engage with what they do. Give them an audience, create real ‘wow’ moments and help develop a love of fiction. Gary Wilson explores some practical ways in which you can help to engage boys."

Engaging teens with reading | Services to Schools

"There is ongoing discussion in education about teens not reading as they used to do. However, this is confused by different perceptions about what ‘reading’ means. Because of the digital environment, literacy for teens today may involve multimodal delivery platforms. In other words, they’re still reading (and writing) - just not always in the traditional ‘book’ way.

This section looks at the area of teen reading, the benefits, motivations and types of reading that they engage with."

Here, we outline six elements of instruction that every child should experience every day. OECD educationtoday: Boys, girls and hypertext

OECD educationtoday: Boys, girls and hypertext | Boys and Reading | Scoop.it

"In 2009 PISA conducted a groundbreaking survey of digital literacy among 15-year-old students. PISA wanted to find out whether boys and girls are as ready for the digital age as they—and we—think they are... [ http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/29/22/49442737.pdf ]

Perhaps the most interesting finding from this assessment has to do with the difference in digital literacy between girls and boys. Since the beginning of the PISA tests in 2000, girls have always scored higher in reading than boys–and by a substantial margin: the equivalent of one year of formal schooling. While this is still true for reading digital texts, the performance gap is significantly narrower: 24 score points compared with 38 score points in print reading.

A closer look at these results showed that there was a larger percentage of boys at the highest proficiency levels in digital reading than at the highest levels in print reading, and a smaller percentage of boys at the bottom proficiency levels in digital reading scale than at the bottom level in print reading."

"Author Walter Dean Myers is the nation's latest ambassador for young people's literature. The two-year post is something like a youth version of poet laureate. As a young man in Harlem, Myers hid his books so no one would know he liked to read. David Greene talks to Myers about his appointment and what he wants to accomplish."

Getting boys to read can take time

Getting boys to read can take time | Boys and Reading | Scoop.it

"'Teen boys’ aversion to reading has caused them to performat lower levels than girls on standardized reading assessments. This has caught both national and local attention.

Rob Guyette, De Pere High School English teacher and author of 'A Year in the Cave,' devised a strategy to combat this gender gap.

'We needed to try and get some boys to take reading more seriously,' he says. 'I believed boys would read if you gave them books they are interested in.'"

Embarrassed to Read by Donalyn Miller

Embarrassed to Read by Donalyn Miller | Boys and Reading | Scoop.it

"In modern society, children’s future success depends on their acquisition of literacy skills. Children must learn to read and write in order to achieve an education and perform job and life functions that require accessing and communicating information. Possession of fundamental literacy falls within our social norms. There seems to be a line, however, between reading well enough and reading as a leisure pursuit. It’s OK for children to read when called upon, but if they would rather read than watch TV or play outside, they are social outliers.

I fight this perception that reading is nerdy with my students every year. I make it my mission to entice the most popular kids with great books and positive reading experiences because I know that if I can show them that reading is cool, other kids will want to read, too."

The Reluctant Reader by Heather Cato

"I know it’s not a contest or anything, but I bet that when I began teaching language arts I had read fewer books of any kind than any other language arts teacher in the history of public education. I never liked reading as a kid, but I can vividly remember the first time I took my students down to our antique, two-sizes-too small library to check out books. With the signatures on my diploma still wet, I was excited to begin working with my students on all of the great teaching strategies that I had learned in college to improve their reading skills..."
