Customers are afraid of the Bordeaux section because first, they figure it will be expensive, and second, they don’t understand what they are reading on the label. Have no fear. Simply put, a red Bordeaux wine is a wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France. It is the largest French wine producing area, composed of over 120,000 hectares of vineyards and producing over 700 million bottles of wine each year.

Nicolle Croft's insight:

There are small independent producers making great affordable wine in Bordeaux. Don't forget them, they are the ones in the shadow of the Grand Crus that are always in the bright limelight. The Small producers are the ral authentic wine producers of Bordeaux - with stained hands and soil on their shoes!

Did you know that you can get an excellent bottle of Bordeaux for less than 15 bucks? Most people associate Bordeaux wine with a high price tag, but the truth is the majority of wines produced in Bordeaux are not First Growths or Grand Crus. They are from small producers making affordable and accessible wines that pair with every occasion from a typical Tuesday night to Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanks Monique for your awesome job.

Graves doesn't have to be serious - The Morning Claret by Simon Woolf

There’s an unfortunate view, particularly prevalent in the UK, that Bordeaux wines fall into only two categories – those sold at super-premium prices for the obscenely rich, and those that are little more than execrable filth. The truth is that there are many examples offering great charm and outstanding value available in between these two poles.

I repeat the tasting now and again, and lately things have got decidedly better. The Bordelais, realising that drinkers today want riper styles, are putting out juicier, richer reds at the cheaper end, mainly by picking riper merlot grapes (merlot, not cabernet sauvignon, holds sway in the affordable, early-drinking claret blend)
