Internet Linguistics

OMG I can't even.

Tia Baheri on internet-speak and the way we can't even now.

"something interesting is happening linguistically. When the new grammatical structures and phrases express something that conventional language simply cannot. Sure, this new grammar-bending, punctuation-erasing, verb-into-noun-turning, key-board-smashing linguistic convention doesn’t dominate the whole Internet. While it is mostly Tumblr that generates this language, let’s remember that there are only virtual borders on the Internet. Users of one social media platform are likely to be users of several and they take the language with them across Internet borders. So language generated on Tumblr is is now becoming Facebook and Twitter language and influencing language everywhere from Buzzfeed to Autostraddle."

Why You Should Read More In 2014

Why You Should Read More In 2014 | Writing, Reading, and other Reads | Scoop.it

"Despite my good intentions, if it came down to Augie March or Netflix after a long, stressful day in the office, Netflix was going to win every time. Time to dial back the expectations -- I was easing back in, not starting a doctorate degree, right? I had more success with the Bridget Jones series, then The Hunger Games. So far, so good. Getting back into the habit of poring through the pages of a book rather than gazing at a screen was more daunting than I'd expected, but light, plot-driven tales coaxed me through." ... "here's my first resolution: Every day, for the entire year, I'm going to sit down with a book. Some days it may only be a few pages. Hopefully some days it will be a whole book (okay, a very short book)."

If you're going to make a resolution for 2014, this would be a good one.  My resolution last year was to read more short story collections - and I've enjoyed it so much, and discovered so many great writers (Ron Rash, T.C.Boyle, George Saunders, Claire Vaye Watkins among them) I think I'll make the same one all over again!

Let's Ban Weddings and, While We're at It, Baby Showers Too

Let's Ban Weddings and, While We're at It, Baby Showers Too | Writing, Reading, and other Reads | Scoop.it
Choose the man who will take care of the laundry and change the baby's diapers when you've got the flu, rather than the one who spent a month choreographing his proposal so that the video of it would go viral.

Other quotes from article:

"It makes me wonder what our world would look like if female accomplishments other than becoming a wife and mother were equally exalted. If we had First Job Showers, gifting briefcases and business suits, or Promotion Ceremonies, with hundreds of guests flying in to commemorate a woman's move to the C-suites. How about teen entrepreneur shows,"

and earlier:

"[of four sisters] For the three oldest girls, there were big, splashy baby showers with thousands of dollars in gifts. For the fourth, she was sent off to Santa Monica College (a vortex of collegiate Darwinism) with little fanfare and virtually no help. Where was her College Shower, to give her a laptop, a bookbag, sheets and towels, gift cards and cash and whatever else she might have needed to strike out on her own? Where was the whole family coming together to lionize her achievement, and set an example for younger ones of how you're revered when you further your education?"

The stories we internalize about our past eventually influence what we think about ourselves. We may not always be what or who we think we were, but our stories have a lot to do with how we move forward.

Mobile Commerce – What People Browse, Buy and Why? [INFOGRAPHIC] | Writing, Reading, and other Reads | Scoop.it

There had been several articles written linking mobile usage to e-commerce and why marketers need to not only optimize their campaigns to look good on mobile but actually put mobile and social at its center. In this article, we will explore more on the psychology as to how people use their mobile phones, what exactly are they browsing (compared to what they already do on the desktop) and what types of products and/or services they purchase through their phones.

The headline made me pause, but after reading part of it (am still reading) I see what they mean and yes it sounds good. But not on Facebook. Something similar perhaps, taking what works + better privacy controls + better have good security measures in place.

Not everyone would agree with this sentiment unless there was an absolute guarantee that your privacy could be protected. Medical information can be of a very sensitive nature and hence the appropriate security and privacy measures need to be in place.
