Lots and lots of lists, e.g., 50 books on Grief, 50 books on Peace and Social Justice. Lots of categories too.

Not an essential read ... or is it? Of course non-fiction should be used as mentor text. Reading requirements/skills change as students progress into and beyond secondary school. Strategies such as purpose of graph/photo captions, index, table of contents ... set up chapters/units ... implicit teaching and time for students to demonstrate learning are key.

"We nonfiction writers are considered…well…educational. Boring. Outside our tight quarters, the baying and shouting and enthusiasm goes to the fiction writers. But look at what has happened in the past few years.…"

CNF is for children and YA, too. We've seen many award winning narrative nonfiction books in the past few years.

Adding this makes Leslie happy. It demonstrates 'real' is popular, valid and worthwhile reading. For those who don't like 'stories' this is a sneaky way to get empathy engendering materials into their hands. We just have to find what the non-readers of fiction want to read.

Wow! Real stories for kids! What will they think of next?

I like Teacher Mentor Texts for the quick descriptions about the books and suggested uses in the class. While 'not news', this review has the idea of using a single book for multiple teachings/learnings across various grades.
