Upcoming Facebook Changes That Will Affect Indie Authors | Successful Self-Publishing

Upcoming Facebook Changes That Will Affect Indie Authors | Successful Self-Publishing | Book Promotion and Marketing | Scoop.it
According to Social Media maven Mari Smith, Facebook is about to make changes that will affect indie authors who use the social networking site to promote their books.
Penelope's insight:

I don't usually scoop on this day, but this was a true scooper!

Facebook is holding a press conference next Thursday apparently to unveil an all-new News Feed for both mobile and desktop. Maybe with filtered streams other than Top Stories or most recent? Possibly even a single column Timeline rollout. These include a Photos feed of Facebook and Instagram photos (Think: author photos and book cover photos). Cool!

Also, check out Facebook's "Graph Search". Click through to the article to find out how to get your Facebook author page "Graph Search ready". It is supposed to excite users with thousands of ways to search for things related to our interests and friends.

What could this mean for us authors? Instantaneous updates of our photos to mobile phones and desktops from our FB pages!

Robin Piggott's curator insight, March 8, 2013 6:01 AM

Going into a tailspin everytime Facebook or Google or any other major player announces changes is not going to help. You have to accept that change and rapid change at that, is part of life today in 2013.If you want to swim in the pond you had better get used to the temperature.

As you get older change gets more difficult or at least frustrating. There is so much to learn about life on the Web especially if you are about to launch your stuff on the Internet for the first time. Yes it will take time ...there is no such thing as an overnight success on the  the Web. Answer is... take a deep breath and get stuck in and just accept that you're probably way ahead of most others .Get going and take action, especially if you are a serial procrastinator!

Penelope's comment, March 8, 2013 9:01 PM
Very true Robin! We cannot be waiting with bated breath for every announcement from FB or Google. Just keep moving forward in whatever you know you're supposed to be doing! Great insight! ;)

Crowdfunding. Can it work for authors?

Penelope's insight:

Authors have typically fronted all the expenses to get their work out into the world. Now there is another choice.

Crowdfunding.

I'm going to take the plunge and have written the first of several blog posts leading up to the launch day of May 1. If you can put the time and effort into the promotion of your platform, you could raise up some decent funds to obtain some great editing, cover design, and promotion.

Penelope's insight:

Out-of-the-box ideas abound in Angela's article for finding our perfect readers.

#1 Fish for readers with a smaller net. You want a reader who actually likes your books.

Then answer this question: What makes my novel stand out from all others like it?

#2 Know the what. Understand your novel. Understand the what, then you know the who to look for.

Read on for unique ways to find your audience and cultivate the perfect author/reader relationship.
