Is Your Storytelling Smothering Your Customer Relationships?

"People buy your story."

Hearing that said from the stage at DemandCon 2011 by Forrester's Jeff Ernst made my withered writer's heart grow two sizes (to paraphrase Dr. Seuss). Covering the technology industry has made me an unwilling witness to a range of crimes against language, ranging from tortured grammar to made-up words to an impenetrable lexicon of jargon. All of these interfere with telling stories.

If people buy based on your story, why are you mucking up that story in the telling?

Watch the spectacular mating ritual of the dramatically colored male peacock spiders in south-east Australia

Watch the spectacular mating ritual of the dramatically colored male peacock spiders in south-east Australia | bonds | Scoop.it

These miniature arachnids are part of the Maratus genus of spiders that live in the south east of Australia. There are 20 known species of peacock spider but only eight have been formally identified. Peacock spiders are so small you could fit ten of them on a fingernail.

These dramatic-looking spiders may seem like they're getting ready to attack, but this colourful display from male peacock spiders is in fact a mating ritual. Similar to peacock birds, where this spider gets its nickname from, the male flashes its brightly coloured, iridescent stomach flaps in a bid to attract females. And even if these arachnids did attack, they wouldn't get far because the adults only grow to about 5 mm long.

Good Girl Deserves a Good Robot for Herself

Something about a pretty girl in the company of an imposing robot spoke very dearly to the hearts of readers and movie-goers of the Fifties' Space Era. Chrome was at the height of industrial fashion, and the curvy reflective plates of friendly (and not so friendly) robots played well against curvy shapes of the poster girls.

I planned to do this homage to the 50s style for some time, being partly inspired by illustrations from collectible science fiction pulp magazines, and partly by such sites as Fogonazos, or World of Kane with their own collections. So here is the first part of "Futuristic Ladies" post (the next one will feature space girls). Most images are promotional shots for the "Forbidden Planet" movie (1956) with Anne Francis, rare shots from various 60s TV series and, of course, art from vintage SF magazines.

Have the Rules of Dating and Mating Changed That Much? Part II | Attract and Seduce
