Raja Harishchandra- 1913- India's First Silent Film

Even though Pundalik was released a year before this movie, this movie gets the credit for being the first Indian film, because Pundalik was just a recording of a Marathi Indian play. The female roles in this film were played by males.

Amulya G's insight:

This movie was produced by Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913 and is considered to be the first Indian film.  Even though Dadasaheb Torne's Pundalik was released in 1912, it is not given the honor of being called the fist indian film because cameraman was a British national named Johnson and also because the film was sent to London to be processed.  This movie is based on a mythological story of King Harishchandra and what he did for his village.  I chose this information becuase it depicts the start of the Indian movie history.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Translated: Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sadness)

amitab getout srk from his house
Amulya G's insight:

This story revolves around a small, rich close-knit family that abides by culture and traditions.  It is tested to it's extent when the famlie's eldest and most beloved son, Rahul, falls in love and marries a common girl.  I chose to include a small clip from this movie because it demonstrates the influence that family and society have in Indian culture and what huge role they play in every aspect of our lives.  And it relates to my Scoop it research because like this movie displays the themes first started by the movie, Baiju Bawra.  And also, there are many movie that focus on similar themes.

Songs and Dance in Bollywood

Badtameez Dil Lyrics of the song...... Badtameezee ek bimari hai Ek aisi bimari Jo dheere dheere waqt ke saath Budhaape mein badal jaati hai Main kehta hoon ...
Amulya G's insight:

Songs from Indian movies are more commonly than not sung by professional singers and are pre-recorded before the filming of the movie and then lip synched by the actors.  The song is encorporated correctly into the movie during the editing process.

The songs in moives are often played while there is some  sort of dancing that takes place.  Generally in the dances, the main actors are on the foreground while the rest of the performers are in the background follwing the lead and usually the same dance movements of the main actors.

The video above, titled, Badtameez Dil from the movie, "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" is an example of one such song and that is the reason why I chose to include this in my research.

Bollywood Movie Fashion

Bollywood Movie Fashion | Bollywood Films | Scoop.it
Amulya G's insight:

Cultural clothing has a huge impact on Bollywood movie fashion. There are distinctive styles and ways of dressing based on what state you are from.  And this distinction is clearly seen in the movies that are directed in particular states.  Vibrant colors are used in abundance and this can be seen from the colorful clothes orchastrated by actors in several movies.  Also, heavy jewelry is big part of Indian movie fashion.  When one wears a saree or something more traditionally heavy, one employs more jewelry than just a simple kurthi as in the bottom right picture.  I chose to include this picture because I felt like it is releated to the whole of Bollywood.  The Indian clothes are major part of our cinema lifestyle and this picture depicts the most important styles.

Amulya G's insight:

This song was origianlly released in 2011 as part of the movie, "Ra. One" and was sung by Akon.  This is one of the most popular songs that the Indian population has been listening to all over the world for the past 3 years.  The lyrics of this song are mostly english and the hindi lyrics are mostly just fill in words.  This is not the case with only this song.  Most of the Bollywood songs today are majority english and hindi is just merely used as fill in.  And this is not only hindi songs, but it is the same idea that is continuing with several other langua moives in Indian film industry.   This yet again, shows the Hollywood and diverse cultural influence ruling the Indian movie industry.

Amulya G's insight:

As much as there is a huge western influence in Indian films, there is also an equal influence of indian actors, tradition and music in western films.  In this movie, the ending song: "I Believe in Love (Evil Queen Mix)" has the classic up beat Indian song background with english lyrics.   This upbeat song also makes everything seem final and that there is finally a happy ending.  Not only this, but even the dancing is similar to the dances in many Indian films.  It has the main actor in the front or the center of the group and the rest of the crew behind and around them following the main actor's lead.  I chose to include this song because it shows the influence of Bollywood music in the western world.

Baiju Bawra

Baiju Bawra | Bollywood Films | Scoop.it
Amulya G's insight:

This movie, Baiju Bawra, was directed by Vijay Bhatt and was released in 1952 during the golden age of Hindi films.  This movie began the style of the starcrossed lovers that is now associated with Bollywood moives.  It contains the themes of revenge, murder, and death with a mix of music that gives a musical and flowing allure to the film.  I included this movie in my research because it shows the start point or rather it is the first movie that can labled the "classic bollywood movie."  In other words, this is where the theme for most of bollywood movies started.

3 Idiots - Zoobi Doobi. Singers: Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal

Song - Zoobi Doobi Movie - 3 Idiots Singer - Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal Lyricist - Swanand Kirkire Music - Shantanu Moitra Artist - Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoo...
Amulya G's insight:

This song: Zoobi Doobi from the movie 3 Idiots was sung by two of the most popular singers: Shreya Ghoshal and Sony Nigam of Indian films.  This movie is yet another example of how pre recorded songs sung by professional play back singers are used in movies.

This movie, released in 2011 was a breath of fresh air that was highly needed for Bollywood films.  Up until this point, most of the movies were classic love story films consisting of love, conflict between the couple's families or some revenge mystery.  Although the conflict between couple's loved ones still existed, the film also address another very important aspects of society.  The film is about education and how limited the children's decision is when choosing which career is best for them.  The parents have the majority of the say and the kids usually follow through and this movie encourages children to pave their own way into greatness and teaches them to be brave to stand up to their families regarding things that matter.  This movie was the biggest blockbuster in the Bollywood film Industry and it broke all opening box office credits in India up until that point.  I chose to include the song from this movie, because it was sung by two of the most famous singers today.  Also, I chose this movie because it created a new trend of filming for Bollywood films.

Amulya G's insight:

This movie is good choice to include in this Scoop.it topic because it can be seen as an excellent example of Hollywood's influence on bollywood directors and movies.  This movie, titled "Dil Bole Hadippa" is a film based on Andy Fickman's "She's The Man."  The actress, Rani, is a traditional and ambitious Indian country girl who aspires to be a cricketer in the Nation Cricket games.  The actor, Shahid is a Indian/English cricketer who comes to India to help his father lead the national cricket team.  Being that cricket is a male sport played only by male members of the society with strict rules on who would be on the team, Rani decides to dress up as a boy to be on the team.

Brad Pitt ''I'd love to do a Bollywood film''

Brad Pitt ''I'd love to do a Bollywood film'' | Bollywood Films | Scoop.it

Brad Pitt has revealed he would love to do a Bollywood film some day and even could be persuaded to do one of the big dance numbers...  a sight worth seeing?

Pitt has been to India before to work as a producer on his wifes' Angelina Jolie film Mighty Heart which was filmed on location mostly in Mumbai. The actor also spoke about a missed opportunity to work with Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachan in Troy which she turned down.

'Given a chance, I would like to work with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, because she's a versatile actor,' Pitt said. 'She is one of the most popular actresses of Bollywood, who has achieved huge acclaim in the west for her style, beauty and acting skills. I think we missed an opportunity to be cast together for Troy'.

To date, Aishwarya's only Hollywood credit was in Dino de Laurentis' 'The Last Legion' which tanked at the box office....

Amulya G's insight:

Bollywood films are leaving India to join and share its culture in the west.  Many western actors are casted in bollywood films and vice versa.  The classic Indian dances and outfilts are becoming a trend even all the way across the seas in places like the US, France, and UK.  Actors all across the world are more interested to be cast or starr in Indian movies. I chose to add this link because this demonstrates the influence of Bollywood movies in the west.  I have given examples of a song and movie above but this link shows the willingness and eagerness of western actors to take part in the Indian culture.  And this is new because it was never as obvious before.
