How To Prepare And Eat Acorns

How To Prepare And Eat Acorns | BOB to BOL by BOV | Scoop.it
Acorns are extremely nutritious and readily available to most of us, making them a healthful and convenient addition to many recipes.

Note: Acorns do contain a bitter organic substance called tannin that must be leached out before eating. With a little patience, tannin is easily removed.

Vivalist's insight:

It requires lots of water and boiling to remove tannin so not to be considered if those are scarce or if in a hurry

This Back Pack Could Power Your Laptop For A Couple of Months

This Back Pack Could Power Your Laptop For A Couple of Months | BOB to BOL by BOV | Scoop.it
Unlike a conventional battery that contains both cathode and anode material, oxygen from the atmosphere is one of the battery reactants and is not packaged within the battery.  So a cell can contain more zinc fuel in the anode to provide more capacity, or run time, than a conventional battery.  As a result, the MetAir® Ranger PPS has higher energy capacity-to-volume (and weight) ratio than any other commercially available battery.
Vivalist's insight:

interesting battery tech. 400$ MetAir Ranger Battery for 192hours. Not clear if you can buy "power cartridge" to change cells within the battery though.

More info from the FAQ:

MetAir® Cells Zinc-air primary batteries offer a long stable shelf life, generally up to three years (before initial use, sealed in the original airtight packaging). Once activated (exposed to air), the MetAir® battery should be completely utilized within three months.

if properly re-sealed to cut-off the air supply, you can slow the discharge rate and re-use the battery again for up to two months, depending on remaining energy capacity.

Zinc-air batteries are safe, eco-friendly, non-toxic, and nonflammable. MetAir cells contain zinc in the anode gel, a non-combustible, non-toxic material. The MetAir batteries contain NO added mercury, lead, lithium, or cadmium.

They are primary (non-rechargeable) cells which can be conveniently used and replaced. Once discharged (completely utilized), the MetAir® Power Cartridge is replaceable and can be disposed of in the normal waste stream

This portable solar charger is big enough to be your emergency home power source

This portable solar charger is big enough to be your emergency home power source | BOB to BOL by BOV | Scoop.it
For solar charging, the company is offering its 50 W Predator solar panels, which weigh in at about 4 pounds and are said to be both waterproof and shatterproof, and which are designed to be able to be chained together (up to 5) to charge the Kodiak. Two of the panels should deliver a full charge to the Kodiak in about 11 hours, according to Inergy, and this time can be cut further by adding additional panels to the system
Vivalist's insight:

yet another example of affordable and compact solar solutions that can deliver decent power. However, lithium-ion batteries recycling should be addressed and optimised so we don't just switch from one fuel issue to another (from Middle East to South America) and don't rely solely on environmental regulations and goodwill to boost recycling effort.

This needs to be profitable and beneficial.

Are we kidding ourselves with our Bug Out Bags?

Are we kidding ourselves with our Bug Out Bags? | BOB to BOL by BOV | Scoop.it

We often use a backpack, as our BOB, because we know that our car, truck, SUV, ATV, motorcycle, or scooter, may not run (EMP), or stop running (no fuel, mechanical breakdown, or collision).

A Bug Out Bicycle overcomes the EMP and fuel obstacles, and would be great if you're leaving from your house, but how many people can carry a bike, even a folding bike (plus spare parts, tires, tubes, chains, cables, and tools) in their car, everywhere they go?

If we REALLY want to prepare for the "worst case scenario" (plan Z), what we all need to prepare for, is walking.

Vivalist's insight:

A pretty good account at possibilities in terms of Bug Out Trailers

Sailing with Google Earth for Navigation - Google Earth Blog

Sailing with Google Earth for Navigation - Google Earth Blog | BOB to BOL by BOV | Scoop.it

I wanted to test the ability to use Google Earth as a navigational tool while under sail. I brought the following tools:

Windows Laptop – some of the tools I used were only available for Windows.Google Earth – just the basic free versionGPS – used a Garmin 60Cx – a nicely featured GPS with color screen and charts. But, a basic Garmin GPS with a serial or USB port would have worked just as well.EarthNC – EarthNC offers very nicely converted digital vector nautical charts for Google Earth (KML format) from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) – over 600 charts. The EarthNC charts take very good advantage of advanced KML features to present colorful information for the charts (depth contours, buoys, hazrds, etc.) in an eye-pleasing and informative fashion in Google Earth. See my earlier review of EarthNC.GooPs – GooPs provides tools for linking your GPS with Google Earth and drives your view in GE so you can use it for navigation. Even the Pro version only costs US$14.95Franson’s GPSGate – I needed this in order to allow GooPs to think I had my GPS hooked up by serial port instead of the USB. I’m told GooPs will soon have its own ability to handle USB GPS interfaces. I used the 14-day trial version for GPSGate for my review. It worked perfectly.

Simple Pine Branches Can Filter Out 99% of Bacteria Producing Clean Water

Simple Pine Branches Can Filter Out 99% of Bacteria Producing Clean Water | BOB to BOL by BOV | Scoop.it

If you’ve run out of drinking water during a lakeside camping trip, there’s a simple solution: Break off a branch from the nearest pine tree, peel away the bark, and slowly pour lake water through the stick. The improvised filter should trap any bacteria, producing fresh, uncontaminated water. In fact, an MIT team has discovered that this low-tech filtration system can produce up to four liters of drinking water a day — enough to quench the thirst of a typical person

Vivalist's insight:

We did not wait the MIT to test & approve this technique, but it might help spread the word. You shouln't be in a hurry though, it's takes for ever to go through.
