Our brains require stimulation and connection to survive and thrive. A brain without connection to other brains and without sufficient challenge will shrink and eventually die—moreover, the modern human brain’s primary environment is our matrix of social relationships.

Make the connection - tune  the kids into how their brain works

Edgar Mata's curator insight, November 16, 2015 8:20 PM

Physical activity exerts a stimulating influence on the entire brain that keeps it functioning at an optimal level. Exercise has been shown to stimulate the birth of new neurons in the hippocampus and to pump more oxygen through the brain, stimulating capillary growth and frontal-lobe plasticity.

Are Learning Styles Useful?

Are Learning Styles Useful? | Blooms Taxonomy in EFL classroom | Scoop.it
Every teacher already knows that each student learn differently from his or her peers. In the last couple of decades a theory emerged that a few key learning styles could explain and define some of those differences in how children learn.

Laura Montenegro's curator insight, October 10, 2016 11:40 PM
As years pass, everyday we see different inventions, theories, devices, etc. That some years ago people said they were never going to exist, and there they are. That is why we should be open minded in order to understand its implications. With this comes the learning styles theroy, which can bring plenty of benefits but also some negatives aspects. When taking in consideration learning styles it is important to find a balance between what they offer and what we need as teachers. Also it is essential to see this as a way of inspiration and not as the total answer of the lessons. Sometimes when we categorize something we tend to limite it, and that is just what we do not want to happen in the learning process, so we should pay special attention to work and design tasks which work with different part of the mind for then accomplish any single "style" or "type" that is in the classroom.

A nice article with some important principles for Socratic seminar. One of them, "Avoid doing all the work for them," is a key component to any seminar experience. This often takes the form of "gradual release of responsibility," since students need to be taught skills first before they get a chance to practice.
