Former Miami banker and lawyer caught 26 years after convictions for drug smuggling and money laundering

Former Miami banker and lawyer caught 26 years after convictions for drug smuggling and money laundering | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

A former banker and Miami attorney who's been on the run for more than 26 years after he was convicted of drug smuggling and money laundering has been caught in Mexico, authorities said Thursday.

Manuel Lopez-Castro, 61, was arrested Tuesday during a coordinated traffic stop by Mexican authorities in Cancun, according to the U.S. Marshals.

Authorities say Lopez-Castro and five other co-defendants were indicted in 1984, charged with operating a large-scale marijuana smuggling operation beginning in 1977.

The group imported and distributed as much as 600,000 pounds of marijuana, laundered the proceeds and profits and invested the money through foreign and domestic corporations, according to the U.S. Marshals.

Lopez-Castro, who worked as an attorney for Sunshine State Bank in Miami, laundered large sums of cash through the bank to defeat federal laws regarding reporting currency transactions above $10,000, U.S. Marshals said.

He was arrested in 1984 and released on $250,000 bond. During his trial, Lopez-Castro was convicted of marijuana smuggling, money laundering, and obstruction of justice and was sentenced to 27 years behind bars.

He was supposed to surrender at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee on Jan. 28, 1986, to begin serving his sentence but he never showed up...

Miami-Dade detective stabbed by serial rapist "slowly recovering"

Miami-Dade detective stabbed by serial rapist "slowly recovering" | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

GRAPEVINE, TX - The girlfriend of a Miami-Dade County detective who was stabbed by a convicted felon says Officer Jaime Pardinas, 54, is getting better by the day.

Marinka Stuvel spoke to reporters on Monday morning from a hotel in Grapevine, Texas. She arrived there last week after getting word that Pardinas had been stabbed by Alberto Morales, a convicted sex offender he was transporting to Las Vegas with another officer.

Pardinas was released from the hospital on Saturday. Stuvel told reporters he is slowly recovering, mentioning that he has been eating, talking and cracking jokes.   According to Stuvel, Pardinas’ spirits were lifted when he learned that the search for Morales was over. He was caught and killed on Friday night, after several days on the run.

Originally, there were reports that Pardinas would speak to the media at Monday’s news conference, but Stuvel said that he will continue to focus on his recovery before he speaks. She says he will not be making any statement while he is in Texas, but did not rule out a future meeting with media once he returns to Miami...

Professional stunt driver dons short shorts, cutoff shirt during DUI rampage in Central Florida (VIDEO)

Professional stunt driver dons short shorts, cutoff shirt during DUI rampage in Central Florida (VIDEO) | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

ORLANDO, Fla. — Investigators said a professional stunt car driver left a path of destruction while driving under the influence of alcohol through downtown Orlando early Wednesday morning.

No one was inside the three damaged vehicles at the time of the crash, authorities said.

Grady Bishop, 51, was given a field sobriety test on South Orange Avenue, and officials said his blood-alcohol level was over twice the legal limit.

WFTV learned Bishop owns Extreme Stunts, a company that's done extensive work with motion pictures. His impressive movie resume includes "Fast and The Furious" and work for Disney's “Lights, Motors, Action.”

Bishop was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

Dressed in the same short shorts and cutoff T-shirt he was booked into jail wearing, Channel 9 was there when Bishop posted his $1,300 bond.

When asked what happened, Bishop said, “I don't know. I really don't.”

The crash caused about $10,000 in damage, officials said...

Miami Named 2nd Worst-Run City in America; Hialeah 5th

Miami Named 2nd Worst-Run City in America; Hialeah 5th | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

The rankings come from 247WallSt.com which used a number of factors to determine the list. Gross metropolitan product, public debt, unemployment rates, violent crime, poverty, home prices, the number of insured people, graduation rates, credit ratings and foreclosures were all considered.

So maybe it's not much of a surprise Miami came in as the second worst run city, while Hialeah was the fifth. Though, it's a slight improvement from last year when Miami took the number one spot.

And here's the take on second place Miami:

2. Miami, Fla.
> Population: 408,760
> Credit rating: A2, negative outlook
> Violent crime per 1,000 people: 11.98 (12th highest)
> Unemployment rate: 12.4% (17th highest)

Between 2007 and 2011, the median home value in Miami fell by 43.5%. Additionally, the city had one of the nation's lowest median household incomes, at under $29,000, while 31% of residents lived below the poverty line -- nearly twice the U.S. rate of 15.9%. Despite the difficult economic conditions Miamians faced, the city joined with Miami-Dade County to pay for almost 80% of the more-than $600 million cost of building a new baseball stadium for the Miami Marlins. The deal has caused significant uproar. While taxpayers pay extremely high costs to service the stadium debt, the team has traded many of its top players. In 2011, the SEC launched an investigation into the agreement.

San Bernardino, California, beat out Miami for the top (or bottom, depending on how you look at it) spot. Detroit and Stockton, California, rounded out the top five. Orlando also came in 10th.

Florida Wife Finds Husband With Another Woman, Poops On Floor In Retaliation

Florida Wife Finds Husband With Another Woman, Poops On Floor In Retaliation | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

Police say Brenda Schumann, 51, defecated and urinated on the floor, then went on an armed rampage through the house after discovering her husband in bed with another woman, according to a case report obtained by TC Palm.

Schumann allegedly stormed into the bedroom other Vero Beach, Fla. home at about 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 21, carrying a rifle and threatening to kill both her 42-year-old husband and his lover. After her husband managed to get the gun away from her he says she urinated on the carpet outside the bedroom before dropping a deuce on the kitchen floor.

She allegedly found a second rifle and began to destroy items around the house, include mirrors, pictures and Christmas decorations. It's unclear whether she was employing the rifle in the destruction. Her husband told deputies that she eventually left the house and drove away, leaving the weapon behind.

She was charged with aggravated assault/domestic violence, aggravated assault, battery and resisting arrest without violence...
