FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The School Board of Broward County votes to suspend a teacher accused of calling a student "dark chocolate, the kind that nobody wants."

The board voted unanimously to suspend Leslie Rainer five days without pay.

According to an administrative complaint, the Blanche Ely High School teacher pointed in a Haitian student's face and said, "Look, little chocolate boy."

Rainer also told the student that he "was dark chocolate, the kind that nobody wants," and told the student to "shut up."

The student recorded Rainer on video pointing the pointer at him and making the statement, "You got one time, chocolate," before his classmates erupted in laughter.

Rainer said she was referring to actual pieces of chocolate on her desk that she hands out as treats during class...

Sole survivor of marijuana grow house shootout says Miami-Dade Police didn't identify themselves (VIDEO)

Sole survivor of marijuana grow house shootout says Miami-Dade Police didn't identify themselves (VIDEO) | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

The only person believed to have survived a raging inferno and shootout with police walked out of the Miami-Dade County Jail Friday night with scrapes and scratches on his head.

Brian Howell then started talking – recounting the ordeal that unfolded at his West Kendall home three nights ago.

“They didn’t say they were the police, and it didn't say police on the front of their thing, and they just pulled us out,” said Howell, 29. “I think my brother thought it was a home invasion. I think he thought he was just protecting the house.”

Miami-Dade Police raided it, suspecting to be a marijuana grow house. As they approached on Tuesday night, investigators said, somebody inside the house started shooting at them.

Police fired back, a shootout ensued, and the home went up in flames.

Howell acknowledged to NBC 6 that marijuana was being grown inside.

“I lived in the house but that was all my stepdad’s, that was all his thing, I didn’t have anything to do with it,” Howell said, referring to the grow equipment...

Florida Attorney General wants to exhume bodies from dozens of mysterious graves at Dozier School for Boys

Florida Attorney General wants to exhume bodies from dozens of mysterious graves at Dozier School for Boys | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

Attorney General Pam Bondi's office filed a petition to get a court order for exhumation of human remains on the site of the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna. The site of "Boot Hill Cemetery" and surrounding areas is believed to have many unmarked graves of students at Dozier who died between 1900 and 1952.

The petition was signed on behalf of Dr. Michael Hunter, the appointed Medical Examiner for the Fourteenth District of Florida. Bondi said she would do anything in her power to support the investigation of the unexplained deaths and "bring closure to the families who lost loved ones."

"The deaths that occurred at Dozier School for Boys in Marianna are cloaked in mystery, and the surviving family members deserve a thorough examination of the site," Bondi said.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement and University of South Florida researchers found dozens of graves with students' remains on the school property. USF researchers said there would be more...

Fired Florida deputy gets his job back, storms retired deputy's house, violating his constitutional rights (VIDEO)

Fired Florida deputy gets his job back, storms retired deputy's house, violating his constitutional rights (VIDEO) | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

Clearwater, Florida -- He carries a badge and a gun, and was fired more than five years ago for misconduct. Now there are allegations the same deputy is abusing his authority once again.

Deputy Patrick Milkewsky, who got his job back, said he had a protective injunction issued from the court for a domestic between a stepdaughter and her mother. He is accused of bull-rushing into the husband's house without having a search warrant -- and the victim just happens to be a retired Pinellas County deputy.

Deputy Dan Grainger says of Milkewsky, "No, he shouldn't be having this job. The fact that he got his job back from his prior incident is amazing."

Milkewsky was fired from his job as a Pinellas deputy more than five years ago, after being found guilty of violating standards of conduct, his conduct toward the public, and lack of truthfulness.

Grainger says, "I would like to see him fired again."

Florida gun dealers outnumber post offices 3 to 1, nationwide there are 4x as many gun dealers than McDonald's

Florida gun dealers outnumber post offices 3 to 1, nationwide there are 4x as many gun dealers than McDonald's | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

How overwhelming is Florida's gun culture? A study by Mayors Against Gun Violence reveals that Florida has 3.2 times as many federally licensed gun dealerships as post offices.

In fact, the group reports, 99.3 percent of Sunshine State residents live within 10 miles of a firearms dealer, which they say disproves the gun lobby's claims that background checks would be a burden for private gun sellers.

The statistics are also alarming in light of a review by Harvard University's Injury Control Research Center that found "a broad array of evidence" indicates that where there are more guns, there is more homicide. The Atlantic reports that 9,151 Floridians died by gun between 2007 and 2010, behind only California and Texas.

Despite all the violence, legislators in Tallahassee pushed through a 2011 law thatprevents local and municipal governments from enforcing firearms laws stricter than the state's, and in July reduced application and renewal fees for concealed carry permits. Florida became the fastest state to reach one million concealed carry permitsin December.

Nationwide, there 58,344 federally licensed gun dealers in the United States, according to the mayors group, which is nearly four times the number of McDonald’s...

Former Florida model pleads guilty to running multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme (VIDEO)

Former Florida model pleads guilty to running multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme (VIDEO) | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

ORLANDO, Fla. - She’s a former model and a single mother who had successfully started a construction and design business from scratch. Within a few years she was landing jobs with some of the biggest companies in Central Florida.

She drove high-end cars and lived in a luxurious high-rise condominium in downtown Orlando. Her daughter was able to attend private schools.

Her success was due in part to her investors who would generously help her secure bid bonds for multi-million dollar projects. In return for their generosity, when she secured the project she would pay them back handsomely. The return on their loan would come back double and sometimes even higher.

The truth is, Tina Louise Mangiardi, the one-time President of TLM Design and Construction, Inc. could be spending years in federal prison. Mangiardi pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and wire fraud in a plea arrangement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Florida.

In total, federal investigators said they have heard from at least 40 victims of the scheme who were sold on the pitch that she needed bid-bond money to secure projects with Disney, Darden and most recently Florida Hospital.

Representatives at Disney and Florida Hospital said they never heard of Mangiardi. Darden Restaurants said TLM did a small remodeling job for them on a support facility back in 2009, but has never bid on a contract big enough to require bond money upfront...

Miami-Dade Police Find 8 Pot Plants in West Kendall Home After Turning Neighborhood Into War Zone (VIDEO) | BloodandButter | Scoop.it

Eight damaged marijuana plants were found in the West Kendall grow house that was the scene of an officer involved shootout with a trio of suspects that ended with the home on fire and a massive manhunt, police said Thursday.

The news comes as one of the suspects, 29-year-old Brian Kelly Howell, was charged with possession of a place to manufacture a controlled substance in the incident that began Tuesday night at the home in the 15400 block of Southwest 57th Street, according to a Miami-Dade Police arrest affidavit.

One of the other suspects, 50-year-old Dell Peter DiGiovanni, was found dead of an apparent suicide in the area of Southwest 48th Terrace and Southwest 147th Place Wednesday.

The third suspect, 28-year-old Michael Steven DiGiovanni may still be at large, though police have yet to identify a burned body that was found in the house early Wednesday.

The incident began around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday when detectives conducting a narcotics investigation approached the home and came under fire from the suspects, police said.
