How to translate a warm welcome into Hindi
Is translation an act of surrender or a non-violent Darwinian struggle?
Written by Pratik Kanjilal | Published:October 23, 2016 12:09 am
Deciding to translate is a refusal to surrender.
These are exciting times for editors of literary publications. While the uproar over the outing of bestselling Neapolitan author Elena Ferrante in the pages of Robert Silvers’ New York Review of Books is yet to die down, the byline of prime suspect Anita Raja has appeared in the fall issue of Lee Yew Leong’s Asymptote, a journal of world literature published from Singapore. A note from Leong clarifies that Raja’s essay, ‘Translation as a Practice of Acceptance’, was in the bag before Italian journalist Claudio Gatti’s article on Ferrante’s secret identity appeared in the NYRB. The man has the luck of the devil himself.
Interpreting vocabulary and idiom forces the translator to confront cultural questions embedded in language, which are often invisible — or negligible — to the monolingual author. Raja illustrates these, drawing on issues raised in translating Christa Wolf, Ingeborg Bachmann and Georg Büchner. Curiously, the essay does not refer at all to Raja’s compatriot, fellow translator and semiotician Umberto Eco, though it will strongly remind readers of his 2003 book Mouse or Rat, where he defined literary translation as a process of negotiation in which author and translator, the original tongue and the idiom of the target language, are locked in a never-ending struggle to be heard.
This is not plagiarism, of course, since intelligent translators generally come to the same inescapable conclusions about their craft, and agree to disagree only on instrumentalities. Besides, Raja frames the matter differently. While Eco painted the relationship between writer and translator like a non-violent Darwinian struggle, Raja sees it as an act of accession, when translating “a great writer with a great linguistic capacity”. This is not frictionless capitulation, though, for she also writes, “The text of the other jostles the language of the translator.”

But capitulation follows as “the translator submits to the authority and wonder of the original text, and offers her own language with love, with passion, with admiration, and even with devotion. If these conditions are fulfilled, then to translate is to position oneself to accept a tightly structured text, to surrender, word after word and sentence after sentence, to the text’s needs, to compel one’s own more modest linguistic capacity to grow and rise to the level of the original.” If this is indeed Elena Ferrante, she is able to keep her personas of translator and author apart with schizophrenic efficiency.
She continues: “Accepting this inequality is not an act of surrender. On the contrary, deciding to translate is a refusal to surrender. The translator knows her own limits and yet, out of devotion, out of love, she is prepared to challenge them — or at least she chooses to try.”
Raja’s article would be of particular interest to South Asian translators, since it raises signalling issues which we grapple with when translating into English. In the British Isles, warm is nice and cold quite miserable. That is why welcomes are described as ‘warm’ and deteriorating relations as ‘frosty’ in English. In the sensibility of most of India, which can be beastly hot for almost the whole year, ‘warm’ sounds minatory, almost as bad as the death sentence, and people travel vast distances in summer to holiday in the Alps. Translating idioms referring to the temperature is therefore problematic. Such issues used to engage bilingual Indian writers who had adopted English, like Kamala Das, too.
Raja also refers to the gender politics embedded in language. For instance, the German das Elternhaus — the parental home, etymologically, ‘elders’ home’ — becomes la casa paterna in Italian. Stepping over the borders of language, the father figure enters the picture. India offers an interesting variation on the theme. It has been noted that states whose mother tongue does not feature grammatical gender tend to have lower rates of discrimination and crime against women. Convincing data to establish the truth value of this premise is awaited, but translators cannot help but note that the articulation of gender politics is slightly different in these languages.
But since we are only human, while reading Raja’s essay, you can’t help searching obsessively for the signature of Elena Ferrante. And then you encounter passages like this: “By translating Christa Wolf I discovered that the work of translation can challenge the very limits of language. It was therefore particularly exhilarating work because it acted upon my poorer, more common labour of finding words, leading me along paths that I never would have dared to take on my own.” If this is the public identity of Elena Ferrante, Raja deserves an Oscar for dissimulation.

The Evolution of Marketing in Elections - Marketo

The Evolution of Marketing in Elections - Marketo | James Jasper | Scoop.it
As the primaries heat up, politicians are leveraging digital marketing and social media to capture the hearts (and votes) of U.S. voters. Having a strong digital presence is now table stakes for political candidates. Whether 50 years ago or today, there are 3 things successful political campaigns have been able to learn from marketers: be targeted, be efficient, and be clear with your message across all channels or be lost in the cacophony of the elections. So, let’s take a look at how political candidates, over time, have adapted to incorporate digital marketing into their campaigns to effectively communicate their message. When Digital Marketing Meets Politics What does this look like in practice? Let’s answer that question by taking a look at how political candidates have structured and used their websites and how that has evolved to mirror marketing best practices. Then, we’ll look at how candidates have adapted their strategies to take their message to social media platforms. The Website In 1996, just five years after the first website was built, Bill Clinton and Al Gore took advantage of the web to promote their campaign. These running-mates launched their own site, which is still up today, stating their tagline and offering additional resources. At the time, presidential campaigns had little insight into who would come to their website. With no data to back up their actions and no measures to test by, their website laid out everything—from debate information to biographies to downloadable bumper stickers—in hard-to-navigate columns. By the 2000 and 2004 elections, websites were much more robust with new modules, calendars, newsletters, and lots of content. While these new capabilities were great and candidates seemed to embrace them, the sites suffered from looking cluttered and lacked a clear call-to-action. In the two examples below from the Bush/Cheney website in 2000 and then again in 2004, you can see the evolution of call-to-action and site organization. A marked departure from the clutter of the earlier websites, Barack Obama’s 2007 website harnessed the power of a clear message and call-to-action. Taking a page from the marketing playbook, instead of overwhelming his readers with more information, he created a clear message and call-to-action (join the team), with a more organized display for additional information. Overall, you can see a drastic shift in the site design to be less cluttered and provide clear visuals.  In fact, Obama’s website was launched by Chris Hughes, one of the co-founders of Facebook, who created it with the intention of being a networking site where volunteers could create groups, plan events, raise funds, and connect with each other. Look how far it’s come today: Digital Marketing is a Cornerstone for the Modern Campaign Not only did website capabilities advance as time progressed, but so did the different web properties to help candidates reach a broader audience—namely social media. The 2008 campaign year was an unprecedented turning point in which candidates embraced social media. This was especially true of the Obama campaign, which harnessed the power of social media and digital marketing to connect with his supporters on a new level. As Arianna Huffington, editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post said, “Were it not for the Internet, Barack Obama would not be president. Were it not for the Internet, Barack Obama would not have been the nominee.” Obama also leveraged YouTube like never before. The campaign’s official channel was collectively watched for 14.5 million hours, as reported by political consultant Joe Trippi. And from Obama’s success, a lesson emerged that political candidates from any party, running for any office (from local mayor all the way to president), will not soon forget—candidates need to be everywhere their audiences are if they want their message to reach beyond their base of voters. As for the current presidential candidates, almost all of the candidate sites today echo a similar format: clear message, clear call-to-action, neat navigation, and a giant email signup (plus links to social media sites). The emphasis on digital spending, social media, and other online paid ads is only going to increase as the election gets closer. Already, some candidates are changing their strategy to focus their spending specifically on digital marketing channels. Consider how presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has mixed traditional avenue with digital. She spent early on and often on traditional methods—$12 million on television, $6 million on direct mail, and set aside about $6 million for digital advertising. She has leveraged the most diverse and unique channels to interact with her followers: Instagram, Pinterest, Periscope, Snapchat, even a Spotify list with Clinton’s curated music including Katy Perry and JLo. Does listening to Clinton’s playlist sway more people to vote for her? I don’t think so, but it’s just one piece of the cross-channel puzzle. In fact, on hillaryclinton.com she has 14 or so webtrackers, including Optimizely, Facebook Custom Audiences, and Google Adwords. In contrast, Donald Trump has only 3 (Facebook Custom Audience, Google Analytics and Google Dynamic Remarketing). However, Trump hasn’t turned his back on digital marketing and social media. His website, like the other candidates, is simple above the fold and then below it invites visitors to sign up for SMS alerts, watch his YouTube videos, and participate with the campaign on social media. Trump Website: Above the fold Trump Website: Below the fold Among his Republican candidate primary competition, Trump seems to be using social media most effectively, although he is arguably one of the loudest (albeit THE most controversial) social media contributors. Which makes sense: small statements can travel far at the speed of light with social media. Stats released by Twitter after a GOP debate Take a look at another candidate, Bernie Sanders. He has spent more money than any other politician before on digital marketing: a whopping $10 million, while he has spent minimal funds on traditional avenues such as television and direct mail (Bush spent $35 million on television ads alone). Digital marketing has been at the heart of his marketing strategy, and that appears to have started to pay off with the target demographic of the millennial generation. After the Feb. 1 Iowa caucus, some 84% of voters ages 18-29 voted for Sanders. While millennials are an incredibly loyal generation, they also see through political pomp and want nothing to do with political campaigns from the past. Being able to interact with candidates on their own terms, on their own channels, is incredibly important to them. It won’t be surprising to see the rest of the presidential candidates start to pay more attention to digital marketing channels as the need to appeal to different, segmented groups grows more pressing. One thing’s for sure, while smart political campaigns are certainly applying marketing best practices—targeted and clear messages—undoubtedly, they could get even more personal and create more tailored message to followers that care about certain issues more than others. Do you think having more curated and personalized content from your representatives would be helpful? Let me know in the comments section below.

How to Market Your Small Business Effectively in 2016

How to Market Your Small Business Effectively in 2016 | James Jasper | Scoop.it
Marketing your business effectively has never been an easy task, but in 2016, things are seemingly more difficult than ever before. Not only are there increasing amounts of competition in almost every industry, but also there are also more ways than ever before to market your business. There’s SEO, social media, online paid advertising (e.g. PPC), direct marketing, word-of-mouth, traditional print advertising; the list goes on. With each of these industries constantly trying to convince you that their marketing “solution” is the answer you’ve been looking for, things can often seem somewhat complicated (even to experienced business owners). What’s more, it’s easy to get “sucked in” by the latest marketing trend(s) and unfortunately; this can often result in money down the drain. In this post, my aim isn’t to introduce you to the latest, greatest marketing trend of 2016; the aim is simply to give advice as to how you can effectively market your small business (on a relatively small budget) in 2016. Many of the techniques I mention in this post might not seem particularly glamorous or “trendy”, but I can assure you, they work well. First Things First: You Need A Website (and a good one, too) Many of you might find it hard to believe, but many small businesses still don’t have a website (or any web presence at all, for that matter). If you’re running one of these businesses, I’m afraid I’m going to have to break this to you: you need a website. It doesn’t matter if you’re selling direct to consumers and B2B, your website should act as a “hub” for which all other marketing tactics derive from. It’s highly likely that should your potential customers/clients receive a business card/flyer/leaflet/cold call from you, they’re going to seek more information about your company online before they decide whether or not to give you their custom. If you do already have a website, there’s another big thing you need to consider: your website needs to actually be good. Source Many small businesses are still using websites that were built in the early 2000’s, and quite honestly, they often look terrible (see above). The cost of creating a website has fallen dramatically over the years, so there really is no excuse for any small business not to have a decent website in 2016. Recommended for You Webcast: Agile Marketing: Pour Gas on Your Growth Fire You can use sites like SquareSpace (pictured above), Wix, or even an open-source solution like WordPress to create a great website without falling into bankruptcy. Note: If your technical knowledge is limited and website design/customisation is something you struggle with, you can hire a freelancer on sites such as PeoplePerHour.com, Elance or Odesk relatively cheaply. Invest in “Traditional” Online Marketing Tactics (e.g. SEO, PPC, etc.) Many small businesses make the mistake of creating a great website, but then completely neglect the marketing side of things. It’s important to remember that without targeted traffic, your website is essentially worthless. You need traffic in order to attract custom and gain sales for your business. Now, there are a lot of online marketing tactics out there, and it can often seem that there’s something new to “get involved in” every few months (e.g. Snapchat, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.) Source What’s more, when something new does come along, you’ll often notice that articles/guides get published (like the one above) with the aim of attracting your attention to these new-fangled marketing ideas. While these articles do often offer some good advice, the problem is that they tend to detract your attention from the things that really matter, in pursuit of a sort of “marketing golden ticket”. This is known in the business world as “shiny object syndrome” (see a full explanation here). It’s for this reason that you should stick to tried and tested online marketing tactics such as SEO, PPC and traditional social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter), rather than pursuing some new-fangled idea that may/may not be obsolete within a few months. You’re probably familiar with terms like SEO and PPC as they’re nothing particularly new (in fact, they’ve been around over a decade now), but they do work (assuming you don’t expect overnight results). This is where you should invest any time/effort/money when it comes to online marketing. Note: It’s important that you take the time to learn the basics of these terms. You may wish to utilise an agency (or a freelancer) to do this work for you, but a basic education is required to ensure you’re hiring the best company for the job. There are some great resources online in regards to SEO/PPC (such as this, and this), so have a read. If utilised correctly, online marketing has the power to skyrocket sales for almost any small business. Don’t Sleep When it comes to Traditional Printed Marketing (e.g. business cards, labels, etc.) While having a website and promoting said website effectively is extremely important for any modern-day business, it’s also important not to neglect the more “traditional” marketing tactics. The fact is that no matter what industry you’re in; chances are that your competitors are sleeping when it comes to printed marketing. Many will be investing their time/effort/money solely in online marketing tactics (including the aforementioned “shiny objects”), which means you can easily shine in the print department. For example, if you find that most of your competitors have relatively bog-standard business cards, this is an area you can shine. . Source Consider hiring a designer to create a stunning business card – perhaps with an “out of the box” design (such as the example above) – and you’ve already have the edge over your competitors. It’s also likely that your competitors are sleeping when it comes to labels and stickers (as this is a massively underutilised marketing tactic). Source By utilising stunning labels for your products (if you’re in retail, that is), you can easily stand out from the crowd and attract attention for your brand. Take a look at the product labels above for example. These labels give a relatively simple product the “wow” factor. Source Even if you’re not in retail, you can also use labels to market your business by raising brand awareness. Apple did in the early 2000’s when they gave free stickers/labels away (see image above) with every product purchase. With stickers and labels being so cost effective (you can get thousands for just a few pounds from companies like FastLabels.co.uk), they’re great for giving away at events, inside products, or even to existing fans of your brand, in order to raise brand awareness.

When a Sri Lankan dignitary like the President or the Prime Minister visits another country on an official tour, it is customary that he or she is accompanied by an official or more from the External Affairs Ministry (EAM). That is a tradition that had been practised for years, but is no longer done today. No briefing papers seem to be given either on issues concerning the country being visited.

The EAM has a life of its own. Nominally, the head, of course, is Minister G.L. Peiris. When he is out of Sri Lanka, as is the case most often, it falls on the shoulders of his deputy, Neomal Perera. Besides the duo, running the day-to-day affairs is Sajin de Vass Gunawardena, MP in charge of the EAM.The result of this messy situation is more and more embarrassment to Sri Lanka, a nation striving to become the ‘Wonder of Asia’.

One noteworthy instance is Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne’s visit just a week ago to Vietnam. Soon after he took part in a United Nations sponsored Vesak celebrations, Hanoi’s national news agency reported that Premier Jayaratne had hit out at China. He was quoted as saying that on the issue of China’s placement of its oil rig in Vietnam’s waters, Sri Lanka backed Vietnam’s position. He was also reported as saying that China should strictly adhere to international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Just seven hours after the event, in Sri Lanka, China’s Ambassador Wu Jianghao woke up a VIP hours before dawn to express his country’s displeasure at the comments. The result was a prompt clarification in the morning by the External Affairs Ministry which said such disputes should be settled bilaterally through negotiations by the concerned parties.

Well and good, one would say. Does that mean that Premier Jayaratne caused a gaffe? It has now come to light that he did not. If an EAM official was on hand, a source said, he could have ensured the release of an English text of the speech. Moreover, they would also know immediately that there was a wrong translation and that may cause damage.

Premier Jayaratne’s speech in Hanoi was made in Sinhala and interpreted into English by the Premier’s Secretary. Thereafter, a Vietnamese official had translated it into their national language. Thus, it was not just a case of ‘lost in translation.’ More appropriately it was loss of face to Sri Lanka.

That was last week’s gaffe by the EAM. There is one more among many others which occur with regular frequency. Sri Lanka’s Deputy Ambassador Esala Weerakoon was called back from Washington to Colombo after he had completed his term of two years. He was named High Commissioner to Canada and his appointment was accepted by the Ottawa Government. That was not all. He was also cleared by the Parliamentary Select Committee that scrutinises appointments to high posts.

However, in that period, Ambassador Jaliya Wickremasuriya, who had completed five years in Washington, was named High Commissioner to Canada. His nomination has still not been accepted by the host Canadian Government. As a result, he has now been offered the post of Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development. This is until his Ottawa appointment comes through.

Since Mr. Wickremasuriya relinquished office last Friday, Mr. Weerakoon was sent again to Washington D.C. This time, he will serve as “acting Ambassador” for some six weeks. Of course, he will not be able to use the residency since all furniture there has been removed. This appointment is until Prasad Kariyawasam, High Commissioner in India, , assumes duties in Washington as ambassador. There is a delay in his relinquishing duties until the Indian elections were over and the Cabinet formation takes place.

Mr. Weerakoon, who was asked to return to Colombo from Washington, was sent to set up a new Sri Lanka diplomatic mission in Seychelles. Earlier he was asked to ‘hold the fort’ in Cuba. He has now been called back and given another stop gap appointment. He is fast becoming a roving Ambassador-at-large.

The EAM also named Gamini Talpahewa as Deputy High Commissioner in the UK to succeed former journalist Neville de Silva. The young foreign service officer has declined to accept the position. There seems to be no takers for the deputy’s post in London for reasons well known in the EAM.
