I often hear Japanese students are shy in an EFL classroom, and I myself have long thought so.
However, I began to suspect that those seemingly shy students are not always that shy. My working hypothesis is that they may be shiest in class, around people they meet every week but don't know very well. So this semester I decided to try increasing interaction in class, especially in the first couple of weeks.
"One of the things that my students love the most on our KidBlog are our weekly blog challenges. And while these challenges are in sense homework, they always have the opportunity to do them at school, and get enough time to do it without being a hassle. Over the past two years we have had quite a lot of fun with these, so why not share for all you blogging with your students. Feel free to borrow or change to suit your kids."
My 2nd year EFL students have just started blogging, talking about places they love or want to visit. I'd very much appreciate it if you could drop by and leave comments.
I'll ask them, when we meet tomorrow, how they want to have their errors corrected. It's one my goals this year to find some good ways to give corrective feedback.

It's a good question! The fact is that blogs are filled with articles about Pinterest. For my part, I am absolutely convinced that this kind of social media will wreak havoc among users... and you? [note mg]
It's addictive, fun, visually appealing, and easy, so it's no wonder Pinterest, the popular visual bookmarking site, has hooked millions of users. That said, the site’s growth (below) was fairly flat from its launch in early 2010 until September 2011. But since then, it’s simply been going gangbusters, begging the question--why now? Here are three reasons why we think it’s become so attractive.
1. Pinterest rides (and defines) a new trend: social relevance.
Pinterest is successfully riding a new trend wave in the social space, moving mechanisms for content sharing beyond connections (friends) and towards relevance, effectively broadening the social horizon for us content addicts.
