That’s not to say they don’t believe in the power of openness. The first words of Wired magazine editor-in-chief Chris Anderson’s opening keynote were the very foundation of open source: “Everything I’ve learned as I built my own business is because people shared what they knew.”

Mons 2015 - Mapping Knowledge. Understanding the World through Data

Mons 2015 - Mapping Knowledge. Understanding the World through Data | Communication in the digital era | Scoop.it

The world we live in is ruled by knowledge.  Today there the volume of information has grown so huge that its complexity is almost impossible to grasp.  A discipline known as “data visualisation” has been created to deal with this upsurge of knowledge, and has recently been given a boost by the multiplication of IT tools, the advent of the Internet, the all-digital society, and Big Data.

« Revolution And Public Happiness «

« Revolution And Public Happiness « | Communication in the digital era | Scoop.it

The purpose of the following reflections is to rehabilitate the word “revolution.” No other word, except perhaps “freedom,” will be more urgently needed in the years to come, and no other word, without exception, has been more gravely compromised by the events of the 20th century. The end of colonialism and imperialism is leading one people after another “to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them.” And although natural law, right reason, and the inalienable rights of man no longer carry the weight of self-evident truth, yet wherever political bands of subordination and servitude are dissolved, in peace or in war, by violence or by mutual agreement, in rebellion against a foreign or a native ruler, a “revolution” has taken place.

Little room for women in Greek cabinet | Europe #NoDemocracyWithoutWomen

Little room for women in Greek cabinet | Europe #NoDemocracyWithoutWomen | Communication in the digital era | Scoop.it
#NoDemocracyWithoutWomen

That's especially the case in politics, where women have been traditionally underrepresented. "Greek society exhibits one of the lowest levels of women in positions of power and socio-economic decision-making in the EU," wrote Maro Pantelidou-Maloutas, a political science professor at the University of Athens and the author of "The Gender of Democracy: Citizenship and Gendered Subjectivity."

The leftist party now governing Greece, Syriza, has traditionally had more female members than other parties, especially the conservative New Democracy party that was defeated in recent parliamentary elections. But that didn't translate into strong female representation on the cabinet of a Syriza-led government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Only six of 40 cabinet members - and no senior cabinet members - are women.

Spanish women's rights activist Amparo Rubiales blasted the male-dominated Greek cabinet in the Spanish edition of The Huffington Post. "You cannot govern without women," she wrote, pointing out that Spaniards are sensitive about the issue of gender-equality in politics. Soon after her post, the hashtag #SinMujeresnohayDemocracia (No Democracy without Women) began trending in Spain.

Culture of patriarchy

Women make up an average of 20 percent of parliamentary seats globally, about the same as the average in the Greek parliament.

The anthropology of the “gotcha” question: Scott Walker Got Gotcha-ed

The anthropology of the “gotcha” question: Scott Walker Got Gotcha-ed | Communication in the digital era | Scoop.it
If journalists put their video cameras on pause, set aside their reporter’s notebooks and turned their keyboards off for a moment and started looking at politics with an anthropologist’s eye instead, what would they make of the three-day media storm precipitated by a Washington Post interview with presidential aspirant Gov. Scott K. Walker...
Andrea Naranjo's insight:

"Whether you’re running a campaign or covering one, on some level you’re conducting anthropological fieldwork—collecting data, eating what the locals eat, observing and interpreting manners and ceremonies and gaining the cooperation of informants while watching the horizons for symbols, signs and messages. Indeed, political anthropology already exists as a discipline.

McLeod, who called the presidential campaign “one of the most important political rituals of all time,” would have blessed the notion of campaign anthropologists. Does Bush employ a staff anthropologist? Should Walker? Should POLITICO?! I’ll take it up with my boss"

Media Sponsorship and Conflicting Articles Contribute to Dismissal of Journalist

Having written several well received freelance articles for Vice Media in 2012, Vice Media quickly snapped up the talents of Charles Davis for their bureau in Los Angeles, CA.

For what seemed a promising career in journalism, Davis, a freelancer was hired as associate editor for Vice Media. But in July 2014, he was shocked when he received his termination papers only two months into the job. [1]

According to Davis who went public on Twitter about the matter, the contributing factor to his quick dismissal were several articles that conflicted with some of the major sponsors of Vice Media. The posts on Twitter, backed by his screenshots of emails from his former employer suggested the articles were ‘killed’ because of the conflict of interest with advertisers and brand partners, namely the NFL, after he was hired. Vice Media denies this, rather, stating his dismissal was due to Davis falling asleep during an office meeting.

It was in December 2013 that the proverbial writing was on the wall when an article Davis wrote, highlighted the unpaid labor at the South and Southwest Festival. His previous article highlighting similar circumstances for unpaid labor in liberal media was well received. However, he received an email suggesting that because AT&T were co-sponsored by Vice Media at the festival, there may be struggle.

Just Published: "Peru Information Technology Report Q2 2015" | ClickPress

The Peruvian IT market is expected to be a regional outperformer 2015-2019, even though the rest of the economy will expand at lower average rates as a decline in metals prices weighs on private investment into mining and results in slower export growth. The relative immaturity of the Peruvian market, with low penetration of devices in the retail market, and solutions in the enterprise market, means we expect robust growth across all three IT market segments. A supportive economic environment will add to growth momentum, with r eal private consumption expected to remain above headline real GDP growth 2015-2019 . Meanwhile, g overnment policies continue to support IT sector growth and trends in the industry such as declining device prices, improvements in network infrastructure and cloud computing adoption will spur growth. The major downside risk to our outlook is the weaker Chinese demand for the country's raw materials . This risk has intensified in Peru since the beginning of 2014 and we expect this to continue to weigh on economic growth in the months ahead, with potential negative consequences for the IT sector.

As soon as humanity began its quest for knowledge, people have also attempted to organize that knowledge. From the invention of writing to the abacus, from medieval manuscripts to modern paperbacks, from microfiche to the Internet, our attempt to understand the world -- and catalog it in an orderly fashion with dictionaries, encyclopedias, libraries, and databases -- has evolved with new technologies.
