Blended Online Learning

Mentors & Global Citizens
April 22, 2012 was earth day and it got me thinking about giving freely so others can learn. I have been providing free online workshops for many years. I believe that we can all give a little for free. Giving is receiving. Our lives will be fuller and our pockets larger if we unite forces and help others get off the ground. We can provide tutoring so others can get the jobs they need to care for themselves and their families. We need you!
I would like to invite you to a discussion with Daniel Bassill and myself on how to make it happen. Daniel Bassill has been organizing non-school tutor/mentor programs in inner city high poverty neighborhoods in the USA for over 35years. We need your help to reach countries around the globe. Together, you and I can make a difference by making earth date everyday. Online learning is the key and IT4ALL Moodle is the place. With your help, we can create courses and continue making them free for those who cannot afford the tuition. In addition, if you create and facilitate a course, you can receive other courses that IT4ALL provides for free: http://www.integrating-technology.org
Enroll in the free online conversation event with Daniel Bassill and I on Conversation on WizIQ on April 25, 2012 at 11 AM EST: http://tinyurl.com/wiziq-conversation. Please check the following link for the exact time in your area: http://tinyurl.com/bndgagy

Spring is a great time to follow old and new dreams. Mine has always been to teach online. Teaching online is a great way to make extra money or earn a living by creating your very own online courses. Teaching online is full of AHA moments as teachers get to teach their way without having the school force them to teach to the test. Teaching online engages both the teacher and student. What better way to teach and learn via Moodle. Moodle is a free course and learning management system (CMS & LMS) that allows teachers to cater to students' individual needs. Learning to Learn and Teach From You!!!
There are many resources available online on how to teach online and face-to-face. I would try and write down "my needs as an online and/or face-to-face learner". What worked for me? What didn't work for me? I believe we should listen to our learners. I would ask my students to tell me how I can serve them best as learners. Learning from other online teachers may serve those teachers and their students, but will it apply to mine? I would try to create a needs assessment survey before each online and/or face-to-face class to learn about the students. I would allow for flexibility and would not be afraid to change the course layout by adding or removing items that do not serve my students' learning needs. Don't be afraid to apply your ideas to teaching. Your ideas are just as good as the resources you read about online. So, use and share your teaching/learning ideas by publishing them online in a blog/wiki or right here on Scoopit.
Learning online is about learning through social interactions with the content, teacher, and peers. It is not about memorizing information for tests. My tip is to read everything in the discussion forums in every online course you take. Google the terms you read about in the class resources and forums, read the articles that you find under Google scholar, and share the information with your teacher and colleagues. You may also wish to add them to your blogs and wikis.

Let's do things differently for a change...
John Dewey tried to defend the Alexander technique as scientific and valuable to know. In an introduction to a book written by the founder of the technique, Dewey summarizes one of Alexander's premises that one cannot judge whether things will work or not if "one uses the very conditions that need re-education as one's standard of judgement" (see The Use of the Self by F. M. Alexander, 1932,1985). We need to change our strategies unless we want to to get the same results. So, read this with an open mind and try something different, now: http://www.wiziq.com/blog/make-money-online-now/
