5 misconceptions about blended learning

5 misconceptions about blended learning | blended learning | Scoop.it

"Blended learning is transforming roles of teachers and students in many classrooms and has become a trendy buzzword in education in recent years. Yet, for all its trendiness and efficacy, the true meaning of what blended learning means has somehow gotten lost in all the buzz. This has become a term that has many meanings to many different stakeholders. I want to use this blog post to start the conversation around some of the most common misconceptions I encounter regarding blended learning, with hopes that we can demystify this very solid instructional approach."

Ten Ideas To Move Classroom Technology Closer To Blended Learning ~ 21st Educational Technology and Learning

Ten Ideas To Move Classroom Technology Closer To Blended Learning ~ 21st Educational Technology and Learning | blended learning | Scoop.it

by Michael Gorman

"As we employ the 1 to 1 experience, we need to ask two important questions. Is the 1 to 1 and the device about using technology, or is it about a more meaningful and engaging learning experience? Spending a day online for individual research can be a wonderful simple integration of technology experience, but might not be a true blended learning opportunity. Asking students to research and then collaborate with each other online in a collective experience takes this integration and provides more of a blended experience.

"The blended learning experience allows technology and the online experience to breakdown the traditional classroom allowing important transformation. One might wonder where on the spectrum of simple integration to blending learning a possible learning activity might be. I would like to share a lens of ten ideas that educators may wish to look at as they reflect on their 1 to 1 activity and classroom learning experiences that use technology . Sometimes it is just a simple tweak to bring out the wonderful possibilities of blended learning. Please feel free to read my ideas below that might allow you to use classroom technology to bring out a richer and blended learning experience."

Thanks to Jim Lerman for sharing this resourceful post by Michael Gorman on the topic of "Blended Learning".

Recently I was traveling to a school district in western Kansas, along with a group of awesome education minds, to provide professional development.  It was during the drive west a close friend of mine brought up the topic of "Blended Learning" and how she planned to provide insight and engagement on the topic for her session.  We all agreed that one would probably find 8 or more differing definitions out of a group of 10 educators.  I just wish I had this article to share with her prior to the session.  The article does a nice job of breaking down and explaining "Blended Learning".

Leonard Waks's curator insight, November 16, 2014 1:20 AM

Of these 10 proposed drivers, I an guessing that the most important will be #5 and #6. At least for the time being, universities are really strapped for funds. Consider for # 5 a 'MOOC-Based wrapped course' where a prof assigns a MOOC as homework, and then  meets with the class one day a week = and follows up with a couple of weeks of class time at the end for projects and examinations. This strikes me as a  good division of labor in many courses - letting the high production videos do what they do best and the prof do what demands a human mind and heart for problem solving and coaching and mentoring. It can reduce faculty time by more than 1/2 without loss of quality. Now for #6, consider a group of twenty faculty members teaching wrapped courses based on the very same MOOC. They will have many questions and concerns and they can (a) find each other and (b) address them collectively through their learning network. The only other 'driver' that floats my boat at this point is #3. Many students like MOOC-based courses. The lectures are excellent and fit conveniently into schedules, and the professor is available to serve his or her most important functions. But I wouldn't oversell this. Many students still prefer day to day hand holding and may actually need it from a socio-emotional perspective to stay engaged in the course. So I'm betting on #5 and #6 as most important.

Formative Assessment: The Secret Sauce of Blended Success

Formative Assessment: The Secret Sauce of Blended Success | blended learning | Scoop.it
A few weeks ago, a colleague emailed me about some trouble she was having with her first attempt at blended instruction. She had created some videos to pre-teach a concept, incorporated some active learning strategies into her face-to-face class to build on the video, and assigned an online quiz so she could assess what the students had learned. After grading the quizzes, however, she found that many of the students struggled with the concept. “Maybe,” she wondered, “blended instruction won’t work with my content area.”

How to deliver Blended Learning that drives engagement

How to deliver Blended Learning that drives engagement | blended learning | Scoop.it
This is certainly true of the new methodologies for teaching and learning that have evolved since the fascinatingly complex digital student took center stage in our classrooms. Time and time again teachers have asked themselves, “How do we connect with these kinds of students? How do we get them to learn?”

Gradually and out of necessity—not to mention a healthy dose of compassion and caring—new instructional methods that are sensitive to the needs and expectations of our digital students have evolved. The good news is that these new methods have largely been integrated into the lives of both teachers and students with much success, despite the worried looks and the head-shaking they initially caused. One of these methods is what we know as “blended learning.”

In part 2, he looked specifically at student-to-student interaction, and the reality of synchronous and asynchronous access, and in part 3 he looked at student-to-teacher interactions, and moving from instruction to becoming the “guide on the side.” In part 4 below, he explores the critical student-to-community interactionStudent-to-Community interaction is a critical piece of well-designed blended learning models, as this article explores.
