Excellent way to get started teaching search skills. (I know there's no room in your curriculum to do this. Perhaps that's what's wrong with your curriculum?)

What is Universal Design for Learning (UDL)? | National Center on Accessible Instructional Materials

What is Universal Design for Learning (UDL)? | National Center on Accessible Instructional Materials | Blended Learning - Collaboration | Scoop.it

Introduction

A major premise of this report is that access to the curriculum for students with low-incidence disabilities is greatly enhanced by universal design. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a particular framework that applies to education. More specifically, UDL is an approach that can guide curriculum reform. A universally-designed curriculum includes multiple means of representation (to allow various ways of acquiring information and knowledge), multiple means of expression (to allow alternatives for demonstrating knowledge), and multiple means of engagement (to challenge appropriately, to motivate, and to allow learners to express and participate in their interests). A number of current contrasting approaches to universal design will be described. We conclude with an explanation of UDL. This will allow the reader to keep UDL in mind while progressing through subsequent sections until UDL solutions for curriculum access are more closely examined in our conclusion.

6 challenges impeding technology adoption in higher education | Blended Learning - Collaboration | Scoop.it
In our second look at the NMC Horizon Report: 2014 Higher Education Edition, we cover the six “significant challenges” it identifies as impeding the adoption of technology in higher education

1- Low digital fluency among faculty

2- Relative lack of rewards for teaching

3- Competition from new models of education (MOOCs)

4- Scaling teaching innovations

5- Expanding access

6- Keeping education relevant

Blended Learning 2.0: A Visual Guide For Teachers - Edudemic

Blended Learning 2.0: A Visual Guide For Teachers - Edudemic | Blended Learning - Collaboration | Scoop.it

by Jeff Dunn

"Blended learning has taken off as one of the big trends in education over the past several years. Like flipped classrooms and 1:1 environments, it’s one of the top ways for teachers to leverage the power of technology in the classroom. It’s not a new concept, to be sure. However, there’s a new guide to understanding and implementing what’s being billed as blended learning 2.0.

"There are a few key stages of proper implementation that you should know if you’re looking to start climbing the blended learning tree. Starting from down at the roots is the planning process. It’s about a lot more than just ‘planning’ on buying some iPads. Planning involves creating appropriate blended learning spaces. That means you have a nice place for students to gather and collaborate while using technology. Scroll down to the bottom of the graphic below to get started."

"Blended Learning is not so much an innovation as it is a natural by-product of the digital domain creeping into physical boundaries. As digital and social media become more and more prevalent in the life of learners, it was only a matter of time before learning became “blended” by necessity.

That said, there’s a bit more to Blended and “Hybrid” Learning than throwing in a little digital learning." Terry Heick

To succeed today you must be in a constant state of adaptation – continually unlearning old ‘rules’ and relearning new ones.

Unlearning is about moving away from something—letting go—rather than acquiring. It’s like stripping old paint. It lays the foundation for the new layer of fresh learning to be acquired and to stick. But like the painter who needs to prepare a surface, stripping the paint is 70% of the work while repainting is only 30%.

I’d be the first to admit that when presented with shiny new technology, I am predisposed to expect that the new technology will perform better than the old.  New smart phones for the past six years have almost always been better than their predecessors.  Can the same be said for new educational technologies?  The short answer is no; new educational technologies alone do not lead to better student outcomes.

Rethinking Education: Self-Directed Learning Fits the Digital Age

Rethinking Education: Self-Directed Learning Fits the Digital Age | Blended Learning - Collaboration | Scoop.it

Is the one-size-fits-all, top-down classroom a misfit for the Digital Age?

Standards-based education is ruining the way educators teach and children learn. Education should not be about teaching to the next level in education and vocation and yet, that is exactly what our current school system is designed to do.

Our goal should be to foster a love of learning for learning sake. Learning is not something that we should force onto our children to ensure they go to college and get a good job. True learning is intrinsically motivated and the reward is knowledge.

I also think there is no limit to using technology in the classroom. I think every student learns differently and integrating technology in the classroom can help students find new means of studying that works well for them. I agree that teaching students to test them all the the same level is not the way to go about it. I think that it is "destroying our youth" and causing them to be high anxiety.
