Connectivism and Connective Knowledge ~ Stephen Downes

by Stephen Downes

"Eight years ago George Siemens coined the term ‘Connectivism’ to describe learning networks1 and has been generous enough to share it with me. This volume represents the bulk of my contribution to the field since then.

"Connectivism is the thesis that knowledge is distributed across a network of connections, and  therefore that learning consists of the ability to construct and traverse those networks. An account of connectivism is therefore necessarily preceded by an account of networks. But the bulk of this work is devoted to tracing the implications of this thesis in learning.

"Yes, this could have been a shorter book – and perhaps one day I’ll author a volume without the redundancies, false starts, detours and asides, and other miscellany. Such a volume would be sterile, however, and it feels more true to the actual enquiry to stay true to the original blog posts, essays and presentations that constitute this work.
Here is the abridged version of my philosophy, for those not wishing to read the 600 or so pages that follow:

"The scope of my work covers three major domains, knowledge, learning and community. Each of these represents an aspect of network theory: the first, examining the cognitive properties of networks, the second, looking at how networks learn, and the third, tracing the properties of effective networks. These also represent the processes of learning, inference and discovery in society writ large."

Jim Lerman's insight:

Downes is one of the deepest thinkers around on networked learning. This 600-page e-book is a compilation of a great deal of his writing. Published in 2012, I just came across it on his website. The book is a free download.

Writing Center offers online tutoring after hours

Online tutoring, provided by the FMU Writing Center (WC), gives FMU students a new way to access tutorials outside of normal hours.
Dr. Jennifer Kunka, director of the WC, implemented the program last semester for off-campus students, but has decided to offer online tutoring for the entire student body.
“It began because we wanted to provide Writing Center tutoring assistance to students who are not physically taking class on the campus,” Kunka said. “[Now] we have decided to expand it this semester to a wider audience. We’ve opened it up to the entire university and have started to get some interest in it from students who are signing up to make use of what we can offer.”
Justin McGee, one of four online WC consultants, said that Collaborate is an environment that provides almost the same experience as meeting face to face.
“It’s different because you lose that one-on-one interaction between the student and the tutor,” McGee said. “However, the program we use, Blackboard Collaborate, really makes the sessions as similar to normal tutoring sessions as possible.”
Tutorials take place through an online application called Blackboard Collaborate. Collaborate is part of the Blackboard website which many professors use to post assignments and quizzes for students. Collaborate provides specialized tools for online tutoring allowing students to share documents and to interact with the tutors in various ways.
Students who are interested in using Blackboard Collaborate through the online tutoring program are required to have a microphone and speakers or headphones in order to talk to the tutors. A webcam is helpful, but optional for students. The tutors, however, will have a headset as well as a webcam so students can both see and hear them during the tutorial.
Although the tutoring sessions provide the same quality of tutoring found in the WC, some prior set-up is essential to make sure everything happens as it should.

Online versus Traditional Learning: A Comparison Study of Colorado Community College Science Classes

Students are currently given more and more options in postsecondary education be it the traditional format in the classroom, in a virtual world online, or a hybrid of the two options.  The Colorado Community College System (CCCS) offers numerous courses both in the traditional and online format. Recently in Colorado discussions regarding traditional and online courses have centered on science courses.  This study conducted by the Colorado Department of Higher Education compares students enrolled at the Colorado Community College System in traditional and online science courses. The second part of the study tracks these same students into a four year institution and compares academic performance in science courses.
