Taking a break is secret to success

Taking a break is secret to success | BlackSheep Strategy | Scoop.it

FORGET what your teachers said, practice doesn't make perfect.

At least it doesn't when you practise over and over again without a break.
Sydney scientists have found learning improves when students take a rest from continuous study or training.

''It seems intuitive that every minute of study should make you better, but, actually, if you do too much it might backfire and you end up wasting time,'' said the study's lead researcher, Joel Pearson.

"What does this experience make possible?": A Question That Changes Everything

"What does this experience make possible?": A Question That Changes Everything | BlackSheep Strategy | Scoop.it
You can’t always choose what happens to you. Accidents and tragedy's happen. But you can choose how you respond to those situations. One of the best ways to begin is to ask yourself the right questions.

One of the best questions you can ask when something negative happens is this:

“What does this experience make possible?”

Do you see the subtle shift? Suddenly, your attention moves from the past—which you can’t do a thing about—to the future.

It is also an acknowledgment that nothing happens by chance. Everything has a purpose. Even the bad things can have a positive impact, when we open our hearts and accept them as “part of the plan.”

5 Leadership Lessons You Won't Learn in B-School

5 Leadership Lessons You Won't Learn in B-School | BlackSheep Strategy | Scoop.it

First he spoke about the importance of inspiration. Then he talked about the power of passion. Then he discussed the value of vision.

Then I almost fell asleep.

I was sitting in on a class, and the professor was describing the traits of a great leader. I certainly didn't disagree with his list: vision, passion, inspiration, dedication, fairness, accountability. Those are important traits of a great leader. Still, I realized I would retain very little of what he said.

Stress Is Not Your Enemy

Stress Is Not Your Enemy | BlackSheep Strategy | Scoop.it
How often do you intentionally push yourself to discomfort? I know that sounds a little nutty, but here's why I ask: Subjecting yourself to stress is the only way to systematically get stronger — physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

We live by the myth that stress is the enemy in our lives. The real enemy is our failure to balance stress with intermittent rest. Push the body too hard for too long — chronic stress — and the result will indeed be burnout and breakdown. But subject the body to insufficient stress, and it will weaken and atrophy.

Few of us push ourselves nearly hard enough to realize our potential, nor do we rest, sleep, and renew nearly as deeply or for as long as we should.
