Larvae turning leftovers into profits and jobs

Larvae turning leftovers into profits and jobs | black soldier fly | Scoop.it
Flies naturally swarm to discarded food, and in feasting on it extract the nutrients and energy, leaving nothing to waste.Glen Courtright, president and founder of EnviroFlight, has developed a system for turning fly larvae into food for fish. The company breeds black soldier flies and the eggs are collected. The larvae grow eating pre-consumer food waste and are then harvested and made into feed for the aquaculture industry

Article about Mass Production of Black Soldier Fly Prepupae for Aquaculture Diets
Symton BSF Solutions's insight:

We recently noticed that fishes live in aquaponic system need a relatively longer time to learn eating black soldier fly larvae. We think it's because the smell of larvae is not familiar to what the fish used to eat. One solution could be mixing the larvae with soaked fishmeal that the fishes are used to eat, and let the larvae have a meal of the feed then the larvae got the smell on them and the fishes should be responsive to the new feed. Once they learned, they learned.
