Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped slavery and became an abolitionist, women's rights advocate, newspaper publisher, and lecturer. In 1852, the people of Rochester, New York asked him to give a speech at their 4th of July celebration. Douglass agreed. What he said that day is one of the great American speeches.
