If Design’s No Longer the Killer Differentiator, is it #STEM - #STEAM or #STEAMED

If Design’s No Longer the Killer Differentiator, is it #STEM - #STEAM or #STEAMED | Black Fashion Designers | Scoop.it

If Design's No Longer the Killer Differentiator, What Is? | Wired Opinion | Wired.com

"Instead of competing on technology, everyone's now competing on design. But design is no longer the killer differentiator.

"Designers create solutions – the products and services that propel us forward. But artists create questions — the deep probing of purpose and meaning that sometimes takes us backward and sideways to reveal which way “forward” actually is. The questions that artists make are often enigmatic, answering a why with another why. Because of this, understanding art is difficult: I like to say that if you’re having difficulty “getting” art, then it’s doing its job...
when we manage to shed our stereotypes of artists as psychologically unstable, we get to see what an artist really is: someone who often exchanges his own welfare and even his life for a cause that may have no meaning to anyone else, but means everything to him or her.

In other words, an artist is truly in it for themselves – not just for reasons of wanting to get rich, or get famous, or find a path to comfort. The artist needs to understand the truth that lies at the bottom of an enigma. "

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

ART Without EXEcUTION is simply  a Dream and without  Distribution even teh best products die. so while teh author Ads an "A" to STEM , I'll take the liberty of adding an "ED"

Many  will simply not get this article... it is about  Innovation and written from an Innovative mindset.  That's Ok some get it  some don't.  working  with artist to adopt and adapt technology  i continually see firsthand the Genius solutions that Artist think  up!

Execution though is a huge challenge and even if they can iterate their concept they  often fail to effectively market and distribute their ideas.

Turning Point | How Want Les Essentiels de la Vie Found Its Footing - BoF - The Business of Fashion | Black Fashion Designers | Scoop.it

MONTRÉAL, Canada — These days things are humming along nicely for Want Les Essentiels de la Vie, the leather accessories label with an unwieldy French name founded in 2006 by Mark Wiltzer and twin brothers Byron and Dexter Peart. More than a hundred stores around the world, including influential retailers like Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman and Colette, now carry the brand’s practical, smartly-designed technology cases, travel bags, card holders and gloves.

What's "Wrong" in This image! Fashion By Africa: Maki Oh Autumn/Winter 2013 (Photos+Video) | Black Fashion Designers | Scoop.it
Fashion By Africa: Maki Oh Autumn/Winter 2013 (Photos+Video) Nigerian womenswear label, Maki Oh debuts wonderful adire outfits for its Autumn/Winter 2013 collection. Go eyes on.
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

Is that a pocket on the bustline or is their a fit problem  at the bustline!

It took some back and forth before deciding to post this... but it was such an excellent example of why a line may not be picked up!

There is also  aquestion on the sleeve as well as the hemline.. is that intentional or is it a flaw.

Few designers Know what they are looking  to correct or spot  during  Fit sessions! Which translates to not knowing what to  spont in their lookbook images!

.

SEEING a Look Book from a Buyers or critics eye...

It is sad because the images are interesting and the lines well thought out! So what's the problem...

Trained eyes can easily  pick up  poor construction and problems in fit!  As a buyer, I'd also test these on my own fit model these images speak of selling solely  to an androgynous client!

Even if the sale sample fits,  I would pay  particular attention to the drape, especially in this white number!

In the end you are Not selling 'Image" but apparel.
