Bonnie Sandy's curator insight, November 14, 2013 12:31 PM

Artist - in the visual  category - or Textile artist-  pattern  and production help is available this weekend only NY or via skype  for home, accessories etc - If you need a pattern or item  for Holiday  2013. THIS WEEKEND. One of the designers who works with me has agreed to  help.  She is a master technical designer.

Frankly it is worth it  to invest  rather than start a pattern making /grading  if you intend to sell between  now and next  spring. GREAT  for artist who want to to  offer painted items.  I  also have one dressmaker and a manufacturer. Also  Reminder today is the Last  day  for free  Listing on www.demarketpace.com/buylocal - curating the best Fashion  Art media textiles by  artisans, crafters, designers to my  over 20000 network.

NY  only- In setting  up  Demarketpace we reaized that many creatives needed  affordable we made gift  items! So  I  negotiated with a couple of my colleagues. While a short  term  solution  they will accept only holiday  2013.

Long term soution -  Spring  2014 can be discussed but  may be executed post  holiday!  It may be wiser to invest in trained technical help rather than DIY or taking a class. Quality takes Years to develop. January we will focus onlongterm soutions. We're about soutions and if artist designers and crafters do NOT earn during the holiday season then they cannot take casses etc

Locks, twist & 'fro's, Gracie Mansion, natural hairstyles & the re-education of a nation

Locks, twist & 'fro's, Gracie Mansion, natural hairstyles & the re-education of a nation | Black Fashion Designers | Scoop.it

"The de Blasio family represents the increased diversity and blending of cultures in the Big Apple. ..
Commentary on the hair of de Blasio’s family has ventured into new territory. When Dante said he washed his hair only about once a week — normal for black hair, which can become brittle and dry from over-washing — a reporter cheekily tweeted that perhaps his parents should encourage him to shampoo more often. His mom tweeted back: The reporter “obviously knows little, if anything, about African American hair.”

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

This viewpoint is interesting, but  I   am more fascinated by  a larger  picture. Our Youth  have the capacity  to  instigate change... When my cousin's  14 year old daughter  introduced me to  "Dante's Youtube video ", She also  put  forth a well laid out argument  as to why  we as adults should vote for his dad. i think many miss the value of the  De Blassio off Springs- one appealing to high scool , the other to  colledge age Youth  with access to parents.

What Does #FashionTech Mean For Fashion? Definitely not add #tech to #fashion and stir.

What Does #FashionTech Mean For Fashion? Definitely not add #tech to #fashion and stir. | Black Fashion Designers | Scoop.it
The opportunities to connect and generate revenue through new models is a game changer. By Christine E.
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

Technology allows me to help local dressmakers and designers globally... it allows these locals to reach a global market. There is still a need for better tech enabled tools.

I really do not think this article answers the quetion as to what excatly is fashiontech and from what I'm seeing not sure many using the term are sure or even close to understanding. and the Fashion crew... well most, simply want to do as they wish;-
"all I need from you is the tech"

You cannot simply  add tech to fashion and stir. Fashion is not simply an "intellectual" pursuit. It is culture, passion, religion to some.

Revenue is the last  point (well almost) of fashion.

Those focused on revenue miss so much more. there are fashion tech isses, needs in

Sourcing

Very few of these are being tackled and those that are may be outside the context relevant  to one of three constiuents

Even then the needs of mass market  may differ from teh needs of teh Luxury market , may  differ from that of Local Global economies...

That also does not address the fact that the value of "Fashion" can be

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

Finally another leader in the local  fashion community speaks out!
The first step of change is getting on the  same page!

So what's next

A Creative sector stakeholders meeting...

RSVP https://making-art-fashion-tech.eventbrite.com/ ;

So  I am accepting the offer of space from another  leading  designer Janathan Adewume. to hold a meeting on the evening of September 30th

I have been  PUBLICLY calling artist and designers on this for YEARS! Those of us who are leaders know the TRUTH!  For the last10 years I've offered help and occassionally some of these same designers would make a desperate call for help  but the minute things seemed to change they ran straight back to their old habits!  I have been the "bad paret' the "disciplinarian" that many  avoided.

However for every one of these stories I can point to a success story of a designer or artist making a change using a technique I recommended and SHOWING stability and often increased income.

However It is a Lot more complicated than we will admit. as I told another leader last night teh truth is many simply look after their own interest.

Vlisco, the African Fashion Titan - #AfricanPrints - Indonesian batik by Dutch Company- still smh | Black Fashion Designers | Scoop.it

The most highly prized African wax prints are made by a company called Vlisco. Indeed, such is the value of Vlisco to a wide spectrum of African women that the fabric maker has grown into a successful global brand with a turnover that is expected to approach €300 million (about $414 million) this year.

Over 90 percent of Vlisco’s sales come from the African continent itself, where, at present, it is one of the only international fashion and apparel brands with a significant presence. You see, Vlisco is a Dutch company.

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

'African Prints"... are in  fact  Indonesian batik by a dutch  company.... I was 13 when I first discovered this... i love Vlisco as prints but I still feel betrayed by this SMH...  and still hav eto explain to those who  question why  i do not use it!
