I Am Georgia | Photographer: Dina Oganova

I Am Georgia | Photographer: Dina Oganova | BLACK AND WHITE | Scoop.it

For photographer Dina Oganova, each and every aspect of her country is precious and unique. In her series I Am Georgia, Oganova chronicles the daily facets of the homeland she has always treasured. Here we see children at play, the elderly at prayer, and everyday familial celebrations.

Made up of only four million residents, Georgia has existed as a sovereign state for a little over a decade. Bordered by Russia, Turkey and the Black Sea, the country faced civil war the same year it declared independence from the Soviet Union.

A land of refugees and with a history of conflict, Georgia’s people attempt to hold on to traditions while plunging into the future. In this relatively new and foreign landscape, I Am Georgia is a personal and spirited testament to who the country is and to who it is becoming.

Twilight Tales

In Japan, I discovered the works of Lotte Reiniger. I saw some very good cartoons where the shadows made it very effectively evoking the posture of the protagonists and the plot was more striking narrated.

So I noted in my notebook December 5, 2006: “Shadow and narration. Photography”…

One day, I took my camera and I went down into the courtyard. My 5 year old girl looking for ladybugs and snails in the pile of dead leaves that lay along the shed. She wants to give me the benefit of each of these discoveries.

It is by chance seeing our shadow on the lawn that I remembered the work of Lotte Reiniger.

I came back at home to draw an animal on thick paper. The animal is a fawn paper which I drew the outline of a box that I put on a low wall. The photo was taken at dusk. The best time to photograph the shadows.- Serge Bouvet

Recall | Photographer: Anastasia Bogomolova

Recall | Photographer: Anastasia Bogomolova | BLACK AND WHITE | Scoop.it

For the past four years Russian photographer Anastasia Bogomolova has been studying the story of her family via photographs. She digs through countless old images, calling upon family members to recount events and moments from the past.

Recall is the young photographer’s exploration of identity, memory and time through imagery. Inspired to unveil the history of her kin through fragmented memories, Bogomolova also notes that sometimes we are the ones who have to finish writing our family stories. Recall reminds us of the power a photograph can hold—the story it tells and simultaneously leaves out.

My Moscow | Photographer : Igor Moukhin | BLACK AND WHITE | Scoop.it

Igor Vladimirovich Moukhin (И́горь Влади́мирович Му́хин), is a Soviet and Russian photographer. Since 1989, he has been working as an independent photographer. In the mid-1990s, he worked on documentary projects about Moscow and provincial Russia.

Igor is reputed one of the most important contemporary Russian photographers. He is based in Moscow and besides continuing his practice as a photographer, he lectures at Rodchenko School of Photography.
Using his individual and familiar style Moukhin reconstructs and explores reality of  post-soviet society in his native city Moscow. The images expose public and private life of various strata of citizens, different kinds of political, public or artistic groups and subcultures.

This way, the book My Moscow (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Igor-Moukhin-My-Moscow-Photographs/dp/9053307672) covers the great epoch of changes and course of life of numerous generations of Moscovites that were faced with this twenty-five years period of changes and hope.
The book also contains a very personal interview by Irina Meglinskaya with Igor Moukhin and an essay by the famous Russian modern writer Zakhar Prilepin.
