Something about digital black and white seems odd to me.  Like a Google translation of the King James version of the Bible?  All digital is literal facsimile.  Analog = evocative sensory object, with many layers of referent and referred laminated together.  Digital is simulated, and only has one real dimension.  Analog has several dimensions, including the analog substrate, the resistance of the substrate to manipulation which varies by numerous parameters, and other split hairs.  It doesn't really make much difference to most people, and an $8000 camera to simulate what a $30 film camera from ebay can do as well or better might strike most people as a good idea.

Art review: The patience and passion of photographer John Elder

Art review: The patience and passion of photographer John Elder | black and white film photo | Scoop.it

Of course, he does all of his developing, from negative to finished print, in his own darkroom, and maintains strict control over every aspect of his medium. He only uses the best silver-gelatin, double weight, fiber-based paper that money can buy and refuses to crop or trim his shots. He composes them directly through the lens while patiently observing his surroundings. He can be compared to a deer hunter sitting in a tree, but instead of a bow or a rifle he uses a Leica Rangefinder camera while wandering through back streets or a city park.

DIANE ARBUS: “Diane Arbus MoMA Exhibition Wall Label” (1972)

DIANE ARBUS: “Diane Arbus MoMA Exhibition Wall Label” (1972) | black and white film photo | Scoop.it

Diane Arbus’s pictures challenge the basic assumptions on which most documentary photography has been thought to rest, for they deal with private rather than social realities, with psychological rather than historical facts, with the prototypical and mythic rather than the topical and temporal. Her photographs record the outward signs of inner mysteries.
