Horses at the round barn. Taken with Ansco/Agfa 1923 studio 8x10 film camera. Lens is a 300 mm Tessar f4.5 -- a faintly wide angle for this size negative. 100 ISO film, f22 at 1/30 sec exposure.
Jeff Beddow's insight:

I took this photo with a camera that was 4 years older than the barn, which was built in 1927.

I took this photo.  The barn is being preserved at great cost to the present owner. He spent over $50,000 recently to reroof the structure.  At this point, communities need to consider helping to preserve these landmarks of American culture.

B&W film in the snow fields.
Jeff Beddow's insight:

I have been spending too much time with digital photography this year.  I created this topic to keep me involved in B&W film photography.  To be really involved, I needed to put some film in the Leica and get out into the fields today.  It was marvelous.  It was the real deal.

Jeff Beddow's insight:

I have jumped back into the darkroom recently.  My 8x10 camera took me out into the fields in late winter to take photos of barns, and more recently I have been running film through my Leica and processing some old rolls that I had been saving for some time.

This is a photo taken with a Minolta AF film SLR on Ilford Delta 400 bulk rolled 35mm film and processed in Kodak HC110 developer.  I have rediscovered this developer film combination and am very happy with it.

Film diaries: the first roll

Film diaries: the first roll | black and white film photo | Scoop.it

Some months ago, I acquired a vintage Nikon F2 Titan in the hopes of both fulfilling a longtime photographic dream, as well as perhaps shooting a little film again in the name of stimulating creativity. Many of you have been anxious to see the results; I bet none more so than myself. The trouble is, I feel that I’ve set a standard here that I must uphold; if the images from this roll don’t meet that standard, then I think there’s going to be a lot of hand-wringing, rude gestures and cries of ‘pah, amateur’. In this post follows the highlights of that first roll.

Via Lars-Göran Hedström
Jeff Beddow's insight:

Here is a strange tale of a photographer who rephotographs his arduously developed 35mm film with a home-made copy stand based on a Nikon D800e digital camera and tries to understand the tone maps that result.  It is interesting, and the photographer is experienced and skilled, so it is not as comic as it sounds on the surface.  I am writing a reply to the post, as the issue of digital vs analog photography is resurfacing with the renewal of interest in film among students artists and Hollywood celebrities..

Jeff Beddow's comment, March 18, 2013 10:22 PM
I shoot with a Nikon D-700 and a whole raft of film cameras, including a Leica M3, and a 1923 Agfa/Ansco 8x10 studio view camera. Film cannot be superseded by digital yet, and there is a good reason for that which is a bit technical and difficult to explain, but easy to see.
