But how can we know that students are learning? - Unio | bITs and pieces | Scoop.it

– Guest Blog by Educational Technologist, Tony Parkin
It’s an age-old problem. How do we know what the children know? How can teachers be confident that the students are learning what they are being taught? Monitoring has always been a challenge, and many approaches to meet it merely add to teacher workload.

The Thing about BETT? The funky Futures

The Thing about BETT? The funky Futures | bITs and pieces | Scoop.it
This year’s BETT 2017 ‘thing’ was VR, virtual reality. Every other stand seemed to have people shambling around with their faces buried in headsets, bumping into the furniture, uttering ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, and generally challenging health and safety guidelines.
Tony Parkin's insight:
In which I avoid all the VR and head for the educationally exciting stuff in the BETT Futures zone.

Do we need more mavericks in education? | bee-it | bITs and pieces | Scoop.it
Sometimes the gods smile upon disruptive nostalgists. It’s not every day you are invited to attend a gathering of maverick teachers, for example. It’s even rarer to be invited to attend such an event in another country, indeed, on another continent. Especially one you have never visited, and have always wanted to. Be prepared to indulge
Tony Parkin's insight:
A gathering of maverick teachers sets off a train of thought about the essential nature of the maverick in education....

Show me the money? When two worlds collide… | bITs and pieces | Scoop.it
Whatever your viewpoint, there are undoubtedly exciting and transformative things happening in the educational startup space. Creative teachers, or recent graduates with ideas to improve on their own experience of education, are now being offered far greater opportunities to put these concepts into practice. Education startups are springing up everywhere, competing to join incubators and accelerators, and aspiring to transform education in a way far removed from the traditional routes typically experienced via established publishers and more traditional education suppliers. And fascinating new structures and organisations are appearing that attempt to foster the mixing of commercial oil and education water.

Keep taking the tablets? | bee-it | bITs and pieces | Scoop.it

The DfE recently announced an opportunity to ‘Register to buy tablet devices for your school’ (8 April 2016) in an effort to bring back collective buying power to schools seeking to purchase iPads and other tablets. They explain that: “DfE is facilitating a further procurement to allow schools to buy tablets using ‘collective buying power’....

Tony Parkin's insight:
My suggestion that the DfE's deal via CCS isn't as great as it could be, when the discount can be easily beaten by a simple Amazon purchase!

Gamification: What's the points? | bee-it | bITs and pieces | Scoop.it

Gamification is not new to our classrooms. Classrooms are the real games fields, the only change of late is that teachers may be deliberately instigating more of the gaming than before. Ritual games that pass down through the years and are a crucial part of the social conditioning and development process that is formal education.

I have never really understood why school uniform is still a thing. That isn’t to say I haven’t heard all the arguments for and against, rehearsed ad nauseam – there are whole websites devoted to this. I just don’t get why this oddly militaristic anachronism has any serious support from many otherwise intelligent people in the world of UK education who apparently feel better if all children look the same when being schooled.

Mastering the art of classroom management | bee-it

Mastering the art of classroom management | bee-it | bITs and pieces | Scoop.it

With the the current crop of education ‘fly-on-the-wall’ documentaries, the appointment of a behaviour tsar, and claims that low-level disruption is a main cause of teachers leaving the profession, the focus is back on classroom management, big time. One aspect at which these documentaries excel is revealing the mysterious alchemy that comes into play between staff and pupils...

So Nicky Morgan is directing an extra £3.5 million spend on building character and grit in today’s schoolchildren. Assuming the school hasn’t already sold off the playing fields, of course.
