Deciphering The Basic Lunging Commands | The Chronicle of the Horse

Deciphering The Basic Lunging Commands | The Chronicle of the Horse | Bits and Bobs | Scoop.it
Mary Getsey Bernier's insight:

"Lunging—correctly and productively—requires much practice and skill. Keeping the horse at a consistent distance and the line at correct tension is an art form—not to mention the nuances of pace and control. And since humans and horses lack common language, effective communication is challenging.

What we ask for and what we get (or what we settle for) often differs. But I think I’ve finally cracked the code and figured out what the things we say and do mean to the horse. I hope the guidelines below take some of the guesswork out of it for you." ~ Jody Lynne Werner

Kronbali: About | Bits and Bobs | Scoop.it
Mary Getsey Bernier's insight:

Check out the stunningly beautiful art and décor, from Kronbali... The Juju hats are a personal favorite!

"Kronbali is a family run company, founded in 1979, and is based in Bordeaux, in the Southwest of France.

Its founder, Jean-Marc, an antiques specialist, became restless and began traveling in search of rare items. With his wife, Sunshine, they spend their time traveling through West Africa, Indonesia, Pakistan, Yemen and India.

In India, they search for antique hand woven and embroidered textiles, traditional jewelry and wooden and marble statues. From Ladakh they bring back antique singing bowls, headdresses and ornaments.

Kronbali works with Cameroonian artisans who make feather headdresses in the traditional manner and also craft variations on these traditional pieces according to Jean-Marc’s specifications. These headdresses, called « Juju hats » have become very popular in the design world.

Kronbali specializes in one-of-a-kind pieces and hand crafted objects. The focus is on the beauty of the products and the human scale processes used to produce them.

Kronbali has been working internationally for over 30 years and their professional and private clients cover the globe."

Mary Getsey Bernier's insight:

As a "systems" person, I can imagine the logistical planning and coordination it took to pull this one off, which makes it even more spectacular. Wouldn't it be amazing if we all worked hard, together, to bring this much happiness and delight to people? It isn't just about the material gifts, it is about the effort to show you listen, you care, you find creative ways to make people happy, and still believe in miracles. Whether to strangers, or ones you love. Take heed of this, not just during the holidays, but for all days. Bravo, WestJet! I ♥ Canada!

Russell Brand May Have Started a Revolution Last Night

Russell Brand May Have Started a Revolution Last Night | Bits and Bobs | Scoop.it
The revolution itself may not be televised, but on last night's edition of the BBC's Newsnight, viewers may have witnessed the start of one.
Mary Getsey Bernier's insight:

At my ficticious roundtable, I would love to hear a discussion between Russell Brand, and "Dennis," the peat-digging peasant from "Monty Python's Holy Grail." I'm certain they would team up fantastically, and brilliantly unseat the current broken political system. What he says about Britain's ineffective political system and the impact of socio-economic disparity applies over here in America, too!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOOTKA0aGI0

Scene: Dennis The Constitutional Peasant meets King Arthur...

Dennis: What I object to is you automatically treatin' me like an inferior.
Arthur: Well, I am king.
Dennis: Oh, king, eh? Very nice. And how'd you get that, then? By exploiting the workers! By hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society! If there's ever going to be any progress--
Dennis: We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as sort-of-executive officer for the week--
Arthur: Yes.
Dennis: But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting--
Arthur: Yes, I see.
Dennis: By a simple majority, in the case of purely internal affairs--
Arthur: [getting annoyed] Be quiet.
Dennis: But by a two thirds majority, in the case of more major--
Arthur: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
Dennis' Mother: Order, eh? Who does he think he is?
Arthur: I am your king!
Dennis' Mother: Well I didn't vote for you.
Arthur: You don't vote for kings!
Dennis' Mother: Well how'd you become king, then?
Arthur: The Lady of the Lake,... [Angel chorus begins singing in background] her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. [Angel chorus ends] That is why I am your king!
Dennis: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
Arthur: Shut up!
Dennis: I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
Arthur: Shut up; will you SHUT UP?! [Grabs Dennis and shakes him]
Dennis: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system!
Arthur: SHUT UP!
Dennis: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I'm being repressed!!
Arthur: BLOODY PEASANT! releases Dennis and walks away as other peasents come to see what's going on]
Dennis: Oh, what a giveaway. Did you hear that? Did you hear that, eh? That's what I'm all about! Did you see him repressing me? You saw it, didn't you?

Audiotree is a Chicago-based, artist-centric music company, best known for our in-studio concert series, Audiotree Live. We also provide artist management, concert promotion, concert filming/recording, and various “à la carte” music industry services.
Mary Getsey Bernier's insight:

Saw this band March 15, 2014, at the Ottobar, Baltimore, Maryland. Three band members from Leeds pack a powerful punch, demonstrating keen musical skills, and more than enough energy that kept the venue completely engaged. Tight sound. Hints of grunge, but they make the music completely their own. Brilliant band with a terrific future!

Mary Getsey Bernier's insight:

The power of art, in unexpected places...

"Susie Taylor (Freelance Photojournalist and founder of The Soulside Out) and partner Jason Motlagh began researching and reporting on Bangladesh‘s garment industry and the effects of ‘extreme working conditions and systemic poverty on people’s lives’ in early 2013. The duo’s efforts culminated in Dignity in Industry, a public art exhibition installed in Dhaka’s largest slum in September 2013."  (Source:  www.theculturetrip.com)

David Simon: 'There are now two Americas. My country is a horror show' | Bits and Bobs | Scoop.it
David Simon: Capitalism in America has lost sight of its social compact
Mary Getsey Bernier's insight:

"And kind of interesting in this last recession to see the economy shrug and start to throw white middle-class people into the same boat, so that they became vulnerable to the drug war, say from methamphetamine, or they became unable to qualify for college loans. And all of a sudden a certain faith in the economic engine and the economic authority of Wall Street and market logic started to fall away from people. And they realised it's not just about race, it's about something even more terrifying. It's about class. Are you at the top of the wave or are you at the bottom?"

Swedes Develop Invisible Bike Helmet | Bits and Bobs | Scoop.it
You know what kind of sucks about riding a bike? Other than all that pedaling? Bike helmets. Sure, they keep that overrated "brain" from getting splattered, but they take a lot of the open-air-joy out of things, and they're not comfortable.

22 Things Happy People Do Differently | Positive Way

22 Things Happy People Do Differently | Positive Way | Bits and Bobs | Scoop.it
Mary Getsey Bernier's insight:

Bits and Bobs, shared by Mary Getsey Bernier:

Thursday food for thought: "there are two types of people in the world: those who choose to be happy, and those who choose to be unhappy. Contrary to popular belief, happiness doesn’t come from fame, fortune, other people, or material possessions. Rather, it comes from within. The richest person in the world could be miserable while a homeless person could be right outside, walking around with a spring in every step. Happy people are happy because they make themselves happy. They maintain a positive outlook on life and remain at peace with themselves. The question is: how do they do that?" (from: "22 Things Happy People Do Differently," Chiara Fucarino)
