It was the sight of a Blackburnian Warbler that determined the fate of a 34-year-old Minnesota housewife. Phoebe Snetsinger, the inspiration for a new Google Doodle, was the woman who made her life’s work of documenting more than 8,300 bird species - the first person to do so. The 9th June 2016 would have been her 85th birthday.

Thousands of songbirds and other birds will be on display in their multiple resplendent mating colors at the second annual St. Bernard Bird Festival April 29 and 30. Nature lovers, birding enthusiasts and those who enjoy the outdoors will thrive on the experience of participating in the festival, said Anthony Fernandez Jr., organizer of the event. "The bird festival is an opportunity to see part of God's beautiful creation," Fernandez said. "It's all around you, and it's an awesome experience." The hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 29 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 30. The festival will be held at the Los Islenos Museum Complex, 1351 Bayou Road, St. Bernard and St. Bernard State Park, 501 St. Bernard Park Way, St. Bernard. All of the activities will originate at the Los Islenos Museum complex. Admission is free. Almost three decades ago, Fernandez said he began noticing an increasingly large number of "beautiful and spectacular" birds gathering in St. Bernard Parish in April.
