Le 1er octobre 2012 sera inauguré à Montpellier l’Institut de Biologie Computationnelle (IBC), porté par l’Université Montpellier 2. L’IBC fait partie des projets en bioinformatique retenus en février 2012 et financés par le gouvernement dans le cadre des investissements d’avenir. A ce titre, le projet est doté de 2 millions d’euros distribués sur 5 ans. Delete the scoop?

Software drives bioinformatics. We use every day to analyze data. We use them to build other tools. In our everyday work, software is often the rate-limiting step. In that case, why is so much bioinformatics software so bad? Why is it so cumbersome or so user-hostile? Why does it have strange and arbitrary limitations? Why does it make the things we do every day so hard? Delete the scoop?

I just learned about this one: ROSALIND is a really cool concept in learning bioinformatics. You are given problems of increasing difficulty to solve. Start with nucleotide counting (trivial) and end with genome assembly (not so trivial). To solve a problem, you download a sample data set, write your code and debug it. Once you think you are ready, you have a time limit to solve and provide an answer for the actual problem dataset. If you mess up, there is a timed new dataset to download.
