Baby Mammal Hatches From Egg | I Fucking Love Science

Baby Mammal Hatches From Egg | I Fucking Love Science | Biodiversity protection | Scoop.it
All mammals have a number of traits in common: they’re all warm blooded, have hair, have seven cervical vertebrae, breathe air, and feed their young milk. Nearly all mammals also give birth to live young, but monotremes are an exception. This order, which contains platypuses and echidnas, are also somewhat peculiar in that they don’t use nipples to give their young milk, they just secrete it out. Monotremes are endemic to Australia and New Guinea.

Invaders Drove Lizards to Evolve Stickier Feet in Just 10 Years | IFLScience

Invaders Drove Lizards to Evolve Stickier Feet in Just 10 Years | IFLScience | Biodiversity protection | Scoop.it
A recent lizard invasion shows how quickly evolutionary change can occur when the competition for food and space gets fierce. On a group of small islands in Florida, native green lizards were pushed to higher tree perches after brown lizard invaders forced their way in. As a result, their little green feet became bigger and stickier -- all the better to grip those higher branches with. This study, published in Science this week, provides a rare glimpse of real-time evolution.

Fish Are Smarter Than You Think | IFLScience

Fish Are Smarter Than You Think | IFLScience | Biodiversity protection | Scoop.it
Despite traveling in schools, fish usually are regarded as unintelligent creatures (Don’t you groan at me; that was gold.) However, a new study by Culum Brown of Macquarie University in Sydney, suggests that some fish have higher cognitive function than previously believed. If fish sentience is higher than we thought, there are implications in animal husbandry for fish used in the laboratory and would likely affect the fishing industry as well. Brown analyzed the current body of research surrounding fish cognition and sensory perception.
