-▶  A PHENOMENON CALLED 'SELECTIVE HARVESTING.A phenomenon called “selective harvesting” is often observed by conservationists who study trophy hunting. Trophy hunters value the biggest, strongest, large-horned animals which leaves a resulting population skewed toward smaller, weaker males and females. A domino effect ensues creating an adverse demographic change in the strength of the gene pool in the population ...Such selective harvesting can destabilize social structures and the dominance hierarchy and may cause loss of social knowledge, sexually selected infanticide, habitat changes among reproductive females, and changes in offspring sex ratio. A common feature of many of the reported mechanisms is that they ultimately depress recruitment and in some extreme cases even cause total reproductive collapse. ..Conservation Biology http://onlinelibrary.wiley.comhttp://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1523-1739.2006.00591.x/abstract

TROPHY HUNTING IS BACK IN ZAMBIA

WHEN KILLING WILDLIFE BECOMES AN ECONOMIC BOON

Zambia’s 2013 ban on hunting has been lifted, its Minister of Tourism and Arts, Jean Kapata, has announced. This means hunting wildlife, with the exception of big cats, is now legal across the 19 hunting blocks. Hunting elephants, though, will be allowed. This news comes at the same time as new research has revealed that an estimated 100,000 elephants in Africa were killed for their ivory between 2010 and 2012 and elephant population numbers are declining by two per cent to three per cent a year. This effectively means that more of the animals are being killed than are being born. http://www.wildlifeextra.com

For example, removing just one large 61 centimetre long red snapper from the population is the equivalent of removing over 200 smaller 41 centimetre long red snappers," Shiffman adds. Factor in the slow development time of many large fishes, and a small number of catches can turn into a very big problem. http://www.earthtouchnews.com/conservation/human-impact/small-changes-to-trophy-fishing-could-make-a-big-difference-for-threatened-species

Following in the footsteps of the reviled Melissa Bachman, she claims that her efforts to bag the Big 5 — elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, and Cape buffalo — are in fact “conservation.” With two online petitions currently being waged to either stop her activities or prevent her from promoting them through social media, it is apparent that many others see the situation differently. http://inhabitat.com/texas-cheerleader-claims-hunting-the-big-5-in-africa-is-conservation/

-▶ WORLD MARCHES TO END THE SHOOTING OF TAME LIONS.

No wonder Canned Hunting is known as South Africa’s Dirty Little Secret. Lionesses are forced into an abnormal number of pregnancies to produce cubs. Then the cubs are raised, often by naïve overseas volunteers, in farms where tourists can come and have their photos taken with the animals, thinking that they are doing their bit for conservation.

“Finally, when the cubs are too old to pet, they are taken off to an enclosed location where they wait for their turn to be shot by some hero. And of course, the hero will want the head as a trophy, so the lion gets shot in the body, probably dying a slow and painful death.”

The Independent, March 19, 2014

-▶ TIME TO END 'CANNED HUNTING' Canned hunts are nothing more than pre-packaged slaughters. Lions are confined to fenced areas so that they can easily be cornered, with no chance of escape. Most of them will have been bred in captivity and then taken from their mothers to be hand-reared by the cub-petting industry. When they get too big, they may be drugged before they are released into a "hunting" enclosure.

This is not hunting. There ought to be a law against this. Shame on whoever thought up and runs this sick occupation. Shame on the pathetic individuals who condone this and those who actually call themselves 'hunters'. It's a rather sick joke! Animals have feelings too you know. Early on a Sunday morning last summer, the villagers of Epulu awoke to the sounds of shots and screaming. In the eastern reaches of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, that can often mean another round of violence and ethnic murder is under way. In this case, however, something even more horrific was afoot.

pdjmoo's insight:

Our monetized 21st Society is driving humanity into distraction and lust for profits at any cost.  There can only be one result with this disconnection from and pillage of that which supports all life - our natural world.   Extinction.  We seem to have lost our soul's connection to the sacredness of all life and we will end up cannabilizing each other in many ways -- for one thing -- money.

 June 17, 2012 - CNN REPORT

- ▶ WILL ELEPHANTS STILL ROAM EARTH IN 20 YEARS?   -- At the start of the 1980s there were more than a million elephants in Africa. During that decade, 600,000 were destroyed for ivory products. Today perhaps no more than 400,000 remain across the continent, according to Samuel Wasser of the University of Washington, who is widely recognized as an authority on the subject. It is a tragedy beyond reckoning and humanity needs to pay attention to the plight of the elephants before it is too late.

The conservationist accuses China of fuelling poaching, as tusks are smuggled out in diplomatic bags

December 15, 2012 - The Guardian Jane Goodall, one of the world's greatest conservationists, has made an impassioned plea for a worldwide ban on the sale of ivory to prevent the extinction of the African elephant.

Her call follows the seizure in Malaysia last week of 24 tonnes of illegal ivory and a report by conservationists warning that the illegal ivory trade now threatens governments as rebel groups use the sale of tusks to fund their wars.

"A massive tragedy is unfolding in some parts of Africa. This is desperately serious, unprecedented," she said. "We believe that Tanzania has lost half its elephants in the last three years. Ugandan military planes have been seen over the Democratic Republic of the Congo shooting elephants from the air. Armed militia are now shooting the elephants."... http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2012/dec/16/jane-goodall-ivory-poaching-elephant

- ▶ POACHERS KILL AN ELEPHANT MATRIARCH AND HER FAMILY IN KENYA, PROMPTING A CALL FOR HELP

November 11, 2012 - New York Times

On October 27, Nick Brandt, a photographer and conservationist, photographed Qumquat, one of the best known matriarchs in the elephant population around Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, walking with two daughters, their young and other kin.

One day later, the old female and nearly all of the other elephants in this group were found slaughtered. Their faces had been hacked off by the poachers to be sure they gleaned every ounce of ivory from the tusks. (Click here for photographs of the result – not for the squeamish.)... http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/11/africas-ivory-driven-elephant-slaughter-continues-a-family-falls/?partner=rss&emc=rss

▶ CULLING ELEPHANTS LEAVES AN IMPACT ON THEIR SOCIAL STRUCTURE DECADES LATER.  Scientists are finding that past African elephant culling operations, despite having ended decades ago, have greatly impacted surviving elephant populations and dramatically disrupted their social behavior. Researchers from the University of Sussex studied and compared the social behavior of two elephant herds: one that was severely affected by 1970 and 1980 culling operations and a herd that was relatively unaffected. In their results, published in the journal Frontiers in Zoology, researchers Prof. Karen McComb and Dr. Graeme Shannon found that the elephant herds that had experienced culling operations exhibited signs of post traumatic stress disorder. http://news.mongabay.com/2014/0530-mark-elephants-killing.html

Poverty, as well as Greed killing Africa's Elephants - 10,000 Massacred in Gabon alone. | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Dec. 26, 2012 - New York Times

Gabon’s government has made efforts to combat poaching, but as the price of ivory soars its elephants are being slaughtered.

The consequences of the soaring price of ivory are affecting longtime wildlife champion Gabon, where 10,000 elephants have been slaughtered over the past several years by criminals and poor hunters. "It is a story of temptation -- and exploitation -- and it shows that the problem is not just about demand, but about supply as well. Poverty, as well as greed, is killing Africa's elephants," writes Jeffrey Gettleman. The New York Times

This year alone (2012), we anticipate that 30,000 African elephants will be killed for their ivory. It is estimated that 448 black rhinos were poached in 2012 in South Africa to meet the demand for their horns in Southeast Asia and China. Today, only 3,200 tigers remain in the wild because so many have been killed for their parts. More than 25 million individual sharks will be killed this year for their fins, including many from endangered species.,, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-cristian-samper/the-connection-between-sp_b_2220725.html

pdjmoo's insight:

Slaughtering our elephant and rhinos for two small pieces of ivory, destroying their matriarch families for the sake of profit MUST END. Then  we are decimating shark populations just for their fins and tigers for their mythical healing parts, deforestation killing off all life within them for logging and palm oil...WHERE DOES IT STOP?

There is no lack of reasons to join efforts to stop wildlife trafficking. Together, we need to protect the source, break the chain and stop demand.

RHINO KILLINGS

EWN’s Matshidiso Madia spends sometime at Haartzhoogte lodge where 11 rhino were poached in the space of 6 weeks...

In South Africa anti-poaching groups, breeders and government are in a losing global battle against rhino poachers – the number of rhinoceros’ killed by poachers has escalated from 13 in 2007, to 528 in the first eleven months of 2012.

For many rhino farmers like Spamer and Haartzhoogte owner Braam Van Greuning’s family, this attack signals an ending - an end to the relationship they had with all 29 rhino, an end to watching the calves fill up the reserve’s watering hole and wandering into the camp sites. It also signals the end to a much needed breeding programme that helped increase the numbers of a dying species....

Until someone comes up with a viable plan of action, South Africa and the rest of the continent will remain on a slippery slope towards a world with only the big four to show off.

Confronting climate change and poverty, a new crop of city farmers comes of age in Africa

Some 15 million Africans abandon the countryside every year in pursuit of better lives in the city. Climate change and further desertification will only exacerbate that trend. How will these ballooning urban populations survive? The best strategy, they're finding, is to begin sowing seeds right where they are.
