THE 'GREENING' OF THE COLORADO RIVER DELTA : Last May’s historic pulse flow in the Colorado River helped revive vegetation along a huge swath of the river’s edge, triggering new plant growth and raising the water table in the delta. After comparing satellite images taken August 2013 with new images from this year, scientists calculated a 23 percent increase in the greenness of riparian zone vegetation.

The engineered spring flood was the result of a U.S.-Mexico agreement called Minute 319. Starting March 23, 2014, and ending May 18, approximately 105,392 acre-feet (130 million cubic meters) of water was released into the dry river bed below Morelos Dam, which straddles the U.S.-Mexico border just west of Yuma.

“The pulse flow worked,” said Karl W. Flessa, co-chief scientist for the Minute 319 Science Team. “A small amount of water can have a big effect on the delta’s ecosystem. The groundwater was recharged, vegetation got greener than previous years and the water helped germinate new native vegetation,” said Flessa, a University of Arizona professor of geosciences. “As a bonus, the river reached the sea.”

In addition, people living along the river benefited, he said.

                                               DAMS vs RIVERS

ENN, Environmental News Network, August 27, 2014

International Rivers has launched 'The State of the World's Rivers', an interactive online database that illustrates the role that dams have played in impoverishing the health of the world's river basins.

The database shows how river fragmentation due to decades of dam-building is highly correlated with poor water quality and low biodiversity. Many of the world's great river basins have been dammed to the point of serious decline, including the Mississippi, Yangtze, Paraná and Danube. "The evidence we've compiled of planetary-scale impacts from river change is strong enough to warrant a major international focus on understanding the thresholds for 'river change' in the world's major basins, and for the planet as a whole system", said Jason Rainey, Executive Director of International Rivers. http://www.enn.com/wildlife/article/47761

Marian Locksley's curator insight, October 14, 2013 3:37 AM

Rivers are also often the endpoint for much of our industrial and urban pollution and runoff. When it rains, chemical fertilizer and animal waste peppering residential areas and agricultural lands is swept into local streams, rivers, and other bodies of water. The result: polluted drinking water sources and the decline of aquatic species, in addition to coastal dead zones caused by fertilizer and sewage overload.

Arun Shrivastava's curator insight, October 18, 2013 9:40 AM

ACCESS TO WATER IS NOT A HUMAN RIGHT

If you think water is essential to life, think again. European and American multinational corporations have said that "ACCESS TO WATER IS NOT A HUMAN RIGHT."

Think about it and do some serious reading on this issue. Bottled water has proven to be nothing more than bottled tap water.

An excellent collection of research work here.

http://www.oaklandinstitute.org/video-lower-omo-local-tribes-under-threat Ethiopia has been the focus of aggressive foreign agricultural investment, leasing out nearly 3.6 million hectares of land for commercial farm ventures from 2008-2010. This investment has corresponded with widespread human rights violations. Most egregiously, the Ethiopian government's villagization program will displace 1.5 million people by 2013--with the five administrative regions that have the largest share of foreign investment the hardest hit. The forced relocation of hundreds of thousands of indigenous people from their lands to make room for foreign investors has destroyed livelihoods and rendered small-scale farmers and pastoralist communities fearful of their own survival, as rapes and killings involving security forces have been reported in Lower Omo and Gambella regions,,, http://www.oaklandinstitute.org/video-lower-omo-local-tribes-under-threat

Yellowstone Wolves Need Help From Beavers

A century ago, the wolves of Yellowstone National Park were still killed as varmints—and by the 1940s, they had almost vanished completely. Today, 18 years after their return, the predators are often hailed as saviors for restoring the ecological balance of one of America's wildest landscapes. But a new study says that Yellowstone's wolves probably can't turn back the ecological clock completely—at least not without help from a less glamorous animal: the beaver....  http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2013/02/yellowstone-wolves-need-help-fro.html?ref=em

PROTECTING THE AFRICAN LION FROM TROPHY HUNTERS
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/protecting-african-lion-trophy-hunters/

A PHENOMENON CALLED 'SELECTIVE HARVESTING.A phenomenon called “selective harvesting” is often observed by conservationists who study trophy hunting. Trophy hunters value the biggest, strongest, large-horned animals which leaves a resulting population skewed toward smaller, weaker males and females. A domino effect ensues creating an adverse demographic change in the strength of the gene pool in the population ...Such selective harvesting can destabilize social structures and the dominance hierarchy and may cause loss of social knowledge, sexually selected infanticide, habitat changes among reproductive females, and changes in offspring sex ratio. A common feature of many of the reported mechanisms is that they ultimately depress recruitment and in some extreme cases even cause total reproductive collapse. ..Conservation Biology http://onlinelibrary.wiley.comhttp://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1523-1739.2006.00591.x/abstract

November 20, 2012 - Mongabay

There is a place in the world where wolves live almost entirely off mountain rodents, lions dwell in forests, and freshwater rolls downstream to 12 million people, but the place—Ethiopia's Bale Mountains National Park—remains imperiled by a lack of legal boundaries and encroachment by a growing human population.

"Much of the land in Africa above 3,000 meters has been altered or degraded to the point where it isn’t able to perform most of the ecosystem functions that it is designed to do.

“ “This is obviously not about sport or fair-chase. Wildlife killing contests are conducted for profit, entertainment, prizes and, simply, for the ‘fun’ of killing. -▶  BETWEEN 2004 AND 2011 U.S. WILDLIFE SERVICE KILLED OVER 26 MILLION ANIMALS. Every year literally hundreds of thousands of our nation's most majestic animals - including wolves, coyotes, grizzly bears and mountain lions- are poisoned, trapped and gunned down by the US government.  Few taxpayers realize that we help fund an agency called "Wildlife Services', a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that wages a dirty war on America's wildlife. Between 2004 and 2011, Wildlife Services killed over 26 million animals purportedly to “protect” agribusiness or “bolster” hunting opportunities – a contention based on unsupported myths. The agency spends over $100 million each year on wildlife-killing actions... http://www.wildearthguardians.org/site/PageServer?pagename=priorities_wildlife_war_wildlife

Wyoming wolves are being exterminated.  Many Americans, even as they view the extermination of a species as morally anathema, struggle to grasp the tangible effects of the loss of wolves. It turns out that, far from being freeloaders on the top of the food chain, wolves have a powerful effect on the well-being of the ecosystems around them — from the survival of trees and riverbank vegetation to, perhaps surprisingly, the health of the populations of their prey. ... http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/29/opinion/the-world-needs-wolves.html?_r=1&src=me&ref=general

-▶ A MASSACRE OF WOLVES IS TAKING PLACE

For about two years now, a wolf genocide has been occurring in North America. The population of Gray wolves in the Northern Rockies have plummeted; a slaughter of 2700 wolves in six states has occurred as of February 2014. While there has been a war on wolves for centuries, the bloodshed began to resurface when President Obama removed federal protection from gray wolves in Montana, Idaho, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Wyoming and Michigan in April of 2011. Montana and Idaho won the rights to hunt and kill wolves in the most gruesome of ways, as a result of anti-wolf interests... http://positiveactivism.org/2014/04/10/op-ed-a-massacre-of-wolves-is-taking-place/

Back from near-extinction, the gray wolf will soon be removed from the endangered species list. Now, Wyoming has struck a deal with the federal government to allow trophy hunting of the predator in certain parts of the state.

IDAHO SULLIED AGAIN BY WOLF DERBY MANIA. “We killed hundreds of thousands of wolves. Sometimes with cause, sometimes with none. In the end, I think we are going to have to go back and look at the stories we made up when we had no reason to kill and find some way to look the animal in the face again.”—Barry Lopez in “Of Wolves and Men.”

No state in the Lower 48 hates on gray wolves more rabidly than Idaho.

If you think vigilantes in Wyoming and Montana have done reprehensible things — actions ranging from running down exhausted lobos on snowmobiles to openly promoting the poisoning of wolves and threatening pro-wolf conservationists with violence — they don’t come close to matching the odium that’s condoned by law enforcement and elected officials in the Gem State.

The problem is that people are becoming so disconnected from their environment, to which all life on Earth depends. I hope videos like this encourage people to go outside an appreciate the beauty of the raw outdoors and all that it has to offer because once enough people recognize the value in healthy functioning ecosystems societies focus might change from economy boosting exploitation to conservation, respect and appreciation. Of the 31 largest (≥ 15 kg) carnivores (excluding pinnipeds – i.e., seals, sea lions & walruses), 61 % are threatened, 77 % are declining, and the average occupancy of their original ranges is just 47 % (ranging from < 1 to 73 %). The ages-old notion that predators should be feared and eliminated is waning, but perhaps not quickly enough before the predators themselves disappear. The evidence that they provide positive outcomes for human society is mounting and vindicates these species as vilains. THE DEATH (POISONING) OF DINGOES PROVES TO HAVE NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON AUSTRALIAN BIODIVERSITY. “Dingoes should not be poisoned if we want to halt the loss of mammal biodiversity in Australia,” said Dr Mike Letnic, senior author of the report. “We need to develop strategies to maintain the balance of nature by keeping dingoes in the bush, while minimising their impacts on livestock."
This is the first study to show how removing large carnivores can result in simultaneous population outbreaks of herbivores and smaller predators, and that these population outbreaks can, in turn, have negative effects on smaller mammals. http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/dingo-poisoning-685.html

                            FACING THE MASS EXTINCTION  (2010)

Call of Life: Facing the Mass Extinction is the first feature documentary to investigate the growing threat to Earth’s life support systems from this unprecedented loss of biodiversity. Through interviews with leading scientists, psychologists, anthropologists, philosophers, and indigenous and religious leaders, the film explores the causes, the scope, and the potential effects of the mass extinction, but also looks beyond the immediate causes of the crisis to consider how our cultural and economic systems, along with deep-seated psychological and behavioral patterns, have allowed this situation to develop, continue to reinforce it, and even determine our response to it.
Call of Life tells the story of a crisis not only in nature, but also in human nature, a crisis more threatening than anything human beings have ever faced before. http://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/call_of_life_facing_the_mass_extinction_2010/

"The removal of predators like sharks and sea otters, bass and wolves has consequences," said Garrison, "not only for these species, but for all of us."

"The top-down effects of apex consumers in an ecosystem are fundamentally important, but it is a complicated phenomenon," Estes said. "They have diverse and powerful effects on the ways ecosystems work, and the loss of these large animals has widespread implications."

Estes and co-authors cite a wide range of examples in their review, including:

The extirpation of wolves in Yellowstone National Park led to over-browsing of aspen and willows by elk; restoration of wolves allowed the vegetation to recover.Dramatic changes in coastal ecosystems followed the collapse and recovery of sea otter populations. Sea otters maintain coastal kelp forests by controlling populations of kelp-grazing sea urchins. The decimation of sharks in an estuarine ecosystem caused an outbreak of cow-nosed rays and the collapse of shellfish populations.

Despite these and other well-known examples, the extent to which such interactions shape ecosystems was not widely appreciated, scientists say.

"There's been a tendency to see it as idiosyncratic and specific to particular species and ecosystems," Estes said.

CAUSE OF NEW MEXICO NUCLEAR WASTE ACCIDENT REMAINS A MYSTERY. 55-gallon drum of nuclear waste, buried in a salt shaft 2,150 feet under the New Mexico desert, violently erupted late on Feb. 14, 2014 and spewed mounds of radioactive white foam.

The flowing mass, looking like whipped cream but laced with plutonium, went airborne, traveled up a ventilation duct to the surface and delivered low-level radiation doses to 21 workers.

The accident contaminated the nation's only dump for nuclear weapons waste — previously a focus of pride for the Energy Department — and gave the nation's elite ranks of nuclear chemists a mystery they still cannot unravel. http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-nuclear-waste-accident-20140824-story.html#page=1

                       HOW WOLVES CHANGE RIVERS (4:33)

This is an incredible video detailing the positive effects wolves have on the eco system! It first started by changing the behavior of the deer; they stopped going into certain areas they knew the wolves could catch them easily. That enabled trees to grow higher than they ever have! They regenerated forests, stabilized the river banks which grew more vegetation which allowed for more wildlife to thrive. The river changed in response to the wolves; they changed the physical geography by just existing within nature! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysa5OBhXz-Q#t=96

Endangered Species Coalition
END THE INHUMANE TRAPPING OF WOLVES

More than one thousand wolves have been killed by trappers in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Wisconsin, and Minnesota since 2011. Unlike hunting, trapping is loosely regulated. In states that allow trapping, wolves can be left for days on end. Trapping is thoroughly indiscriminate. Endangered and protected species like bald and golden eagles, wolverines, Canada lynx, and countless others are killed annually by trapping. Even household pets are killed by this outdated, cruel practice. In Montana, lethal traps can be set a mere 1,000 feet from a trailhead, a campground, or even a home. http://action.endangered.org/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=17622&killorg=True

STOP WILDLIFE KILLING CONTESTS IN CALIFORNIA.

“What’s at issue, is the wanton waste of wildlife and the awarding of prizes and inducements to kill as many individuals as possible- and the largest,” stated Camilla Fox, founder and executive director of Project Coyote. “This is obviously not about sport or fair-chase. Wildlife killing contests are conducted for profit, entertainment, prizes and, simply, for the ‘fun’ of killing. Such contests perpetuate a culture of violence and send the message to children that life has little value and that an entire species of animals is disposable.”  http://focusingonwildlife.com/news/stop-wildlife-killing-contests-in-california/

I think that this is really sad that countries are willing to kill the wolves other than seeing if there is another way to save the Caribu. In my opinion its more like pointing fingers and saying well they can keep their wolves safe so we don't have too.
Laurel Stelter's curator insight, October 2, 2013 9:01 PM

Yes, sometimes wolves may seem scary. But this is truely sad. I cannot believe who would've ever thought that these wolves should be so wiped out. This is disappointing. These wolves are being killed to protect domestic animals and caribou. First problem; the amount of money to kill these wolves would cost more than the damage done to domestic animals alone. Spend the money on protecting domestic animals. Second problem; us humans are the ones responsible for caribou being endangered. Because of Canada's industrialization, it is simply hurting the caribou. Yes, the wolves are also killing the caribou, but I don't think that the wolve killing goal is reasonable. At the time of the article there were 3500 wolves. They are literally shooting for a goal of 500 remaining wolves. Killing 3000 wolves is a lot. Let's take a look at what we're doing wrong before going on mass killings of animals.

If you think vigilantes in Wyoming and Montana have done reprehensible things — actions ranging from running down exhausted lobos on snowmobiles to openly promoting the poisoning of wolves and threatening pro-wolf conservationists with violence — they don’t come close to matching the odium that’s condoned by law enforcement and elected officials in the Gem State.

pdjmoo's insight:

Wolves mate for life and have a distinct family life.  There is a natural balance to the predator-prey relationship that keeps Nature healthy.  When man interferes with this the entire web of life is impacted.  Killing off our wildlife and environment will be the human demise.  As Nature Goes, So Do We.  Nature's Health Is Our Health.  All species are equal in their own right

"We are effectively undoing the beauty and the variety and the richness of the world which has taken tens of millions of years to reach," Kolbert tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "... The Greater the Biodiversity in the Ecosystem, The Greater Resilience of an ecological community and for adaption.  Everything is Interconnected and interdependent.  Myopic genetic engineering destroys these connections and breaks the link of naturally evolving organisms
“A Thousand Invisible Cords: Connecting Genes to Ecosystems” is a 56-minute eco-documentary that can change how we view the world. Community genetics can be used to help save and restore natural ecosystems particularly in view of Climate Change evolutionary impacts. No longer will we see species as isolated members of ecosystems but as genetically connected members of a rich interacting community. In the words of the 19th century naturalist, writer, and environmental activist John Muir: “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find that it is bound fast by a thousand invisible cords that cannot be broken to everything in the universe.”  http://vimeo.com/40615050

Killing All Wolves: A Product of Alberta’s Big Oil and Gas Boom

Killing All Wolves: A Product of Alberta’s Big Oil and Gas Boom | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

by Ed Struzik: Yale Environment 360

The development of the tar sands and other oil and gas fields in Alberta has carved up the Canadian province's boreal forest, threatening herds of woodland caribou. But rather than protect caribou habitat, officials have taken a controversial step: the large-scale killing of the wolves that prey on the caribou.

Over the past five years, the government of Alberta has spent more than $1 million poisoning wolves with strychnine and shooting them from the air. In all, more than 500 wolves in the Little Smoky River region have been destroyed in a controversial effort to save woodland caribou, whose numbers have plummeted as the oil, gas, and logging industries have increasingly carved up Alberta’s boreal forest in recent decades.... http://e360.yale.edu/feature/alberta_canada_energy_boom_places_wolves_in_the_crosshairs/2459/

OUR TOP PREDATORS ARE CRUCIAL: How wolves increased biodiversity in Yellowstone - VIDEO

This VIDEO mentions something really important. We still have wolf culls like that in Nolo, ID “to protect the elk herd.” The idea is to cull the local wolves down to 20 or 30 individuals, so as to build up the local elk herd. It's called the ecology of fear hypothesis.
Predators do play a role in ecosystems. And they don’t just do it through killing prey species. They also do it by making the prey species fear predation. And that fear has real ecological ramifications.
