Permaculture Is the Silver-Green Bullet for the Middle East

Permaculture Is the Silver-Green Bullet for the Middle East | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Green Prophet, January 16, 2012

▶  PERMACULTURE IS THE SILVER-GREEN BULLET FOR THE MIDDLE EAST “Permaculture made total common sense to me,” insists Nadia Lawton, “it also fitted with my life ethics a a Muslim.” While the first part of Nadia’s statement may not be considered unique, her remark about Islam is. Permaculture is defined as the design and maintenance of agriculturally productive systems that have the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems. It basically looks at growing in a holistic framework which promotes sustainability, the conservation of resources and biodiversity.... http://www.greenprophet.com/2012/01/interview-nadia-lawton-talks-about-permaculture-in-the-middle-east/

People are becoming less and less self-sufficient around the world, these local communities that were previously growing everything themselves and knew how to build their own houses out of natural materials are completely dependent on big foreign powers and import from other countries. All around the world, whether you're in South America, in North America, in Europe, in Asia, people are experiencing weather patterns that are out of the norm.  The planet needs permaculture.

Nadia Lawton is also the founder of the Jordan Valley Permaculture project in Jordan which was completed in 2011. Located in a harsh desert environment, it demonstrates how permaculture principles can work even in the harshest Middle Eastern climate. “We always wanted to have a demonstration site and education centre to help local people… It has become part of my life work to set this project up so people can live in peace with the environment and each other.”

Nadia is optimistic about the future. Over the years, she states she has seen big changes with more people – from locals to royal families- taking permaculture seriously. In fact, Nadia says she is certain that Permaculture “holds all the answers for food, water and sustainable development [problems in the Middle East] and it fits perfectly with the culture.” So when I ask her what is holding the development of permaculture in the region, she replies that it is limited funding. “This means we have to work with what we have and show people what they can do with minimum funding, which is good. But we always want to do more, so we can help more people.”

The Last Wild Wolves - Part 1

The problem is that people are becoming so disconnected from their environment, to which all life on Earth depends. I hope videos like this encourage people to go outside an appreciate the beauty of the raw outdoors and all that it has to offer because once enough people recognize the value in healthy functioning ecosystems societies focus might change from economy boosting exploitation to conservation, respect and appreciation. A happy healthy environment equals happy healthy people!

Fueling Extinction: How Dirty Energy Drives Wildlife to the Brink

WASHINGTON (Jan. 19, 2012) - Oil, gas and coal extraction is threatening at-risk wildlife across the nation, a new report details. Fueling Extinction: How Dirty Energy Drives Wildlife to the Brink, released today by the Endangered Species Coalition, shows how the nation's most imperiled plants, birds, fish and wildlife suffer displacement, loss of habitat and threat of extinction from the development, storage and transportation of fossil fuels. "America's outsized reliance on dirty and dangerous fuels is making it much harder to protect our most vulnerable wildlife," said Brock Evans, president of the Endangered Species Coalition. "We should not sacrifice our irreplaceable natural heritage in order to make the fossil fuels industry even wealthier." YubaNet.com http://ow.ly/8BlcD

AFRICA Women Farmers Say NO to Western Ag techniques, gmo and energy-intensive monocrops | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

January 16, 2012 AWID

West Africa—Escalating anxiety over the appropriation and control of land, seeds, and farming techniques by foreign governments and corporations—manifested in “land-grabbing,” seed monopolization, genetic modification, and the imposition of high-tech, water-, chemical-, and energy-intensive monocrops touted by The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is a Gates Foundation-funded initiative based in Nairobi and spearheaded by Kofi Annan, former secretary general of the U.N.

But a growing movement of local farmers—largely led by women—argue that the surest path to food security is securing food sovereignty. It’s a concept that was put forward in the early 90′s by Via Campesina, an international alliance of peasant, indigenous, and women’s organizations that advocates for communities’ control over how food is produced, and who gets to eat it.....  http://www.awid.org/Library/Women-Farmers-Feed-the-World

While conservation has long been science driven, success will ultimately come down to changing the way people relate to nature.

Guinness World Records declared in 2008 that Indonesia had the world’s fastest deforestation rate. Borneo alone has lost more than 50 percent of its original forest cover; half of that loss occurred in the past 20 years due to logging, mining, fire, development of palm oil plantations and other habitat-destroying human activities.
