UNION OF CONCERNED SCIENTISTS

One of the most frequently mentioned benefits of genetically engineered crops is a reduction in chemical pesticide use on corn and cotton. These chemicals typically kill not only pest insects but also beneficial insects that help control pests or pollinate crops. They may also harm other friendly organisms like birds.

But in reality, corn engineered to kill certain insect pests—AKA Bt corn—has mainly resulted in the replacement of one group of chemical insecticides with another.

Confronting climate change and poverty, a new crop of city farmers comes of age in Africa

Some 15 million Africans abandon the countryside every year in pursuit of better lives in the city. Climate change and further desertification will only exacerbate that trend. How will these ballooning urban populations survive? The best strategy, they're finding, is to begin sowing seeds right where they are.

Global warming: Welcome to the age of mankind (and a polluted planet) | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it
Many scientists now believe that over the last 200 years, mankind’s impact on the Earth has become so powerful that we have ushered in a whole new geological age, which they call the Anthropocene, or Age of Man.

Scientists say the principal agents of this change are the machinery of the industrial age and its chemical toxins. ... http://chimalaya.org/2012/01/25/global-warming-welcome-to-the-age-of-mankind/

AFRICA: At the Nexus of Agrofuels, Land Grabs and Hunger – Part 2 | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

The forests in Africa absorb over 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon annually. With these diverse and natural forests, grasslands and prairie lands disappearing under investment schemes and the development of monoculture plantations for supposed "green" energy alternatives like agrofuels, not much else remains to absorb the shocks of hunger and climate change.

Improving Forestry for Nature, People and the Climate

Improving Forestry for Nature, People and the Climate | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it
As we watch the world debate how best to address climate change, and as carbon emissions continue to soar, at least one climate strategy strikes me as a "no-brainer." We should do everything we can to save the world's forests.

REDD+ alone will not solve the climate change challenge -- we must urgently address carbon pollution from all sources. But REDD+ is a critical piece of the puzzle in addressing this global challenge, and it has the potential to be transformative in benefiting communities, ecosystems, biodiversity and the global climate.

Size, seed dispersal key to survival of Arctic plants facing climate change: study | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

“Genetic variation is crucial for species to adapt to changing climate,” said researcher Inger Greve Alsos, associate professor at the University of Tromsø in Norway.

“If a species with limited seed dispersal perish from an area, it means that this species as a whole will experience an irrevocable loss of genetic diversity.”

“The most practical thing that Cyprus could do would be to show through example and through leadership what it takes to run an economy in a water scarce area,” McGlade said.

One way to do that would be instead of just planning extra desalination plants to try and use the natural capacity of Cyprus in a way that would avoid the huge energy requirements to fuel those plants.

From the tourist center of the tiny island of Cozumel, I could see the rising skyline of an ever-developing shoreline of Cancun.

It's a mass of humanity and mega resorts that are spreading like a virus to its little island neighbor: Cozumel. Cozumel has its own shoreline resort and hotel development on the western side of the island. But on the eastern shore, it is still pristine and beautiful. How long will it last before the hungry developers begin to consume this quiet side of Cozumel?

OVERFISHING, NO FOOD FOR SEALS: Pictures: Baby Seals Rescued After European Storms

OVERFISHING, NO FOOD FOR SEALS: Pictures: Baby Seals Rescued After European Storms | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it
More than a hundred baby seals are recuperating at Dutch and U.K. nurseries after being stranded amid recent storms, experts say.

The incident is an extreme example among a recent increase in pup strandings, experts say. Overfishing has reduced the seals' available prey, and the polluted fish the animals do catch often make them sick.

"In the last two or three years we have seen more and more seals wash up too weak to look after themselves," Lenie 't Hart, director of the Zeehondencrèche seal nursery, told AFP.
