FIERCELY LOVING EARTH IS THE ANSWER. Our Ecological Foundation is Unraveling Before Our Eyes–without which there is no life. | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Earth's ecosystems are collapsing under the burden of human growth, destroying our one shared biosphere that makes life possible. Industrial growth – frantically destroying ecosystems to feed insatiable, ever-growing appetites – is an aberration, a mistake, a disease. If left untreated, this will be the end of the human family, all life, and Earth's very being. Infinite economic growth at the expense of ecosystems is impossible, and seeking endless and inequitable growth in consumption and population can only lead to collapse and massive die-off.

New biodiversity map of Andes shows species in dire need of protection

New biodiversity map of Andes shows species in dire need of protection | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

SCIENCE DAILY: The Andes-Amazon basin of Peru and Bolivia is one of the most biologically rich and rapidly changing areas of the world.

A new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Ecology has used information collected over the last 100 years by explorers and from satellite images which reveals detailed patterns of species and ecosystems that occur only in this region. Worryingly, the study also finds that many of these unique species and ecosystems are lacking vital national level protection.

Written into law in 1916, the act that created the National Park Service, known as the Organic Act, has ever since served as the Magna Carta for our national park system. The language of the Organic Act defines the national park mission in well-known terms: “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner… as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Egypt has been endowed with a unique variety of ecosystems and a corresponding variety of wildlife that ranges from Eurasian species to purely sub-Saharan species. Because of its generally dry hot climate and arid terrain much of the fauna and flora is desert adapted and often hard to find, so the visitor may be excused for thinking that the desert is deserted! This is very far from the case.

OUR TOP PREDATORS ARE CRUCIAL: How wolves increased biodiversity in Yellowstone - VIDEO

This VIDEO mentions something really important. We still have wolf culls like that in Nolo, ID “to protect the elk herd.” The idea is to cull the local wolves down to 20 or 30 individuals, so as to build up the local elk herd. It's called the ecology of fear hypothesis.
Predators do play a role in ecosystems. And they don’t just do it through killing prey species. They also do it by making the prey species fear predation.

And that fear has real ecological ramifications.

In the summer of 2011, two young Maritimers, Justin Cantafio and Ryan Oickle, departed on a journey that would take them across Canada and back in just under four months. The objective was to connect with the individuals on the front line of sustainable food production and distribution, in a country whose agricultural policies are favorable towards the large-scale and unsustainable production of market commodities...

Our hypothesis going in to the trip was that not only is small-scale organic agriculture a biophysically viable alternative to the dominant yet unsustainable form of industrialized conventional agriculture and food distribution so common today, but that it also serves as the foundation for truly happy and healthy people, communities, and ecosystems. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7-JpVCLnZk

FARMERS GO WILD

The words “wild” and “farming” may seem at odds. In the last century, with the development of petroleum-based pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, farms were increasingly modeled on industry. “Fencerow to fencerow,” mono-crop farming emphasized high production and minimized the importance of biodiversity. Farmers ripped out vegetation, cut down forests, shot predators, and filled in wetlands and streams. Today, agriculture is a major cause of the habitat loss that puts endangered species at risk... http://www.yesmagazine.org/issues/the-yes-breakthrough-15/farmers-go-wild

A Collective Small Farmers Lawsuit: GMO (Transgenic) Modified Crops destroying their organic crops | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Consumer resistance to transgenic (GMO) food is high, part of a debate that is coming to life in courtrooms and online.

Last year, according to the Department of Agriculture, about 90 percent of all soybeans, corn, canola and sugar beets raised in the United States were grown from what scientists now call transgenic (genetically modified) seed. Most processed foods (staples like breakfast cereal, granola bars, chicken nuggets and salad dressing) contain one or more transgenic ingredients, according to estimates from the Grocery Manufacturers Association, though the labels don’t reveal that. (Some, like tortilla chips, can contain dozens.)

Common ingredients like corn, vegetable oil, maltodextrin, soy protein, lecithin, monosodium glutamate, cornstarch, yeast extract, sugar and corn syrup are almost always produced from transgenic crops.
