Are Pesticides Pushing Honeybees Past the Tipping Point? | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Of particular concern is a group of pesticides, chemically similar to nicotine, called neonicotinoids (neonics for short), and one in particular called clothianidin. Instead of being sprayed, neonics are used to treat seeds, so that they’re absorbed by the plant’s vascular system, and then end up attacking the central nervous systems of bees that come to collect pollen. Virtually all of today’s genetically engineered Bt corn is treated with neonics.

RSPB warns Foreign Office of threat to wildlife without tenfold increase in spending, writes Robin McKie...

They are more exotic than the gulls, gannets and terns of Britain's home coastlines, but many of the fascinating and charismatic species of birds on the remote shores of UK overseas territories are now close to extinction. In a report to the government, the RSPB warns 33 species of birds, including penguins, parrots and albatrosses, are now critically endangered across the remnants of the empire. And that means we have a duty to fulfil.

Birds' diverse traits survive Amazon fires

Birds' diverse traits survive Amazon fires | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

'Our research suggests that functional diversity may be more resilient than you would predict from looking at changes in species composition, which is good news for the recovery of ecosystem functions. Nevertheless, rainforest fires are still bad news indeed for the birds that depend on the dark understorey found in primary forests,' explains Dr Jos Barlow of Lancaster University, a joint author of the study.

“If we never look at the consequences of our behavior, we can always maintain the illusion of our competence. ." Dietrich Dörner

Via: AL JAZEERA "WITNESS" Expose

Green is an unusual film. It contains no narrative or dialogue and yet helps us understand complex commodity chains. It is both a hard hitting portrayal of the causes and consequences of deforestation in Indonesia, and a film which captures the tranquillity and calm of wild nature.  The film takes viewers on an emotional journey, following Green's final days and revealing the devastating impact of fulfilling unbridled consumerism thru logging, land-clearing and palm oil plantations.

Stunning images of the natural world and its biodiversity are counter-pointed with scenes of their destruction and the resulting loss of all life in the forest. NOTE: This film contains upsetting scenes including cruelty to animals.

Monsanto’s Roundup Ready Crops Tied to Butterfly Decline AND MANY OTHER SPECIES

Monsanto’s Roundup Ready Crops Tied to Butterfly Decline AND MANY OTHER SPECIES | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

When you mess with Mother Nature and the complexities of the ecosystems that are responsible for us all being alive, you need to be prepared for unintended consequences.

The latest oops, in Monsanto’s growing list, is the elimination of large numbers of monarch butterflies from the landscape. Does Roundup kill butterflies?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, roughly five times as much of the weed killer was used on farmland in 2007 as in 1997, a year after the Roundup Ready crops were introduced. Department of Agriculture statistics show that 94 percent of the soybeans and 72 percent of the corn being grown in the United States are herbicide-tolerant.

Are We Running Out of Water? We should be careful about ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul

Are We Running Out of Water? We should be careful about ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul | Biodiversity IS Life – #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Rivers #Forests #Environment | Scoop.it

Early in 2001, the Rio Grande River failed to reach the Gulf of Mexico for the first time.

We should be careful about ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul.’ As we dry up a river or lake to harvest or export its water, the health of fish populations and natural freshwater ecosystems plummet. In virtually all of the large rivers that have begun to go dry, fisheries have been decimated, leading to severe hardship for local people that depend upon that food source for their subsistence and livelihoods
